 "My hypothesis is that since Hinduism is the oldest religion on record, ". So the hypothesis is wrong - period.

My ancestors' people have been on this continent for some 12,000 years and I guess up until some Christian brought a Bible over here, they did not have a religion.

Your ancestors weren't all about money at the expense of everything else either....

lol Definitely not. I think back then it was more along the lines of furs, hunting and gathering materials, etc. :D But I also think they realized that a tribe should not exceed its ability to be able to gather food in its area by depleting the food sources faster than it can recupe or by overpopulating the area.

You're ancestors say they were here a lot before that, at least forty thousand more years than Twelve. It would be very odd if they did not have religion. Your ancestors built pyramids and studied the stars, in detail with great precision for a very long time. In the old days before the floods it was a very high civilization.

Well, the archaeological evidence doesn't back up 40,000 years. I prefer to stick to the evidence. But, you have the point exactly right. The parameters of being on record for having religion are quite wide.

Quite, Spade. I think churches should confine themselves to having charity bingos.

Perhaps I've had a sheltered life or something. I have never had a bad enough experience with or at a church to get so upset about them. Granted, I'm not a regular church goer any more, but over the years, I've been involved with them from time to time.

The ones I knew were great places for people to gather, worship, and share a sense of "fellowship" with other people. If nothing else, it would qualify as a pretty good social experience. My daughters both grew up as church goers, and it proved to be a good experience for them, especially when it came to music and singing. One of them is in the opera field today, while the other still participates in Arts Festivals in her local area.

So, I don't have any particular strong feelings against churches in general, as they're basically just a group of people with something in common. And, if those people choose to be a part of the church, well...why not?

Besides, the Charter says they can!

Yep, you make a lot of good points, certainly nothing wrong with a lot of the people who attend church. I think sometimes the parsons/clergy tend to play God a bit or try to push their own take on the Bible and then of course there's the ones who rant brimstone and hellfire. Of course the shananigans in the Catholic schools has not done the rest of the churches any favours. My biggest problem with religion is those who try to ram their interpretation down others' throats.

Yes, I agree, JLM. There are extremes out there, but I used to just avoid them. I guess I could have spoken out against them, but what for? They do what they do, and I do what I do. In fact, if I were to build up a dislike for that sort of thing to a strong enough level, I could say the same thing about Forums. For example, you pointed out, "I think sometimes the parsons/clergy tend to play God a bit or try to push their own take on the Bible and then of course there's the ones who rant brimstone and hellfire." And..."My biggest problem with religion is those who try to ram their interpretation down others' throats." We never see any of that in this forum, do we?

Don't get me wrong, I know exactly what you're talking about and I agree with you...bad stuff in churches does exist. My late mother - a rather avid churchgoer - used to detest the "fire & brimstone crowd" with a passion. She also used to insist that her kids make up their own minds about church when we reached the ages of around 10 or 11. My 2 sisters still go to church, but my brother and I...well, we don't get there too regularly. :-|

I guess my point is that going to church is a personal decision. Can't see any point in making a big deal about it, one way or the other. It's like that "truth" thing...it's all in the eye of the beholder. Or maybe I should say, the eyes of the beholders. Everyone sees it a bit differently.

Besides, whether a person goes to church or not is none of my business.

Yeah, I agree, churches are great places to bring the
community together, have bingos, etc., riase money for
worthy causes, but, they should forget about the preaching part.

When did religion start I wander?

The religion started (on earth) when the first man was created. God sent a large number of apostles (innumerable) to every nation; the apostle is usually one of his people: he is sent out of them, and speaks their language, so that they can understand him. This is in the Quran 14: 4وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَا مِن رَّسُولٍ إِلاَّ بِلِسَانِ قَوْمِهِ لِيُبَيِّنَ لَهُمْThe explanation:(We did not send any apostle [before you, Mohammed,] but only [to teach] in the language of his [own] people, in order to explain to them.)The reason for sending the apostle:The apostle is sent to instruct his people, that God is their only God, and Him alone they should worship, and to warn them that there will be the Judgment Day, when the idolaters and those who associate with God will be punished, and those who devote themselves to God alone will prosper in the afterlife. Therefore, they will not say: no apostle came to us; had You sent us an apostle we would have been guided.http://www.quran-ayat.com/quran-ayat.com

Yeah, they're kinda' like a fast food joint - a great place to bring the kids, have fun in the play area, socialize with other parents, etc. but, they should forget about the food part! (i.e., Nuthin's perfect!)
