There were a lot more than 250,000 inhabitants. More like a few million. At the time of Columbus' arrival there were 100 - 110 million inhabitants of the Americas. By the time the first European settlers arrived, there were less than half that and 100 years after Columbus, there were only about 10 million. By comparison, American aboriginal people were far more civilized than their European contemporaries. Europeans were not much more than barbarians crawling out of the Dark Ages.
Cliffy, the numbers you quote reminds me of a United States congressman who claimed that there were 200 million Africans snatched from Africa to be taken as slaves to America and so many died on the journey, that their dumped dead body effectively changed the migration route of sharks.

There were many things that the first white European arrivers to North America took back to Europe:

Potatoes. Tomatoes. Peppers. Tobacco.

That last one cancels all the bad Europeans might have done to North Americans, who claim, but never had the science or knowledge to do to Europe what Europe has done to them.

In many ways, the old traditional system was pretty good for the guys. Great hunting and fishing 24/7, got to attack your enemies when they pissed you off-you were related to most of them, got to steal women too. And we could have several wives. Better than the nonsense some say about how aboriginals had a "matriarchial" system. Women in all traditional societies did all the drudge work, in Africa, Asia, America and Europe, it was all the same. Women were property owned by men in pre-modern times.
Problem is, things like famine occur in traditional societies, like happened in Ireland in the 1840s. Like is happening today in Africa. Modern societies throw scraps of food at them, shrug, and tell them to get with the program.
Without all those precious immigrants, Canada would shrivel up and die! How horrid!
If you had gone all the way to high school you would know better.

I am an immigrant. I would have never expected to or accepted to live in housing I could not provide for myself.

The numbers you quote remind me of US Congressman Donald Payne who claimed that there were 20 to 50 million Africans snatched from Africa to be taken as slaves to America and so many died on the journey, that their dumped dead bodies actually caused the Norwich Packet, of Kingston Jamaica to publish this account...

From the book "The Slave ship; A Human History"

“The many Guineamen [slave ships] lately arrived here have introduced such a number of overgrown sharks. (The constant attendants on the vessels from the coasts) that bathing in the river is become extremely dangerous, even above town. A very large one was taken on Sunday, along side the Hibberts, Capt. Boyd.” Abolitionists would do much to publicize the terror of sharks in the slave trade, but this evidence comes from a slave society, before the rise of the abolitionist movement. More came from Captain Hugh Crow, who made ten slaving voyages and wrote from personal observation that sharks “have been known to follow vessels across the ocean, that they might devour the bodies of the dead when thrown overboard.”

The people who first came to NA and build this great country were the Europeans. They build the trading system and put most of the infrastructure in place like the legal system (which is based on Christian ideology), government system, schools etc etc. Immigrants from other countries did not start coming here until most of the infrastructure was in place. This started happening after WW2.

If SCOTS are Europeans, you're correct.........first time..........congrats.

Little by little we have managed to fukk things up.

However, I don't plan to go live in Africa or a Soviet bloc anytime soon............One gets used to freedom of speech, three sqares a day, the modicum of success which comes from hard work and planning, and etc.

Now, for that valium............

It's not to late to fix things before things really go off the rails.
One thing we have to do is fix our immigration system. We need to be more selective on which countries we immigrate people from.
We need people that will fight for Canada if the time ever comes to do so. We don't people who come here and then run back home with their original passport whenever the going gets tough in Canada..

Fraid not Freddie. You must show me why I am wrong because I accurately told you that pre-modern people die in famines by the thousands and millions. Hard to argue with facts and you present none. A recurring problem here.

More selective, translation: far fewer immigrants for a few decades, 75% less at least.

That's not all you said, and the part that taxslave was most definitely referring to, was the part that you have been shown, time and time again to be completely wrong about.

Hard for me to argue with facts when I just ignore ones I don't like.
FIFY.

First off, modern history starts after the Middle Ages and there was no such thing as a population numbering in the millions on the entire continent, let alone in Canada back then.
Secondly, you presented no facts to support your moronic claim.

http://www.ojibwe.org/home/pdf/more_ojibwe_history_summary.pdf <----- more facts for you to ignore, idiot.

No, the recurring problem here is that you outright ignore anything presented that opposes your own myopic point of view. So why the hell should anyone bother?

To say that past events do not presently exist because they have already happened (and are no longer present) or that future events do not presently exist because they have not yet happened (and thus are not currently present) poses some interestig questions. Can these past and future events, which do not presently exist, influence events that do exist in the present?

I would contest that they cannot, and where we typically assign causality to past or future events there is an actual present mechanism that influences present events. For instance, in the case of past events having an influence on current events, that is only true in the sense that the present effects of a past event influences a present one. Some examples of the present effects of past events are experience, memories, or altered states of events that exist in the present because of something that has happened in the past (but note that it is the consequential altered state that influences present events, not the non-longer existing past event that may have produced those altered states).

In the case of future events, it is the present events that we often describe as "expectation" (or the other present events that actually lead us to even refer to future events in the first place ) that influences present events. A more explicit example may be to contrast the statement that people go to college because of a future degree or increased earnings with the statement that people go to coDamn!
f a degree or increased earnings. Future events only exert their influence in as much as they have present correlates, and therefore it is really these present correlates that influence behavior and events.

What are your takes on this?
