When you interact with your friends, do you usually tell them you are better then them?

No, there is no need. They already know that. The information I pass along to my friends is more along the lines of things they don't already know. For example, if you were my friend, I would tell you that Iggy is arrogant and spineless. I know that, at this particular moment in time, you can not acknowledge this reality but someday the light bulb will go on and you will realize that I was right all along (which is not surprising considering I'm better than you).

You forget Peterson's snap election call in 1990 when the liberals were miles ahead in the polls. The Ontario electorate saw it as a sign of arrogance and gave the NDP a majority.

Not at all, Johnny. Do you remember that time? People were really mad at Mulroney. They wanted their revenge on him. However, Tories didn’t have to call an election for two, more years, they could not get at Mulroney.

Then Peterson was foolish enough to call an election. Peterson was chummy with Mulroney, that was good enough for the people (they had worked closely together on the Meech Lake Accord). If they could not vote against Mulroney, they were going to vote against Peterson.

They really were voting against Mulroney by proxy. You may notice that Tories also did terribly in that election. NDP was the only party they could turn to, so NDP won by default (much to the surprise and delight of NDP).

I have no idea what caused Peterson to call election at that time (three years into his huge mandate). But it was a huge mistake. And I think Mulroney was responsible for the miserable performance by Liberals. I don’t think it had anything to do with an early election.

you fail to address the fact that peterson was miles ahead in the polls. you say you have no idea why he would call an election at that time but you completely ignore the obvious. please, don't pretend to be naive. you expect us to believe you have an opinion on everything else but this?

you were right, tenpenny.

In terms of a conservative majority being a 'good thing' at anytime - you're right.

Oh, I know I am right, Captain, and you are typical of many Conservatives. What you would like for Canada is a one party rule, similar to Iran or Saudi Arabia. Where there is a stern, benevolent dictator at the centre, who looks after all his flock (and severely punishes those who stray), where your party controls all the levers of power, there is a token opposition of course (one must have a pretense of democracy) and the farce of election every four years.

Indeed, that is the dream of Harper acolytes, of many conservatives. A perpetual Conservative rule is the ultimate Utopia, the ultimate paradise, nirvana to them.

Johnny, that doesn’t explain why he called the election. Liberals would still have been comfortably ahead in another year. Mulroney was deeply unpopular, the voters were not going to turn to conservatives. Peterson already had a big majority. To me it didn’t make sense why he called the election.

Let me get this straight:

Peterson had a huge majority, he was way ahead in the polls, but he never thought, "hey, i could take advantage of this by calling an election!"

You say Peterson was despised for being chummy with Mulroney, yet he held a huge margin in opinion polls! The only thing that changed was that he CALLED AN ELECTION.

you offer no other explanation, but you are adamant this widely held opinion is outright impossible.

well, thanks for setting me straight. my apologies for wasting your time.

careful there SJP... Your post sounds eerily like internet defamation, libel and slander (I know that you talk to the computer and verbalize all your posts)... This sure looks like a clear-cut case for the courts.

Where the hell is that DurkaDurka Esq. - I may need him as my internets lawyer.

You are in a contest that consists of only one participant, you, whether you are the greatest person out there or not is your business, not what I am looking for in this forum.

Perhaps this will be Iggy’s theme song.
http://www.last.fm/music/Bob+Dylan/_/Blowin'+in+the+Wind

And I can picture the Messiah’s theme song, Goober. It of course, has to be ‘Amazing Grace’. Messiah is the Saviour of Canada after all (according to Harper acolytes anyway). What more appropriate song than ‘Amazing Grace’?

SJP
Are you aware of the history behind that particular Hymn and why the man wrote it?

So SJP were you aware – a simple goggle search would provide the information but an honest answer is all that was requested – Were you aware of the history behind the writing on this Hymn.

Contest? There is no contest between the two of us. You've already admitted you have "limited political knowledge". It would be foolish for you to engage in political debates with me. That doesn't mean I'm not willing to humour you.

There is no such thing as a typical Conservative or Liberal or N.D.P. The only thing there is, is a typical idiot who ties himself to any one of these entities.

Perhaps, JLM. However, when somebody agrees with Harper on just about everything, when he praises Harper to high Heaven, when he trashes Liberals at every opportunity, I draw the logical and reasonable conclusion that that somebody is indeed a loyal conservative, a committed Harper acolyte (in spite of what he may say).

S.J. - I guess you can't see the forest for the trees, what you have just described is the mirror image of yourself to a tee.

Sue away, Captain. I have such a creative accountant you would be lucky to collect a coffee mug from me.

Incidentally, is Durka a lawyer? I didn’t know.

Goober, sure I am aware of the history (incidentally, one of my friends tells me that the music for ‘Amazing Grace’ is pure Indian Classical music, I don’t know if it is true). So what is your point?

To me, that sounds a totally appropriate song for Harper. In addition to pleasing his acolytes, perhaps he may manage to pick up a few Indian votes.

There are millions of people in Canada who may be described as typical Conservative, Liberal or NDP.

So you think millions of Canadians are idiots, do you? I am sure supporters of all the political parties combined would count in millions. Well, maybe they are idiots compared to you, who knows?

Anyway, if you think that people like Chrétien, Trudeau, Paul Martin etc. are idiots, I am proud to count myself among idiots.
