Not yet. You still have to invade them first. My understanding is that that is why the pull out of Iraq is speeding up, the UAE have stepped out of line (I've heard through the grape vine that they have WMDs and may have been behind 9/11). Personally I don't buy it. We all know it was the CIA.

The "Vikings" were basically Norse famers, they were the terror of Europe, they made it all the way to Constantinople. But in America, the New World, Canada (what do you call a land before it had a name in its entirely?) they were defeated by poorly armed Indians. We've sure built up these Norse to levels they hardly deserve with one minor hamlet.

Can you imagine how fit those Vikings were after sailing in open boats across the North Atlantic?

Methinks they took a wrong turn at Iceland....

I bet they thought so too!

What were they going to pillage? Arrow heads and fish hooks?

Norse farmers? Are you kidding? The Vikings dominated Europe for a time...especially England.

Do tell of the great battles between the First Nations, or Native Americans in which the later named Indians defeated the Vikings.

I think he's referring to the Beothuks or 'skraelings' who made life difficult for the Vikings when they tried to settle Lanse aux Meadows. Documentation shows that the skraelings originally welcomed the Vikings, traded with them and lived among them for a short while. But something happened to drive the two apart. One train of thought says the Vikings would get drunk and try to rape the Beothuk women. Not surprising...they're Vikings afterall. The skraelings would carry out short bursts of attacks on the small village and eventually caused so much trouble for the newcomers they decided to leave the area. Not much of a battle but effective enough to keep the area clear of the white man for another 500 years. I often wonder if there was any coupling between the two races. I do know there's a group of people in a village nearby with blond hair and blue eyes, very Scandinavian looking. Could they be descendants of this union between Vikings and Beothuks?
The Vikings were well known for their fierce fighting. The Beothuks must have been a formidable foe to defeat them. Then again, the Vikings were very vulnerable at the time, half starved and greatly reduced in numbers from living under extreme conditions along the Labrador coast and Greenland.

Oh where was I? The Americas...yes. Well, lets call ourselves Canada of America.

...sides.... Even those uppity Brits referred to everything on this side of the pond as the Americas....

The BBC uses the term Americas, but my brother in law from Bristol has never heard of the term North America. All he knows is America. An educated person too. He's used the same terminology people in Asia, Africa and Europe use. So why are we so different? The rest of the world place doesn't say the laborious United States, or the US like we do.

It is hard for Canadians to imagine that we are an unimportant country to much of the world. Just lately I read that the leader of the Libs, Iggy, has mysteriously disappeared to most Britons. That smart guy on the telly is gone and few seem to know why. He seems to be lost in navel gazing North America. They said in the article that few Brits are interested in Canadian politics so British media has lost track of him. But we're in Afghanistan! Part of NATO! Gosh!

Australia, is also called an island and a landmass, hmm, are they continents? Some say Oz is a little small to be called a continent, with only 25 million people and one language group. But it certainly doesn't seem like a part of Asia, and because I like the place, I'll call it a continent. Happy?

Well, I think somewhere in early grade school (perhaps grade 2 or 3) education people are taught the continents and oceans. It has nothing to do with what Canadians think of themselves. I don't have to be interested in British politics to know that the UK is part of the continent of Europe.

Nope. I have wondered what things would be like if aboriginals had been the dominant population and not succumbed to paleface nonsense, though. lol

I met a Filipino man and he told me that had Indians in Canada become the majority, it would be another third world country like most of Africa and Asia. Indians are into tradition and don't care about science or progress. I totally agree with him.

Think of the billions Indians get each year from govts and they still live in shacks and poverty. Individuals are bright, but as a group, in their cultures, they don't want to change. I'm not as keen as I used to be about paying for this. One wonders how long they can hang on.

 And yet what has caused so much destruction of the planet we live on? Couldn't be the science and "progress" at all could it?
People hunting, gathering, trading, doing sweats, etc. must have been the cause for all the pollution and crap like that, yup.

Yep, we Injuns juss doan seem to wanna get with it, huh?

And I can tell you, Mr. Monarchy, I sure as hell don't live in a shack. Nor does my father & mother, my sister, or my aunts and uncles.

So much destruction? In beautiful BC? Sure, there is some, but it's not the end of the world.

By the way, isn't the computer and the internet great? Tradition didn't build them, science and progress did. Tradition like g/God and Elvis is dead, 'tis sad some days, but the way of the world.

Far too many Indians live in shacks. About half of the kids in BC that are in child protection are aboriginal kids. With about 5% of the provincial population. You don't hear aboriginal groups taking much about this.

It's too much. Want to talk about Exxon? 1 spill cause communities to collapse, the effects are still showing up on the shores up north, etc. Want to chat with Alberta ranchers and farmers about sour gas?

Sour gas leak evacuates southern Alberta homes

Family allowed to fight sour gas decision

So? You can't impress me with your baubles and beads. Before the internet and computers people actually spoke face to face. They got outside and did things rather than sitting around getting fat and ogling the idiot box or playing games on computers. Not so much now.

I agree that too many live in deplorable conditions. Its been with the technologically advanced and progressive white eyes' help they live in those shacks.
When the Europeans came here and conned natives they did all those nice things like take away the good land and stick the natives where the Europeans didn't want, they made treaties with natives that they didn't keep, etc. Yup, progress is sure wonderful.
Natives had their own culture where no-one starved or anything like that. They had no need for the Europeans' god (money).

Face it, if it wasn't for the Europeans "progress" and technology, aboriginals wouldn't be struggling to get out of the mess they are in and the planet would be a lot healthier.

Relationships between nations is always about power. The Iroquois wiped out the Huron because they wanted exclusive rights to the fur trade. Blame the French and Europeans in part, but Europeans didn't attack the Huron. So Indians had wars, and if they had wars, they likely had famine. Bad news just like everywhere in the world.

If it's not cash money, it's status money, or it's dancing money, anything to show how great you are. Men always do this. But Europeans didn't invent money, they used it to get ahead.

This web page that states only 73% of aboriginals in BC live off reserve. Yet they get all the bad publicity. Which is because they are connected to the govt's media machine. So the aboriginal kids in custody in BC, how many are taken from reserves and from general housing. Would be informative to know.

lmao The Iriquois didn't wipe out the Hurons. Jeeez. That's hilarious. Killing a few of the other guy's bunch always happens for a number of reasons. It's a natural human thing.

Sure stuff like famines happened, I am not talking about stuff that happens naturally.

Money wasn't around in North America till Europeans brought it. Whoever invented it is irrelevant.
