What's the difference between Canadians' & Americans'

An American will invest a $Dollar and will be happy to receive a 10cent return .
Canadian invests a dime and cries foul, if his return is not over a Dollar.

Canadians and Americans are very different people for the following reasons: (note: these are all just personal experiences and generalizations)

First of all, I am from Canada so when I say "we" I am referring to Canadians.

  • We talk differently. I have quite a few American friends who will have no idea what I am talking about sometimes simply because of our different pronunciation of words, such as semi (Americans would say sem-I whereas Canadians would say sem-ee) , multi, bag, etc.
Many people will also say that Canadians say aboot and aboat instead of about. This is only true if you're a Newfie and still not all Newfies pronounce it like that. Most stereotypes referring to Canadians speaking funny originate from how Newfies speak. And, most Canadians will make just as much fun of Newfies as the rest of the world does.
  • Canadians are more polite. Many Americans say that although Canadians are more polite, Americans are more friendly... Canadians are equally as friendly but we are not as out there as a typical American.
In my experiences I am usually taken-back when I first meet an American because I find them to be very blunt (which can be percieved as rude) and that they lack general manners (saying please, thank you, etc.).
That is why there are Americans who pretend to be Canadians when they travel to other places because people are nicer to Canadians because they are generally perceived as more kind.
  • Canadians are more educated on Canadian and American history. We know how our country was born and all of the little details leading up to where we are now. Many Americans seriously believe that all Canadians live in Igloos and ride polar bears. If you're an American or from any other country and this is what you believe I am glad to tell you that we all live in houses with electricity, we drive cars, and we have the option go to grocery store to get food. We do not have to hunt for our meals.
Because we have a good education on Canadian history, most Canadians who pay attention in social class know how our two cultures are different. Canadians are typically more open minded when it comes to people and the world whereas because of American media they are more narrow-minded.
Other similarities and differences are:
- Americans are more relaxed whereas Canadians are more uptight.
- Both countries like hockey (Canadians need to stop being so protective over this. We do not own it.)
- We celebrate different holidays.
- We have different food and candy.
- Canadians have stronger beer; Americans have stronger cigarettes.
- Americans have WAY higher obesity, violence, and mortality rates than Canadians.

I for one can tell an American from a Canadian by all the little differences. Hope this helps.

123456789011- I've travelled quite extensively in the western U.S.over the past 20 years and would describe them more favourably than you describe- especially when it comes to friendliness & have almost always found them to be nothing short of obliging. I've heard it said that quite often what you see in another person is the mirror imagine of yourself.

...one more...some Canadians think they're better and smarter than all Americans, which would make some people think Canadians are arrogant. Of course, that would all depend on which Canadians (or Americans) you might happen to meet or know. And that is an opinion from another Canadian - me.

Canadians in general are not arrogant, countryboy; it is the Americans who are arrogant, especially when they go abroad. You probably have heard the stereotype of ‘The Ugly American’. I remember the British sitcom. ‘Fawlty Towers’ did one episode on the subject of The Ugly American (where an American comes to stay at Fawlty Towers and starts throwing his weight about).

But you are right, many Canadians feel that they are better (or at least more progressive, more tolerant) than Americans.

Actually the most obnoxious foreigners I ever run into are Canadians when they come to the US. Not all mind you but I've seen them on a number of occassions.

Like years ago down in Florida on Spring Break. A Winnebago filled with Canadians holding a Canadian flag across the side and hanging out the vehicle...

"CANADA! WOOOOOO! CANADA #1!"

Or last year in Las Vegas at Ceasars Palace the group of Canadian men that stated they owned every bar they went to and basically being jerks...until they were all tossed by the bouncers to the cheers of all the patrons.

Canada has it's share of ugly too.

Hey sensfan, that's not a bad comparison at all! However, it would make for "limited discussion" on this thread, no?

No, not a bad comparison at all. However, there is one significant difference. Canada and USA share a huge border, while Australia and New Zealand are separated by some 1500 miles.

So while there is plenty of influence of USA on Canada, there probably won’t be much of Australian influence over New Zealand.

It really doesn't. It just shows ignorance and how arrogant you are while claiming to not be arrogant. The post just shows that you are one of those Canadians with a chip on your shoulder against Americans.

Many Americans seriously believe that all Canadians live in Igloos and ride polar bears.

Yeah...that is what we seriously believe.

That's more of a sterotype and like you, many are only to willing to grasp on to it if it can make an American look bad.

Sorry but in my travels in the USA I have never seen it as bad as some make it out to be,my Dad's now an American and my brother will be soon. Most of my friends moved there and ive spent many trips down there with no problems.
I'm sure they have their share of arrogant people but given their size it's only natural that they get more exposure via news media and tv.
So the stereotype is seen by lots as being gospel. and when you pidgeonhole a whole country like that it shows ignorance more then knowledge.

Quite so Kakato.

There is ignorance and arrogance in every country and every country has it's share of idiots.

It is people who are arrogant and if "statistics" were available I'd bet my pension cheque it would show fairly close to an even distributioin of each.

Well there you go...I always get caught by my lack of knowledge of geography, not to mention a variety of other subjects. And I here I thought the Kiwis could just drive over the Oz anytime they wished. Stupid, eh?

I am searching for an appropriate frame for the printed version of the above post (where SirJP was referencing one of my posts). It shall be placed on my "honour wall."
