Some members of NATO do. Why does NATO need to carry the water here?

The UN, in a show of their ultimate concern, and at the urging of Britain and France to act with due haste, MAY call a meeting to discuss Libya this week.........

That answer your question?

I'd lol, but I get the feeling that would just not be right.

I think it answers it clearly!

In side a week the people least involved in the Libyan revolution will be the Libyans. It's interesting to see the bankers backing every side as usual.

Although this (like many other predictions of yours) will not come to pass, you must be aching for it.

At the risk of stating the obvious.....the Illustrious and All-Seeing Beaver (blessed be his name) is a CANADIAN republican........nothing to do with the US political party of that name........

Not that I have a problem with beaver of any political stripe......regardless of their affection for the Queen.

Back on subject:

This is why unilateral action or a coalition of the willing is the only option....

And why the United Nations is completely useless.

Russia and China, which traditionally oppose military sanctions, may resist stronger measures so soon after the last vote, diplomats and experts said.
Russia, China, Britain, France and the United States are permanent members of the Security Council who can veto any resolution.
Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov last week called the no-fly zones “superfluous” and said international powers should concentrate on the existing sanctions.
China’s foreign ministry also indicated last week that the Beijing government was cool to military action.
India, which is also a member of the Security Council, has also indicated opposition to no-fly zones, though diplomats said it could be swayed if the Libya fighting worsens.
Britain, France push Libyan no fly zone: 'There is a feeling of urgency now'

If the Europeans want to establish a No Fly Zone no one is stopping them. The question that comes next is whether the Europeans are capable of establishing a NFZ over Libyan air space? I don't know.

Here's an interesting analysis by the inimitable Richard Fernandez about Blood, Oil, Water and Concrete:

"According to both the Economist and Wikipedia, Mohammer Khadaffi’s air assets consist mostly of Russian helicopters, with a few Western types thrown in. These are likely to be used as gunships and mobility assets. “The colonel’s ability to move reinforcements rapidly around his vast country has already helped his fightback. … Unlike the well-equipped, albeit poorly-run, air force, the nominally 50,000-strong Libyan army (mostly conscripts) has long been distrusted and kept on short rations. Meanwhile, the colonel and his sons have built a paramilitary force of some 20,000 well-armed and well-drilled tribesmen loyal to their clan and backed by richly paid mercenaries from Chad and Niger.”

They will ultimately be fighting for the control of three things: the oil pipeline infrastructure, the loading ports on the coast and water. The rebels are based largely to the East, with their backs to Egypt, as Montgomery was in 1942-43. Khadaffi is to the West, anchored on the Tunisian border...."

American AWACS aircraft are prowling the airspace near Libya. It seems we Americans just can't seem to stay out of things which aren't our business. A fair representation of conservative American thought can be found in an op/ed piece by Richard Haass of the Council on Foreign Relations in the Wall Street Journal. The conclusion is that America must stay out of Libyan affairs. Richard Haass: The U.S. Should Keep Out of Libya - WSJ.com

In my opinion Haass has it right on this issue. America should stay out of Libya because it is impossible to predict the kind of blowback that would be triggered by another war. America's vital interests are not at stake in Libya.

I agree completely, and it boggles my mind to hear people such as Bob Rae saying that Canada needs to be involved. No, we don't. We need to let the people of Libya forge their own destiny.
