Conservatives put stamp on Texas textbooks
New social studies curriculum stresses religion over evolution

AUSTIN, Texas - A far-right faction of the Texas State Board of Education succeeded Friday in injecting conservative ideals into social studies, history and economics lessons that will be taught to millions of students for the next decade.

Teachers in Texas will be required to cover the Judeo-Christian influences of the nation's Founding Fathers, but not highlight the philosophical rationale for the separation of church and state. Curriculum standards also will describe the U.S. government as a "constitutional republic," rather than "democratic," and students will be required to study the decline in value of the U.S. dollar, including the abandonment of the gold standard.

Northern Ontario,
I can see that a lot of people here have only read one source for that piece of news.....If people would read more than one and do it without preconceived notions or bias...one would realize that some people voted the way they did because they believe rightly or wrongly that the US has taken a turn in schools, that teaches students that the constitution is irrelevant and should be changed and several other basic concepts of government are slowly being eroded by some schools, and since the books picked by Texas are invariably adopted by the rest of the states....some articles in the curriculum considered extreme by some have to be given consideration in order to get the necessary votes to pass the much wanted measures.....
But of course the "progressives" think it's OK to buy votes to pass Obamacare that will cost trillions but not OK to give in to religious organizations in order to select books picked by Texas to save money to the rest of the schools in the US..........Bah!

Whether I agree or not on your views doesn't really matter although I mostly agree with you on most things.....but it is not my goal in life to change people to my way of thinking...but I like to point out the options and let people do their own research.
Think of it this way...since I'm not trying to score any points and win any argument with you...If I were to select any links that illustrate my point of view...I would be doing exactly what another poster we both dislike does;-)
But should you find the information yourself and then agree with me...everything is fine.....and even if you disagree with me in the end I still have your internet respect:p

...

Well, they are doing their part to ensure that the Constitution is irrelevant...as I said, they struck down teaching about the religious freedoms and why Government should not pass laws based on one religion...

That is ignoring a great deal about how the United States came to be...colonists fled religious persecution, then persecuted themselves, and the Founding Fathers realized that this was wrong.

Moderates are speaking out as well, not sure why you feel the need to single out progressives...
Texas Board of Education: Making Their Own History | The Moderate Voice

It's the constant back and forth between extremes that sets up this nonsense. Have you read any of the Texas dailies? There is plenty of opposition to what the SBoE has done, not based on ideology, but on what is best for the students, a fact which seems lost now.

No, I'm not kidding. I saw the MSNBC tag there as well. There is no content attached though, no hyperlink, nothing. They have no books or sites of interest either, though there are clearly tags there for them. I'm not sure why it's there, maybe they had plans to sponsor many different media?

Did you even check out their content? The authors and their bios? It seems pretty hollow of you to rail on about preconceived notions and biases, and then casually dismiss something because of a dead tag without even looking around first...

Also, clearly, putting tags on the side of a blog does not mean that the organization, in this case MSNBC, is sponsoring The Moderate Voice... that's ridiculous.

Quite so, when extreme, hate filled ideology is applied to schools, children are the inevitable losers.

I remember a few years ago Kansas Board of Education made teaching of Creationism mandatory (somehow they got around the Supreme Court decision). At that time concern was raised that Kansas students may have difficulty getting into biology programs in the universities, if they grow up to be faithful creationists.

In the next election, the religious right bunch was defeated and the offending language was removed. I don't see that happening in Texas. Religious right is very strong in Texas, and they rule Texas with an iron fist.

Yes I read it ....and no I didn't investigate the commentators to see if they were right wing or left wing ..
Commenting on MSNBC advertising was just a hip shot...because there is also advertising for guns...definitely right wing yes?
Hell the OP was an Msnbc Report
I even wrote that I'm not trying to change anyone's mind on the subject...so don't assume that I would vote one way or the other on it....unlike a religious right hater on this forum..I think there are some good points on both sides although I do lean right according to a chart on another thread.

As if Minnesota has anything to brag about with former Gov. Jesse "The Body" Ventura and Senator Stuart Smalley.

Don't forget senator Al Franken. Surely he burns you up more than anybody else? Ventura after all was not a Democrat. But here is a stand up comedian, the one Republicans consider to be a total buffoon. And he defeats a sitting Republican Senator.

Surely you are mad at him more than at anybody else?

In TexASS??

Not in your life! LOL!!

Gopher, sometimes I think that you people would have been better off if South had separated during the Civil War.

Sure, South would have been a Fundamentalist Christian dictatorship today, with appalling record of human rights. But North would have been similar to Canada.

Clowns and entertainers both.
