Six Nations water treatment plant in jeopardy...again
by Stephanie Dearing
Writer
"Like I said before, let the god-damned thing blow up see what I(A)NAC does.” District 1 Councillor Dave Hill

Six Nations proposed new water treatment plant is at risk again with cost soaring to $41 million. Six Nations Elected Chief Bill Montour told band council Monday construction costs for the new water treatment plant are higher than estimated. And he said, Six Nations has "gone as far as it can" on the matter. He said council received five tenders for the contract ranging from over $36 million to over $41 million. Aboriginal and Northern Affairs Canada and Six Nations had estimated the cost at $33 million. “Our engineering company came in at $32 million. So we were expecting the pricing to come in around that level, but now it looks like we're around $4.7 or $5 million short," he said. Montour said he had asked Aboriginal Affairs to cover the extra costs and to now consider changes Six Nations proposed earlier on that would help cut costs. "We've also asked for different cost savings we had proposed in the beginning, such as moving the settlement chambers up to the top of the hill. There's a possible saving of $3 million there." Aboriginal Affairs has the tanks located on the flood plain along the Grand River just off Chiefswood Road. The elected leader said other "possible cost savings" included "using the existing water intake." He explained the higher costs, saying “while the cost of crude oil had fallen, other costs had not followed.” "We're having a conference call on Wednesday to go over the options for bringing it back in line," said elected Chief William Montour. The chief told council that moving the settlement tanks on top of the hill would "give us about three days of potable water if there is a flood event."

Turtle Island news.

Oh oh, looks like dumpy will have to fork over more cash for my peeps!

I'm lovin' it.

Thanx dumpy.

You'll take rolled coin right?
Yep. And I will take jewelery, semi precious metals, cars, trucks, boats, ATV's, and so on.

We can move anything.

You should see the pawn shop at Rama on a Saturday morning.

All the white folk lining up to pawn the family car, Grandma's gold ring and silver tea set. While patiently waiting on their cells, for the bank to transfer the kids college fund into their accounts. So they can head back to the casino and give us more of their money!!!

They keep throwing money at left right and center.

I'm lovin' it!

Yeah, white folk like that give us all a bad rep, ;)

Losers, the lot of them.

Never seen the inside of a casino myself. Or a pawn shop either for that matter.

Out of curiousity, how many people will rely on that plant?
Roughly 12,000. But it's being built to replace an antiquated facility and meet projected population growth.

Yeah, white folk like that give us all a bad rep, ;)
Yep, thankfully most of us do not believe that all white folk are brain dead.

Losers, the lot of them.
Uh huh.

Never seen the inside of a casino myself. Or a pawn shop either for that matter.
I haven't been in a casino since I was in Vegas years ago. Pawnshops are neat places.

Dumpy doesn't have a job.
Well that certainly explains the bitterness.

How do you squeeze a nickle out of someone on the dole?
So he's bitching about my peeps getting the contractual dues, while he suckles at the gov't teat. Eating up my tax dollars?

What a hypocrite.

Without seeing the tenders it's hard to really judge but jeepers, RO, UV and ozone combined systems don't even come close to that much.

I don't know what to tell ya, I really haven't followed it. It's a three hour drive from my house. And my waters fine.

Read it and yawn. The PC crowd will fix the situation real soon now. Things are not getting better, they are getting worse and will continue to do so. They will continue to get worse because the current people in charge are crazy. Crazy means you keep doing the same thing over and over and expect a different result. The different result, improvement, will never happen.

State of First Nations reserves is a national disgrace

The report (from Sheila Fraser) notes that despite the billions of dollars that have been spent to upgrade living conditions in aboriginal communities, more than half the drinking water in First Nations reserves poses a health hazard, fewer than half the burgeoning number of aboriginal youth graduate from high school, child and family services are deficient, health care is inadequate and the shortage of housing has more than doubled over the past eight years.

Accurate.

Why do you think the problem exists?

I can say that after living and working with the Innuit for years has made me kind of see why the reservation thing didnt work.Same with the peigans in Brocket.I find they are more family oriented then us kablunaks and not so after the material things as much.
As for their culture, well, most natives have the earth figured out a lot better then us kablunaks, they know about the circle of life and how it coincides with mother nature and how to keep it balanced, only take what you need.I'm still learning about native culture and find it fascinating and full of wisdom.I have participated in many sweetgrass and eagle feather ceremonys and totaly enjoyed every one.We should be learning from them, not telling them they have to move to some town or city and live like us whiteys.

Accurate.

Why do you think the problem exists?

The modern world is rolling over aboriginals in Canada. Just like the modern world rolled over the Irish in the mid 19th century during the famine. And it seems just like the modern world is rolling over east Africa with its famine right now. The short answer is that subsistence people, wherever they are in the world, are being rolled over. Pre-modern cultures will always exist in some numbers in some remote parts of the world, but I can't see how they can thrive in Canada.

What I see in Canada is that the govt is trying to ease the transiiton of subsistence people to the modern world. Much of the work is not going well because good intentions crash and burn against harsh reality. Poor English skills? You're doomed. There's very little linguistic market multiculturalism in Canada. Poor education? You're doomed. The information economy demands educated people, if not, you're marginalised.

Unless Indians figure out a way to produce educated Indians who know English well and have marketable skills, they fail. All that matters are results. Otherwise lives are being wasted, as they are right now.

What does that mean?

Just like the modern world rolled over the Irish in the mid 19th century during the famine.
The world rolled over the Irish?

The short answer is that subsistence people, wherever they are in the world, are being rolled over.
How are First Nations "subsistence people"?

Pre-modern cultures will always exist in some numbers in some remote parts of the world, but I can't see how they can thrive in Canada.
First Nations are pre modern culture?

What is the average "Canadians" culture?

What I see in Canada is that the govt is trying to ease the transiiton of subsistence people to the modern world.
Where do you see that?

Much of the work is not going well because good intentions crash and burn against harsh reality.
What are the good intentions and what is the harsh reality?

Poor English skills? You're doomed.
I agree. But First nations do not have poor English skills in general. So how does that equate to First nations?

Poor education? You're doomed.
Really? I do work for a guy that owns three grocery store buildings, 2000+ acres of land and his own landscaping business. He dropped out of grade 9.

The information economy demands educated people, if not, you're marginalised.
Only if you want to be.

Is that how you see all First Nations?

Unless Indians figure out a way to produce educated Indians who know English well and have marketable skills, they fail.
Do I have to actually list the hundreds and of thousands of First nations people that haven't failed and live fun productive lives?

All that matters are results.
Do you think what you do is getting results?

Otherwise lives are being wasted, as they are right now.
I agree that lives are being wasted. Who do you think is at fault?

And while you're answering that, maybe you can actually answer the original question, please.
