EXIT Sign

The Big Red Word vs. the Little Green Man

The rest of the world must get the fact that we just don't care what they think. World there are more important things than a "EXIT" to worry about, grow up. :angryfire:

The big red word, the little green man, and the international war over exit signs. - By Julia Turner - Slate Magazine

Ahhh. the manner of exit signs were in the manner of Christ, individual and personal.

Didn't get yours???

I spoke for seven years as was the spell.

I'm sorry, but exit signs are one of the more important parts of a building design. And you would know that in a hurry if you had flames licking at your heels as you tried to find your way out of a 20 storey building filled with smoke. And you are on the 20th floor. Whether they spell out 'exit' or a picture of a little green man, the intent is to get people out as fast as possible. Personally, I'd prefer red over green because it signifies danger. Combine that color with a blaring fire alarm horn or bell and you cannot help but get your ass in gear in a panic situation. Green is bit mellow in my opinion.

I would be more concerned about visibility rather than astetics. And I mean visibility in a smoke filled room. The means of egress have to be clearly defined and marked with appropriate signage to ensure a safe and efficient exit from a burning building. There is a section in part 3 of the building code that deals strictly with exit signage. LED lamps have improved the exit sign by consuming less power, providing better visibility in a smokey environment and by reducing maintenance on the device.

I agree with you, there is nothing better that a red led sign saying exit to show the way out of a room or building. They should be standard and functional, not astetic looking.

My keepers are telling me its time to go.

Nothing terrible, I'll be around and as happened these days, if there is crap in the words, I'll smell it.

You don't need to be fixated on me.

Actually light visibility through smoke varies with density of particulate and the composition of the particulates. The best exit signs would have both blue light and red lights. If we could see infrared, though, that'd be best. :)

Oooops! Another poor soul slips through the cracks of Canada's institutionalized mental health practitioners. Just visit downtown east side Vancouver to see where that crack opens up to. (I'm sure Toronna has their own version.) Perhaps you should take your new camera down there and expose how ineffectual "mental health" actually is, Durka.

I learned today that the Americans are starting to install exit signs at floor level. That makes sense when you consider if a room is filled with smoke the best place to be is on the floor. It would give you a better chance of getting out alive.

Northboy, you're freakin' me out man. Look for the nearest exit sign, follow the arrows to the outside and take 3 deep breaths.

I be thinking that if a place is full of smoke and there's a risk fire is going to touch one's butt, one becomes literate in a hurry and doesn't care if the light is red or green
