Petey McKay said that:

Here's a response from a reader of the CBC: Not mine, but I wish..................It has to do with Lybia...........our next ground war....trust me.

"""Not sure which I loathe more...Harper, Baird, or MacKay. I'd have to say it's a close race, but I'd choose Baird...just because he's just so into it....being an ass. Every time I have to listen to them, I have this urge to puke. Must be something about their hypocrytical, self-satisfied, gloating, absolutist, overly-assured demeanor that reeks of people who think they are on the side of right, God..whatever. Do they really believe their own venomous drivel? Does the Canadian voter? It seems many do. They seriously worry me. Now, I'm pretty sure the boys have taken lessons from Harper. And Harper? I think he's taken many notes from Americans. Too many. And we are being led down the same path to oblivion''''

Dunno who he is, but he's bang on.

Yeah, I'm not real happy about this either, partly for very personal reasons, quite apart from my deep contempt for Harper, Baird, Mackay, et al. My son left on Sunday aboard HMCS Vancouver, to replace HMCS Charlottetown with the NATO forces off Libya.

All the best to him Dexter. A fair wind, following sea, and a safe return.

Thanks Nuggler, he should be fairly safe, the Mad Colonel has nothing that could credibly threaten a modern naval vessel with an alert crew and they've trained exhaustively and exhaustingly for this. Charlottetown did report being fired upon by shore batteries. It was field artillery though, not naval guns, missed by two miles, and they were lucky to get that close with it. The only real risk is boarding, they have to stop and search any vessel heading for Libyan ports, to enforce the arms embargo, and he's one of the officers in the boarding party. But every such officer has his butt covered by two heavily armed experts in small arms who go everywhere with him, every gun on the Vancouver is manned as well, and there are lookouts scanning the boarded vessel the whole time, it's as safe as they can make it and Charlottetown had no difficulties in six months on station. But always a dad, always a worrier...

We should get out of Libya, it's a Muslim problem, they're not our problem.

I was just thinking along the same lines myself, Durry. I was against this from the beginning and am not at all happy to see our mission expanding. I disagree with the government completely on this matter.

At the same time, I wholeheartedly support our troops. :canada:

I'm not sure what the latest is on our involvement there, is it for 3 more months??

I would be really really annoyed if we start putting boots on the ground.
So I hope we never go this far !!

To be honest, this is how I would feel if I had to sit through one of Michael Ignatieff lectures at whichever University he's at now!

Dexter...I wish your family and in particular your son the best during his deployment. I thank him for his service to Canada and the Canadian people!

I'm not sure of the length of deployment either, Durry ......will have to do some research. I do take pride in the fact that our men and women are force to be proud of and to be reckoned with. They do what they are asked to do with pride and professionalism. That they are admired around the world speaks much about our country to other nations.

Parliament voted to extend the mission by three months, but the Vancouver's deployment is scheduled for six months, my son's not due home until February, so I expect the Conservative majority will just rubber stamp another extension when the time comes, unless some resolution's been achieved. Doesn't seem likely, and even if the immediate situation is resolved, I expect the ship will stay there for humanitarian aid purposes.

First Christmas in his 28 years he won't be able to get home for... <sigh>

Just for interest though, Canadian vessels in these multi-national task forces usually get the communication and control functions, because we're the only people everybody else trusts with their naval codes.

My, you do love the terrible puns, don't you. Can't fault a man for that. :)
