The paranoia that they will leave Alberta is ridiculous. Oil companies will head out and go where exactly? Venezuela (where their assets will be stolen by the government?) Africa (where their employees will be kidnapped and held for ransom?) The Middle East (where they could be attacked by terrorists?) vs Alberta where the government is stable, there is no threat of nationalization and the population is relatively meek?

They'll move to Saskatistan. Years ago when Romano was elected, rigs that were operating just outside Burstall Saskatchewan picked up and moved across the border into Alberta. It doesn't take much convincing to get oil companies to move. Just ask Stelmach.

The oil should flow to whoever wants to pay for it. Doesn't have to move east-west, it could be anywhere.

Just because Ontario exists, doesn't mean they deserve every other resource in this country.

Here in my hometown, lots of people make a living by bringing in crude oil from Venezuela and Saudi Arabia, refining it, and shipping it south.

I agree and disagree. Not having a National Energy Policy is a bad idea too. I'm not suggest we resurrect the Trudeau one - but the country as a whole should have some sort of plan. Even the US has one.

Also - it should not be a "screw one part of the country for another." Given the needs and resources we have across this country, you think we could work out a win-win for all areas.

We can't. The US can and will sue us under NAFTA. We can't have any new social programs unless congress says so. Hasn't anyone read that damn thing yet?

That's why I stay here, to make it a better place. It's difficult fighting against a population so old that they can't change their ways or a provincial government that caters to this demographic.

Why would you want to fight it. You think they are doing the right things

I blame our governments here, and to a much lesser degree Toronto & Alberta, for the youth brain drain.

Rather than blame your neighbor for having a greener lawn than you, why don't you just work on your own lawn.

Can't blame people for needing jobs. It will be at least another decade before our province rebuilds its infrastructure, diversifies our economy and is prosperous again.

It will take a lot longer than ten years.

As for moving out west that will never happen. Been there done that. BC and SK were great, nice people too but I couldn't live in the prairies, too much dirt not enough woods, water or mountains.

You obviously haven't "been there" or "done that".

If capitalist oil companies are shifty it has been found that they stay in place when they are spiked to the ground. Ask Chavez, he has no problem with oil dickheads anymore. Oil companies move for money not because it's good for any economy other than thier's.

Cannuck, thats what I'm doing. Outside provinces recruiting from my own province is causing a youth drain which makes it difficult to grow. That is what I was trying to express. You don't think that has an impact on our way of life or what?

It will take a lot longer than ten years.

Probably, but I'll remain optimistic since a few of these projects have been in the works for a couple years now.

You obviously haven't "been there" or "done that".

Seriously? Come on, do you even know me. I've lived in BC in the Yoho Valley for over a year, then Fernie for 6 months and then briefly in AB, a place called Calgary which I did not like. Which is when I moved home. My sister lives in Calgary and my folks in Fort Crack. Like I said BC was gorgeous and if I had made it to the coast I probably would have stuck it out there. Mountains, woods and OCAEN. I should have been more descriptive when I mentioned the water. What I meant was ocean, not the same as lakes or rivers, sorry that just doesn't cut it. Oh, those were mountains in BC and AB darn I didn't realize that. lol The Rockies are very impressive and made for some great skiing and climbing. The ocean is the Cannuk

Thanks mt! Doesn't seem to be many East Coasters here from what I've seen.
My folks are in Fort Crack, sister in Calgary, many uncles in Edmonton...

I love Newfoundland, St John's is the best city in Canada. I can't wait to go back to Gross Morne this summer. Probably my favorite place in the country. I'm curious, do you like it there or are you just there for the money like everyone else? No worries about me buying into any nonsense coming from Harper. That guy won't win many seats on this coast, we don't trust him. I wish Danny boy was our PM, he is one PROGRESSIVE conservative I would vote for. Those other parts of the country might have money but we have culture something I wouldn't trade for any amount of dirty oil money.

There are a few of us on this forum from the east coast. You'll get to know them if you stick around long enough. This forum is top heavy with western folk and sometimes the conversation can be one sided with western philosophy on religion and politics rising to the forefront. For example, the topic of Danny Williams seems to send most westerners into a frenzy, mainly because he is the total opposite of their man Harper and a threat to their place at the top of the heap. That's understandable when you've been so used to a burdgeoning economy, an economy that is now idling at best. Although there have been a couple of juicy announcements recently with Kearl Lake and Connagher coming online.

Yeah, I came for the money...stayed for the golf. Gotta put the push on so I can retire from this rat race tuit suite. And golfing makes it all worthwhile. The Edmonton area has some wonderful courses. If there was a religion based around golf I think I'd attend. I recommend it for your body and soul.

Good on ya for sticking to your roots. I have several friends who stuck it out on the Rock as well. I sometimes feel like a traitor when I visit them on those rare trips back home. They've been holding the fort while I go off looking for gold and all the while it was sitting right there in front of me. There are 10's of thousands like me who left for the money and curse themselves everyday for selling out.

St. John's rocks.

We have big plans for shipping ports and aquaculture not to mention renewable energy (mostly tidal power & wind turbines).

Aquaculture is my thing. This province has some huge potential, but so far has not been very impressive in it's management of the industry. Part of that is due to the regulatory framework the industry must deal with. Federally you have DFO, EC, CFIA, and even Agriculture and Agri-food Canada. Then there is the provincial departments. Then you have rich land owners, some of whom do not like the visual pollution of buoys in the water...

The province is also a little gun shy, after promoting some "next big things" that didn't pan out. It's very hard to get help now...

Quite a few challenges. All that coastline...

Not as much of an impact as electing the NDP.

and then briefly in AB, a place called Calgary which I did not like.

Well yes, that explains alot. After all, the entire province is just like Calgary.

Hardly. People don't like Danny because he is a big spoiled baby. He just doesn't want to let go of the government teat despite the improving economy there. He's trying to turn Newfoundland int Kweebeck lite. People in the west generally believe in standing on your own two feet. Once Maritimers, at least try that, westerners will probably begin to have some respect for them.

Petrocanada consistently lost money until they went public and the gvt was no longer running the show.... But then again, Suncor just bought-out Pete-Can and we will finally be rid of Trudeau's last remaining reminder of his stupidity.

And, apropos of this thread:

1945 Sun Company drills its first well in Canada – a dry hole in Nova Scotia.

During the last budget NL was the only province...the only province to receive $0.00 in transfer payments. As a matter of fact Harper, in his typical divisive kind of way, managed to manipulate $1.6B away from the province in that budget.

That's some teat we're talking here.

We're standing alright. Tall and proud. Newfoundland is poised to become a major world player on the energy market. I wish Nova Scotia, P.E.I. and New Brunswick the same good fortune.
