There is nothing wrong with taking potshots, countryboy. I like to take potshots at conservatives myself.
As to not being in favour of big government, do you think that conservatives don’t favour the big government? Well, then you are wrong. Conservatives favour fully as much government as liberals do, perhaps even more. It is just that they will intrude on peoples’ lives in a different way than liberals would.
To put it succinctly, liberals want to regulate the boardroom, but not the bedroom. Conservatives want to regulate the bedroom, but not the boardroom.
Thus conservatives oppose any regulations on big business, they would like to abolish minimum wage (or now that it is here, they would like to freeze it at the current level forever), they are against welfare for the poor (not government’s business), some of them would like to scrap the public education (they would leave it to the churches) etc. Some of them want to privatize health care.
In this respect, they want government to get out of peoples’ lives. On the other hand, they want to ban or restrict abortion, ban or restrict homosexuality (or gay marriage), want to make divorce tougher, want or restrict the free availability of contraceptives, bring back death penalty etc. Some of them, the religious right ones, want to mandate teaching of Creationism in public schools. And of course banning pornography is their pet project, has been for decades (though they seem to have thrown in the towel since the advent of internet).
I remember Mulroney had introduced a comprehensive bill restricting pornography, in some cases outright banning it, but it died because the Parliamentary session came to an end.
So it is a myth that conservatives are for less government. They want fully as much government as liberals do, only in different areas.
