There's one or two sources of hilarity in CanCon that refer to Alberta as the "Bible Belt" of Canada.
I just thought I'd post the facts to dispel this myth. According to Stats Can (one of the sources of hilarity puts a lot of stock in stats even though he can't understand most of what they indicate):

I am familiar with these stats and have posted them on other message boards. Thank you for helping dispel this myth.

That is not to say that many Albertans do not buy into a set of myths (I am not referring to religion) as do others from across this Peaceable Kingdom. But, they're a different story...

Yeah. I looked around StatsCan for demographics on spiritual people but couldn't find any. Maybe that's the "other" or the "no religious affiliation" parts. I kind of doubt it, though.

looks like it would be the east coast provinces followed by Quebec , then Ontario and then Alberta.

Yeah. I noticed specifically Ontario (where the *********** resides) and Alberta (where the CanCon Clown thinks the "Bible Belt" is): a full 4th of the people of AB are "no religious affiliation" and Ontario has only about a 16th of the pop. with "no religious affiliation".

...and I wonder in whose (affluent) neighborhood they all reside?

One's "world view" can be tainted by their surroundings, especially if they don't get out much. Even if they are self-considered to be an expert on any given subject.

Assuming a Bible Belt means an area where there's a relatively large number of Biblical literalists and fundamentalists of various sorts, and given that those people would be identified mostly as Protestants in the list of religions provided in the table, you can't conclude anything about what is and is not a Bible Belt area of this country from those statistics. Most literalists and fundamentalists are some kind of Protestant (in the original broad sense of being non-Catholic), but most Protestants are not literalists or fundamentalists. You'd need to break down the Protestant groups in much more detail, both denominationally and geographically, to identify a Bible Belt. And I'd bet heavily that if you did, you'd find a Bible Belt across the southern rural prairies.

Well Dexter, I live in Calgary and from what I have seen of southern Alberta, there is no bible belt. I used to live in the lowermainland of BC, now THERE is a bible belt running from Abotsford out through Sumas/Chilliwack.

Bible belts are usually smaller communities with lawn signs that say "trespassers will be shot", "take my goat..you die", and "we're Pro-life".

I can't speak for BC, but I'll take your word for it. I live in Regina, and there's definitely one from here extending west along the Trans Canada and into south eastern Alberta at least to Medicine Hat, possibly as far as Lethbridge. You just have to listen to the local AM radio stations along that road to know it.

He is all-knowing and obnoxious, as usual, on another thread, but he is still conspicuous with his absence on this one.

AnnaG, congratulations, you shut him up!!!

I always thought a Bible Belt was the one my dad used to beat me with as he said, "God knows this hurts me more than you." I never believed him. And I stopped believing in his god.

I used to think the old fart was a dick, but one day I realized that if it were not for him, I wouldn't be the radical anarchist that I am today. So now I honour him, he wasn't such a bad dick head after all.
Well, that doesn't mean he wasn't a dick, but at least you were able to draw something positive from the experience. We should all be so lucky.
