How in Hell did Chretien get two majorities because his "relaxed" style was in any way comparable to a government who had yet to be seated?

The voters see a relaxed government style and they feel good about re-electing them where with the Harper Conservatives are like stuffed shirts

I think, in this case, voters saw, first, two Tory parties, then a pseudo Tory party who couldn't make up its mind whether to be Conservative, Reform or Alliance.

Relaxed? In Chretien's mafia? One crook versus another....

I tend to be a little kinder to the Liberals, all that excess on their part took place in the context of a very bitter fight for the survival of the nation, the PQs in Quebec were using provincial coffers to fund the separatist cause too.

What are the Conmen in power now fighting for again, all I'm seeing is a big stone wall where our democracy used to be.
Aren't you confusing democracy with something else/ Democracy means rule by majority. We haven't had a democracy ever, IMO. At the moment, we have a plutarchy and we've had that for quite a while.

The democracy ended long ago, if there ever was one in this country. Our governmental style is more republican than democratic, for all the monarchist trappings it has. We elect a series of dictators, similar to what the Romans used to do, and while we can argue that the election itself is democratic, thats pretty much where it ends: we have little to no recourse until the next election comes. Harper gets a lot of flak for being dictatorial but he's really less so than Trudeau, Mulroney or Chretien; it may well be for no other reason than the minority parliament doesn't allow him to be so, but that doesn't change the truth of the matter. Romantacizing the past actions of other politicians doesn't change that truth either.
We should hope wish it was more republican (rule by law). What we have isn't close to that either.

Methinks you might be feeding us a little bit of a crock there, Lib...........when you take a closer look at "stuffed shirts" you sometimes get the opinion that they are also paying attention to business. Not everyone is an A$$hole like Pierre.

There's truth to this, we probably have one of the weakest parliamentary systems in the western world, individual MPs need more power.

The simple fact is Harper is farther along in the direction of dictator than even Chretien who gave ministers real power and voice, Harper would never tolerate a Paul Martin type who was a real threat to his position. With Harper everything is controlled from the PMO and individual MPs are nothing more than pawns on a chess board.

The very disappointing thing about Harper and the conservatives is they didn't have to take things this way. They got the slim minority they did because people were ready for a change, instead we've gotten even more obstacles to real democratic representation.
