Ya, paramilitary groups aren't fashionable anymore.

I thought the scouts were an integral part of the CAF, composed of inuit / first nations, who work hard to keep our northern borders free and safe and all that. Thought you might support such a function.

Hurts when I'm wrong....................:-(.............ergo, most of the time

What does all the sarcasm mean in this thread? are you saying that a right wing youth program is a bad idea, or are you saying that ALL political youth groups are a bad idea?

Please temporarily put down you shield of implied claims and inuendo, and show us what you stand for.

Bear facts: right wing = fascism/dictatorship. So, many would associate right wing youth groups with a sordid past history of right wing youth groups.

Youth (under 25) should not be indoctrinated into any religious or political ideology because they are just developing their cognitive skills and any indoctrination would be tantamount to brain washing.

Cliffy, you need to remember that extreme leftists have killed just as many people as those on the extreme right. Totalitarians exist at BOTH extremes (which is part of the reason I prefer to be a centrist.. although in many parts of Canada, that means I am branded a right winger because I don't agree with an unbridled leftist agenda).

As to youth oriented political organizations, I think you are wrong: if young people share the values of a party and want to support it in an organized fashion (and learn/become more involved in the political process at the same time) who are we to say they can't? Does your statement mean you feel the voting age should be raised to 25 as well? If thats the case maybe we shouldn't tax those under 25 either since taxation without representation is undemocratic.

I like the idea of the Conservative youth wing being reborn, just as I like the idea of the Young Liberals and the idea of a youth NDP organization: young people are the future of the country and they need to not only be involved but know how the system works.

Unless they are left leaning, in which case you refer to their political involvement as 'brilliant'. (see your response to the Brigitte dePape story).

I think they should have a youth congress, or whatever they want to call it. Youth voters are more likely to have similar times where they are free to meet without conflicting with school schedules. And why would any party ever shy away from attracting new blood? It seems counter-productive to not have a youth wing.

Maybe kids today are far more advanced politically than in my day, I don't know. But when I was young, I followed the political line of my father who expounded on the virtues of liberalism ad nausium. Then I bounced around the political landscape like a tumbleweed depending on the leanings of my peers at the time. I am not saying the youth should not be politically active, I just think they should not be indoctrinated or "guided" but left free to experiment and look into stuff on their own. Their natural curiosity will lead them to the place that best suits them.

I think kids have never had access to the sheer amount of information that they have access to now. With the advent of the internet, I think the only ones who swallow a political agenda without looking into opposing viewpoints, are the ones who would just pick up what was nearest at hand no matter how hard you tried to give them options.

The big advantage of the youth wing of any party is that kids who are interested in politics get to meet the movers and shakers of the party, which can be a useful thing if they want to stay politically active.
