I never said I condone them JLM, I did say that is criminal behaviour. But that is not hypocrisy. Hypocrisy is not a crime, killing six million Jews is. A hypocrite does not pay for his hypocrisy by prison time (unless his behavior is illegal). He pays for hypocrisy by public shame and ridicule, most people cannot stand hypocrites.

"He pays for hypocrisy by public shame and ridicule, most people cannot stand hypocrites."- I JUST LOVE THAT ONE- most people ARE hypocrites- I'm one at times and I'll bet you are too.

Perhaps, JLM. But in the area of politics, most people cannot stand hypocrites. Especially elected politicians often pay the price at the polls. If a plumber or a doctor is a hypocrite (he says that adultery is wrong and he commit adultery), who cares? But with a public figure it is different.

SJP - you are nuts. All of your arguments boil down to the idea that a liberal can never be a hypocrite, while a conservative must always be so.

So what do you call a Catholic minister of health who permits abortions?

I remember a prominent example of liberal hypocrisy a while ago. Senator Bob Packwood from Oregon, a moderate Republican was a great champion of women’s rights. Later on many women claimed that they were sexually harassed by Packwood. He was considered a hypocrite big time. He did not survive the next election, he lost to a Democrat.

On the other hand, Clarence Thomas was also accused of sexual harassment by Anita Hill. However, Thomas belongs to the far right; he probably thinks that women are inferior to men. I don't think he has ever supported women's rights, never in his life. So sexual harassment fits in nicely with his worldview, he probably thinks that there is nothing wrong with sexual harassment.

So even his worst enemies did not accuse him of hypocrisy, they merely accused him of sexual harassment.

As I said, liberal hypocrisy does occur, but it is much rarer that conservative hypocrisy (and it occurs on different issues compared to conservative hypocrisy). Plain, simple wrong doing or even criminal behaviour is not hypocrisy (as some posters here seem to think).

Wow this thread has really spread all over the world concerning hypocrisy. We were only discussing washington as I remember.
If anyone has followed washington politics over the years it is very clear that the
republicans preach over and over how their values in life are so much better than
the democrats and their religious beliefs and goodness in life.
The democrats don't do that, and that is smart, because they don't have to eat
their own crap when they do dumb things like Clinton did.
So, the point is, don't brag up your behavior in the world, compared to others, then do the dumb deeds, it will come back and smack you in the ass.
And it has again for the republicans.
It's not the point of 'who did what', it's the point of who says they don't do those
things, and then on many occasions 'do them'.

Like Gore does for Global Warming?

He preaches conservation yet lives a lush and lavish lifestyle of jet setting and caravans of limos and SUVs?

Hypocrisy I tell you!

And it has again for the republicans.

Right...the Democrats are just as guilty of hypocrisy.

Why is it more sinful for a politician to be a hypocrite than a plumber or doctor. That statement does not make ANY sense. We more or less accept politicians for being liars and thieves, so what is a little hypocrisy? I don't know about you but I would be comfortable with a doctor I couldn't trust 100%. An honest plumber would be handy too, but everyone is guilty of a little hypocrisy.

That's right, BUT they don't preach how much more values and goodness
they have than the dems, ifthe republicans would keep their lying mouths shut, they
could be as hypocritical as anyone else, without putting large foot in large
mouth.

Most of us want and speak of improving the world re: global warming, but it
will take many years of change, and adjustments for all of us, to make the
changes noticeable. He could improve, sure, but so could all of us, he has
been living the cushy life, all of his life, and he will be slow to change too,
but good for him to be aware of what needs to be done, and I don't expect
him to live in a tent in the meantime.
The kind of people you want to preach about global warming, wouldn't have
the means to do so, the words have to be spread by someone influencial.
Those who are living a 'green' life are doing just that, and probably not
interested in spreading the word.
I guess Gore could sell his jet and limos and suv's, and build a mud hut,
then he wouldn't be able to get from city to city to speak of the 'green' life.

Explain what you expect him to do, in the meantime, then send him a letter
explaining those wishes, I'm sure many others have.
If he was a republican, would you feel the same way about him?

Gore is a politician. Principles are an alien concept to almost all politicians. Kind of like lawyers and truth. Winning is all that counts.

The great majority of politicians belong to a political party. They just take it literally. They get to run the country and it's time to party!!! Line um up!

Sure it does, JLM. A doctor or a plumber does not make a living by telling others how to live their lives, but many politicians do.

Thus, if a doctor is good at medicine, a plumber is good at plumbing, who cares if he has strange, nutty views on totally unrelated topics (like telling others not to commit adultery and he himself commits one).

With a politician however, his job is to pass legislation, to influence other peoples’ lives. So people look at politicians’ lives closely. They don’t mind adultery so much (they gave a pass to Clinton, he was still very popular after his adultery), but they can’t stand hypocrisy.

I don't know about you but I would be comfortable with a doctor I couldn't trust 100%.

I couldn’t care less if the doctor is committing adultery, is homosexual or whatever. If people I know tell me that he/she is an excellent doctor, that is good enough for me.

So perhaps he is not the one who should be speaking.

He could improve, sure,

Gee...do you think?

but so could all of us,

When he starts driving a 4 cylinder economy car like me... I'll start.

Come to think about it, I do a heck of a lot more for the environment that that guy. I recycle everything that can possibly be recycled in my home. I don't nor will ever drive an SUV, I don't leave lights on all over the house, I open the windows when it is a little warm and only use the AC in the extreme heat, etc.

Gore does NONE of that.

been living the cushy life, all of his life, and he will be slow to change too,
but good for him to be aware of what needs to be done, and I don't expect
him to live in a tent in the meantime.

Perhaps he shouldn't be ordained the spokesman for change when he has not changed one bit.

He's making all of you look foolish.

He's a hypocrit.

The kind of people you want to preach about global warming, wouldn't have
the means to do so, the words have to be spread by someone influencial.

He doesn't have to live in a mud hut. That is silly and I am not suggesting that.

For one he could stop the zinc mining on his land. Zinc mining is one of the most destructive type of mining op that is around.

then he wouldn't be able to get from city to city to speak of the 'green' life.
Explain what you expect him to do, in the meantime, then send him a letter
explaining those wishes, I'm sure many others have.

Sell his mansion and live in a modest house. Drive economy cars. When he NEEDS to take a trip, make a flight reservation and fly coach like the rest of us. When he doesn't need to fly he can teleconference. Don't take a limo...rent a small car.

Practice what he preaches. How's that?

Until then... he is a hypocrit.

If he was a republican I'd be embarrassed...but he's not.
