From the Nobel Committee's website...
Quote:
"Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future. His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population. (Emphasis mine)

"For 108 years, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has sought to stimulate precisely that international policy and those attitudes for which Obama is now the world's leading spokesman. The Committee endorses Obama's appeal that "Now is the time for all of us to take our share of responsibility for a global response to global challenges.""
Some people may think the Peace Prize is prestigious, but I think they are naive. The award is a joke and the committee turned it into a joke.
Take a look at what the previous winner (Martti Ahtisaari) accomplished:

Martti Ahtisaari - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Someone let me know when Obama has matched that.
Or these:

Mother Teresa - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wangari Maathai - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Shirin Ebadi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kim Dae-jung - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hitler, too, had the world's attention and gave people hope for the future. It seems the committee's standards are slipping.

''Hitler, too, had the world's attention and gave people hope for the future.''

Anybody who read Mein Kampf would have known that the so called hope was an artifice much like Republican promises. After all, some of his pals were of that party.

In Saturday Night Live's skit spoofing Obama's Nobel win, Obama, played by Fred Armisen, compared himself to other winners: "Jimmy Carter won it for decades of trying to find solutions to international conflicts. Al Gore won it for his years of educating the US about climate change. And us? Well, I won it for not being George Bush."

He added: "This award was as a complete surprise, as I have only not been George W. Bush for nine months."

Obama said the Nobel committee didn't call to wake him with the news, but he wished they had, so he could say to Hillary Clinton, "Hey, remember that 3 a.m. call you were so worried about? It happened. Nobel Peace Prize."

Obama went on to announce he had also just won the $70 million jackpot in the Powerball lottery, and "it was the first lottery ticket I ever bought."

"From our standpoint, you know, we think that this gives us a sense of momentum ... when the United States has accolades tossed its way, rather than shoes." --State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley

"In a surprise decision, President Obama won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize Friday. In other premature awards this week: high school football player Billy Reynolds has been named this year's Heisman Trophy winner; fifth grader Amber Collins has been named Miss America; and nine-year-old Dylan Holt has been named People's 'Sexiest Man Alive.'" --Seth Meyers

So, what I've gathered from this thread is that Obama didn't win for any specific action that he has taken but rather the hope he has given people. This "hope", it would appear, stems from the things he has said (as opposed to the things he has done). Shouldn't the NPP be given to his speech writer? Maybe the guy that operates his teleprompter should have got a nomination as we all know how things go for shyte when he takes the day off.

What I find truly amazing is that, apparently anyways, there are sufficient numbers of people who get all warm and fuzzy when listening to a politician speak. I find it absolutely stunning that in 2009, people still put stock in political rhetoric.

Subject: this is simply classic!

This just announced: Motivated by the inspired selection of Barack Obama as the Nobel Peace Prize winner based on his message of hope and what he might do, the NY Athletic Club has announced that Barrack Obama has won the 2009 Heisman Trophy narrowly beating out Tim Tebow (Florida) and Colt McCoy (Texas).
President Obama was awarded the Heisman based on the assumption of what he would have done playing wide receiver for Harvard given his natural athletic abilities to dodge questions and avoid tacklers and his sticky fingers from his work as a community activist.

The NYAC said there was no reason to wait any further in the season to announce the award since actual deeds could not overcome fictional accomplishments.

FLASH--- It has also been announced that President Obama has won the Emmy for best actor in a continuing series for his many inspirational appearances on network television.

Flash Flash--- Not wishing to be left out of the award bestowing, the Pulitzer Prize has also been awarded to President Obama for best fiction for his yet to be written new novel on his successful presidential years based on his past accomplishments as an author.

Flash, Flash, Flash--- The Motion Picture Academy has now announced the Best Actor Oscar will be awarded to President Barrack Obama for his realistic portrayal of himself in the yet to be announced autobiographical movie

"Barrack Obama---A Man of Vision and Hope". The Academy explained "How could anyone possibly bring more acting credibility to this role as an inspiring US President than the man himself. "

Indeed. He would have wanted to be the best football player so he deserves the Heisman.

I agree with the Emmy folks.

There is no doubt that Obama will eventually publish another book that may be of Pulitzer quality so I do not see any reason for them to not give him the Pulitzer Prize as motivation.

Indeed if he decides to act one day he would win an Oscar so it is imperative for the Academy to give him one now.

In so many words she said...

"I am here because I'm a babe... I don't know the answer...but I think the world needs more maps... especially The Iraq and South Africa...for the children."

That really isn’t any dumber than Joan of Arc claiming that because Russia can be seen from Alaska, that makes her a foreign policy expert.
