WARNING! - Phones May be Tapped!

I found out today that my phone is probably being tapped. I can call out but am having difficulty with incoming calls. If I can answer a phone call within a second or two of the phone ringing, I am able to connect with the person on the other line. However, after a few seconds, if I do not answer the phone, the line clicks dead and is followed by white noise. I called the phone company and they think the line has been tapped.

This afternoon, we noticed that calls were coming in and the caller would seem to hang up after a few seconds. If this happened once or twice, this would not raise suspicion. However, when it happens 10-12 times in short succession, something is going on.

I had a friend over tonight who is an IT professional. He said a friend of his in Atlanta had the same thing happen to him on Friday. It also happened at his work. He believes that it may be the work of hackers trying to tap his computer.

I do not know what is happening exactly, and am having a repairman come out to check everything on Sunday or Monday, but I wanted to give everyone a head's up and be aware of what is going on.

Well, Toro...good that you alerted the phone company (so that you won't be responsible) just in case there is some sort of a phone scam happening for example...long distance charges being made to your phone? Thanks for the heads up!! It's always good to be aware!

Are you on Dial-Out or High Speed ADSL ?

I have heard of people who have problems with hackers trying to access modem lines to dial out regular modems in the past. I am not sure how they would access your ADSL Modem in that fashion but I guess could over load your line, causing it to overload..

Interesting issue.. Keep us posted..

This just started happening today. I called the phone company and told them what was occurring. It was they who suspect the line is tapped. I explained this to an IT friend who was over tonight, and he told me this happened to a friend of his in Atlanta yesterday who was also under attack by hackers. He changed his phone number and froze all his accounts.

I have a cable modem and a Mac, so I am not so much worried about myself. I am hoping it is some weird thing with the phone. But I just wanted to inform everyone to know what may be occurring.

The repair guy is going to install the stealthy tap, all this other stuff was to get them access to your hardware, the fools built in too many safeguards to be able to do without rebooting it with a modified eprom. Whatever you have been doing stop.

I dropped cable phone, too many times it sounded like I was in an empty rain-barrel.

The phone companies will make you pay for hacker's calls and if you are nice to your phone company they might cut your bill in half but you would still have to pay for calls you did not make.

There is a couple of businesses that got hefty bills in the tune of two hundred and fifty thousand dollars and the phone company decided to cut the bill in half.

The phone representative was interviewed on TV and said it is up to the user to safeguard their phone lines by having software protection, which the businesses said they had.

The businesses have brought legal action against the phone company, which will take years to resolve.

Unfortunately legal action is the only way to teach phone companies that they should refrain from screwing their customers.

Thanks Liberalman

FYI this is what my IT friend wrote

Friend of mine had his phone "attacked" via a Skype number such that he couldn't make or receive calls, while at the same time hackers were trying to wire money out of his bank account, using account info gleaned from his compromised home computer.

Well it's obviously the CIA. You're probably a Muslim terrorist that has been pulling the wool over our eyes for far too long now....or maybe you're one of those Israeli agents that infiltrate web forums and spread lies. Either way, I will no longer trust anything you post.

Sounds like a bad line card at the central office or if you have multiple jacks in your home try disconnecting all the phones and call in using your cell, then plug in each one and see if you get disconnected or any type interference on the line, as far as toll fraud, this can generally only happens with voice mail systems, the hacker uses an outbound transfer to get access to an outside line.
