That link goes to Library and Archives Canada with I guess must be the "official last word" on this incident. One of the links on that site is an official Department of Nations Defence letter - the past paragraph states, "Both DND and RCMP investigation teams were unable to provide evidence which would dispute Mr. Michalak's story."
I found the choice of words to be interesting...it makes me think that the objective of the investigations was to show that he was making it all up. And that seems to be consistent with most of the information I've seen on UFO investigations, at least in the U.S. and Canada. In this case, the case was branded as "unsolved." At least they admitted they couldn't figure what Mr. Michalak had seen or experienced.
If that was the objective of the investigation (that he was making it all up), that was the wrong objective. How can you prove something like that?
When it comes to UFOs we must look at the burden of proof. UFO enthusiasts make an outrageous claim (that earth is being repeatedly visited by intelligent, alien civilizations). So it is up to them to prove their claims, it is not up to the scientists to debunk them.
When I think about the many (thousands?) of UFO sightings and experiences that have been reported over the past 50+ years, I wonder what would motivate people to come forth with these "stories", in light of the ridicule many of them have had to endure. Of course, there have been some deliberate hoaxes, but ALL of them?
The reason for that is simple, countryboy. We are all subject to hallucinations; many times we are unable to interpret what we see, especially at night in the sky. Even educated people are prone to that. That is why you see UFO sightings by pilots, scientists etc.
That doesn’t mean that there is anything to them. An analogous example would be a magician performing magic tricks. We all get fooled by the magician. Even intelligent, educated people get fooled. Does that mean that there is something to the magic? Of course not.
It the same with UFOs. Our eyes, our vision, our brain plays tricks on us, it happens to the best of us.
Again, if there is anything to the UFO business, let the UFO enthusiast prove their claim (by producing body part of a creature not known to biology, or by producing a metal or construction material unknown to modern science etc.)
