I don't know, JLM. When a known conservative starts arguing like a liberal, it is always worth a comment or two.
Most normal people are part Conservative and part Liberal.

I doubt if most normal people worry about these things, JLM. They are occupied with their daily lives. Those who are actively involved in considering the issues, the policies, the politics, many times fall on the liberal or the conservative side.
But in a way you are right, most people are part liberal and part conservative, most people just don’t care. That is why when the economy is going good, the government is reelected, of whatever persuasion. Same as if the economy is doing terribly, the government usually gets defeated, again of whatever persuasion.
Liberal or conservative policies by themselves are not enough to get a government elected; it is the economy that is usually the paramount issue.
Dealing with the OP, the cause of most food shortages is government. Get government out of the way of food production and food shortages will disappear.
There's this thing called war. See the conflict in most African countries for an example of how war causes food shortages.Apart from taking more than their share out ot the trough..............:lol::lol: how is gov't. "causing" food shortages?

So why do CDN farmers need to get operating loans every spring? Will the FCC be giving loans to Ethiopia this spring? How about Romania or Ukrainian? Loans to buy the bayer Invigor ptogram there?
It's not that unusual for businesses with cash flows that are seasonal or intermittent. Or for one that has to invest heavily in inventory before the revenue starts coming in.So why do CDN farmers need to get operating loans every spring?
Wow! I guess that would be true if you're talking about family homes in Crystal City, Manitoba! (But you'd still be talking a pretty BIG tractor)A tractor will set you back the cost of about 5 family homes.
That is true! And also true for many other kinds of businesses. Banks don't like entrepreneurial risk of any sort...it's their nature. Nothing wrong with that actually, because they're among the best-run financial institutions in the world, as we've recently seen in the worldwide recession. If you walked into a bank and said "i want to start a farm from scratch". They'd laugh so hard your proposal will end up posted by the watercooler or make the next years calendar.
The crops are burned or the harvest is conficated, the people are chased away from their homes and they end up in refugee camps. Then the UN and other aid agencies are not allowed, by armies controlled by governments, to get food to the DP's. That is how governments use war to starve people. This is how Stalin killed 30 million and how Mao killed 70 million.Yep, I guess when all the men folk are away fighting and not tending to the crops, thinks could get a little "hungry". not sure just what Gov't.'s role is in that. In a "coups" I could see it.

Canda and the evil US do feed a lot of the world but, if there is an army preventing food from getting where it needs to go, ain't nothin' we can do about it.Okay, Walter, but what is there to stop Canada and Russia from growing crops to help feed the world? Not that these two countries alone can provide all the food necessary however, they do have the land mass and stable governments.

You can add politics and religion to those three.I'd amend that to say "we have the potential for a better world today"- no doubt about it, but things like greed, laziness and drugs are pulling us down.
Yup. it's government's fault that there's no water for crops in East and North Africa. :roll:Dealing with the OP, the cause of most food shortages is government. Get government out of the way of food production and food shortages will disappear.
Because economics is part of it, like I said. It's not all of it. There's also the demographic crisis. Who is going to be growing the food? Fewer and fewer children are staying on the farms to grow crops and raise livestock. Looming water shortages. Soil depletion. Insufficient amount of arable land. Human diets that are inefficient.
There's a whole slew of issues to address.

Really? I Where? I'm in SK and there is no such beasts worth noting. Tell me more. These days most of the farms are owned by corporations, the individual, family farm is on its way out. These days you have to operate, make profit on volume. But that doesn’t mean that farming is on its way out.
Umh- $2 million for a tractor? Sounds a bit steep to me! Maybe a guy would want to buy a good used one.
