I think there still may be a way Harper can salvage his government. He should prorogue the Parliament, i.e., declare this Parliamentary session over and start a new session with a budget in January, February or even March.

That will give time for the passions to cool down. Then if Harper consults the opposition parties and brings in a sensible, consensus budget, opposition parties may well support him (or at least not bring him down).

I don’t think Liberals are really ready to assume power, they don’t have a leader. As for NDP, I think they are most effective when they are sniping at the government from outside. Layton would probably much rather stay in the opposition, where he can stay true to his principles and criticize the government whenever he feels like it, rather than be part of the government and forced to compromise.

I think both Lib and NDP feel that Harper’s ineptness in governing has forced them to assume power. If Harper prorogues the Parliament and then can convince the opposition that he can govern sensibly, they may let him stay on.

However, the past trends are against it. Harper hasn’t exactly proved himself to be a consensus builder, a compromiser, a statesman. His usual attitude is ‘my way or highway’.

So I don’t think he will be able to convince the opposition parties that he will govern sensibly. Proroguing the Parliament will only postpone the evil day.

I'm going to assume that this idea of a coalition with the NDP leading using the Liberals as
a marionette and backed up by the Bloc with their loyalty purchased with ever increasing
carrots at the expense of the rest of Canada is perceived as a great thing, at least in
Quebec anyway. Not so much out here in the West...This is going to have to come up
eventually, so I might as well get it out in the open...

Is anyone looking forward past the "Coalition of Canada & Quebec" to this
becoming an East/West thing in a very short order of time??? How's that going to
work in the weeks and months (leading to years) to come? Check out the lay of
the land geographically with respect to the 40th General Federal Election...

Ron hey how are you?

You've made a point and it may have merit, but IMO I do not see the Bloc using this as a weapon.

If you do Ron, please explain how this is advantageous to the Bloc in terms of what the `supposed agenda is.`

I'm doing well scratch and I hope you are too! I'm just tossing out what I'm hearing,
to use the Thread as a sounding board. Utter disgust if the consensus in the workplace
(mine) this morning. When talk of CFL is over and before new inventions comes up, the
focus is politics (this is a very cool place to work).

As far as the Bloc using their status as a weapon or not is only going to be answered with
the passage of time. The concern out this way (my workplace, and seems to be paralleled
on the talk-radio programs) is that this coalition will have to continually purchase each others
loyalty with escalading carrots at a time when Canada can least afford it.

As far as "how this is advantageous to the Bloc in terms of what the `supposed agenda is," the
Liberals and NDP combined still have less seats than the Conservatives, and the Bloc not being
officially a part of this coalition, will have to be repurchased every vote with escalading spiff's for
the benefit of Quebec specifically (perhaps exclusively?) leaving the ROC to float the cost of these
loyalty purchasing promises.

Talk is twisted (at least locally out here, perhaps very locally but again time will tell on that too)
towards some type of political reform as minority governments may be the vogue with 5 official
parties Federally. A reform movement as Western Canada finally having a voice will loose it due
to sheer numbers in Quebec and Ontario again. The Conservatives got the support they did in
the last election (out here anyway) due to promising the least in vote purchasing promises and
the promise to back off the energy sector which powers a significant percentage of the Western
economy. The Liberals & NDP & Greens (as perceived out here...right or wrong) ran on platforms
of hamstring'n the Western economy, yet still funneling what was left out of that same economy.
East of Saskatchewan, the only province in "Have" status is Newfoundland. Talk of separation has
reared its head...again. This is only 100 hours after this coalition became public knowledge. In the
days and weeks to come, this'll only get louder. I, myself, am not a separatist. This will come up
though, and it may or may not lead anywhere (I'm hoping nowhere), but the dynamics have changed
and I'm creating an awareness. Attitudes have changed. Economies have changed. Purse-strings have
changed, and the West will want a say in what's going on in Canada now that it's had a brief taste
of it. In days gone by the West could be dismissed due to a lack of population (comparatively) to
other vote rich areas of the country. That would be a mistake at this point. Creating an awareness.

The West has had somewhat of a voice for less than three years, and may very well loose it due to three
parties in a take over to take power that they couldn't get in an actual election. Screwy...
Right or wrong...you don't have to convince me one way or the other. Just relating things...
P.S. I didn't vote Liberal, but I do happen to reside in that one tiny red speck out on the Prairie.

Great day to you Ron, the Block has to cooperate here, because Duceppe knows that he could work better with the Liberals and the NDP than the Conservatives.

Scratch....I concur completely with your assessment of the situation. Ugly might be too
nice of a word. Sounds like Jack&Jiles (with Stephane in tow) will be addressing the nation
in about ten minutes (3:30pm SK time, so 4:30pm ON time).

It is official Deon will be the sitting PM until the complete process of choosing a new leader takes its natural course.

TheStar.com | Canada | Liberals: Dion would be PM

The Jinnee is out of the bottle.....

Like Jean Chrétien said the other day "BYE BYE STEVEN"

Good Day Socrates!!!!

Yep...Dion will behind the wheel (but not navigating) of their three wheeled bus for the next
half a year. Both Rae and Ignatius distanced themselves from that "honor" over the weekend.

Wasn't part of the terms of Jack&Jiles cooperation that Stephane Dion didn't get to play
in their game (as of 48-72 hours ago)??? Will they be slapping Shephane on the back &
claiming they've been behind him all the time in their press conference in the next few
minutes??? That would be pretty two-faced, but not surprising I guess. Like Mr. Harper,
these are Politicians.

I'm very interested in seeing some opinion poles in the coming days with respect to this
backroom avoidance of the democratic system, at least the differences regionally in how
it is perceived.

Brad Wall, the Premier of Saskatchewan, came out earlier today slamming ALL FOUR
of the Federal Parties for their irresponsibility for scr*wing around with the countries
future when Canada can least afford to have this instability.

It wouldn't surprise to hear the Premier of Alberta come out with a similar public statement
in the very near future, if he hasn't already. Economies have changed. Attitudes have changed.
The dynamic has changed.

Jack&Jiles now wholly support Stephane Dion in their proposed take-over of the Hill.
The overthrow of the current government will take place at the earliest opportunity.
Jack Layton is claiming the advances brought forth by the CCF are somehow to be
credited to the NDP. If Tommy Douglas was alive, he'd be hauling Jack out back &
kicking the living sh*t out of him. The Bloc agrees to this as it gives them the best deal
for themselves and for Quebecois. No doubt....full veto on every vote is a blank cheque.

Bend over, 'cuz this Hydra is going to stimulate your economy!!! Great.......

Ron this is certainly political entertainment at its best.......
Canada deserves better than a kid who claims to be an adult......
Harper called the last election on the grounds that the parliament became dysfunctional, he gets an almost majority and the man makes the biggest mistake a politician can make, starts declaring war on civil servants and on the opposition...
That is a kid pretending his is an adult.........
They are about to get tossed out thuggery has no place in politics, bad for the people.
We are all friends here...

Ron there is no bending over, it is simple, Harper had his chance to prove to Canadians he was the man of all morality as he claimed he was back in 2006 and failed miserably. Instead he shoed that he is vindictive and sneaky.
Harper said that the Liberals and the NDP want power with out earning it, what did Harper do in the past 25 month that have earn him the right to Govern? sweet nothing, instead resolves parliament calling it dysfunctional and starts a new round of disfunctionalety by wanting to virtually eliminate the opposition so he can rise to a self made majority, I bet if Harper had his way he would take the word DEMOCRACY out of the dictionary....The word Democracy to Harper is like Light to a Vampire both make both allergic.

Gotta admit.... It's a shrewd rude move. Put Dion in the drivers seat of a thing doomed to be a train wreck. He's already a lame duck so what's he got to lose? Layton and Duceppe walk away without a scratch because all anyone hears about is the guy on the throttle....

You've got something there Lone Wolf. I wonder if Dion will catch on? I guess the
Liberals can cut him a big enough cheque to clear his personal debt, or he can still
try to arrange to have 56/77 Liberal MP's out for a smoke on the 10th during the
vote.

Dion sure seemed to be in a daze at the press conference. Thankfully there are two other party leaders to keep him in line, because he certainly isn't capable to do it himself...
