yeah, along that stretch and up the hill, I suppose that will be such a big project, much harder than
all the improvements they have made recently, guess they will have to dynamite the side of the mountain
all the way up that hill, not much else they can do, guess you would know best, since you worked on
that road. I was driving west one day, came around the corner on that very narrow section, only to see
large semi coming toward me, I had to pull over close to edge and wait so he could edge on by me, not
a dangerous situation, but something that shouldn't be happening any more on that highway, so much
traffic goes to and from these days, and people spend a lot of money over there, as everything one does
in ucluelet and especially tofino is more expensive than many other areas.

Improving that piece of road would be a huge undertaking, Talloola. I studied that stretch in some detail just before I retired. The amount of rock to be blasted would be horrendous, not to mention the miles you would have to haul it to "waste" it (you just can't go dumping stuff in the lake anymore) Another huge problem would be keeping the highway open during construction. One day.......................but I doubt if I'll be around to see it.

they've done so much to most of the other areas east of that part, that it now is a real eyesore and
obviously such a downgrade (pardon the pun) from the rest of it, that it is much more noticeable than
ever before, so I would think they must be planning something, at least in the next 5 years.

It would depend on money from the Feds. To do anything at all you'd be looking at $30 million.

by the look of many of those beautiful houses in ucluelet and tofino, those owners could come up with
at least half of that, out of their pockets. lol lol

I find it interesting and especially awesome that over such a broad expanse of land we as Canadians can all relate to camping trips.

it is interesting, hadn't thought about in that way, but yes, our land is broad and we connect on
this subject as though we all live in the same area, kinda neat doncha think?

Camping in a tent is the best out in the woods at a lake or river, doing things the old fashioned way is best,

It is, isn't it? Especially if the fish are biting & supper round the campfire is a plate of lovely fresh fish! I think one of the most awesome things about camping like that is to be able to look up in the darkness and see the whole sky and the brilliance of the stars. Especially when the echoing of sounds of coyottes or foxes singing, or the wolves calling to each other, or elk bugling, under a huge full moon happens. Wow!

Hadn't thought about that before, but it is very awesome. :::goosebumps:::

Northern Ontario,
The OP asks for stories about camping...
Having lived in Northern ontario, camping is pretty much a natural thing to do and like everybody I started in a tent and kept going bigger and better with the aches and pains of getting older.

Ten years ago, I'm in Tottenham, just north of Toronto camped a few weeks ahead of the festival there.
This guy from Toronto originally from south america, has just purchased this huge fifth wheel trailer with the living room in the goose neck
When he bought it, it was already parked and he had no experience with trailers...
When he asked me what vehicle he should buy to haul it (he was driving a station wagon at the time) I told him ....with a straight face...that they had these special receiver hitches that could be bolted to the roof of his vehicle so that he could pull it....
He was swallowing the BS pretty well but I couldn't keep it up for more than five minutes, and finally steered him straight.
The next year he pulled in after me haulling his trailer with a one ton Ford dual wheel, but kept spinning on the wet grass because it wasn't four wheel drive, so we had to unhitch him, and I used my truck to park him...
Haven't seen him since, but I'm willing to bet he has a four wheel drive now:lol:

Don't hold your breath!!!!!!!!!! JUst got home from 4 days camping at Mabel Lake (between Lumby and Revelstoke) Beautiful lake, but not too many fish. Big Gov't Campsite and generally full. It's a 40 mile drive from Vernon.

When we were young we thought we were wise to go camping. Bought a tent. Loaded up the station wagon an went North.

Landed on a campsite. Set up the tent. Then came the biggest downpour since Noah.

Having been smokers the time, unsurprisingly, our tent had smoke holes at the bottom. Which was wide opening for water to rush in, when the rains began.

Having my wife's finger on the hole, while I bailed out and had the kids safely in the station wagon is one of the greatest/funniest memorey I have about camping.

Cured me of the disease of camping for life.

I lived in tents for 25 years, on and off - My camping has a cottage, a hotel or an RV - Enough of that canvas stuff.

Indeed I do. It's a tad smaller than Mabel Lake which is probably 25 miles long and a mile or more wide.

I hear you, my "camping" is in a 23' fifth wheel with stove, sh*tter, fridge and shower.

We camp in a tiny tent. DH bought an expensive, good quality small tent when he was single, and we just can't bring ourselves to ditch it! The best place nearby is by a little lake at the end of a looooong, windy logging road. We swim, hike, hunt for chanterelles, and laugh at the dog when he finds bear poop and puffs up to twice his normal size and starts growling at a bear that's long gone!

What means of camping do you prefer?
Well, I like conveniences like plumbing, refrigeration, climate-controlled accommodation, controllable cooking fires... 10,000 years of progress in technology so we don't have to live like the Cro-Magnons and Neanderthals, and you want to go back to it? Just hose me down and lean me up against the garage, I'll be fine...

What means of camping do you prefer? Tent, Camper Van, Fifth Wheel, Pull Trailer, Camper on Pickup? Where do you prefer to camp? River, Lake, Ocean, City Campground, In the Mountains? What do you like to do while camping? What memorable experiences have you had- good or bad?

Camping by my standards means using a tent. Usually by a river or lake so you can fish. My favorite camping memory is skinny dipping on the hottest day of the year.
