I've posted elsewhere some similar concerns Prax, but I'm still hopeful that somebody - in any party - with half a brain will somehow manage to claw their way to the top of the heap and breath a gasping wisp of life into the carcas of common sense to get the ball rolling in a better direction.
Was the GG wrong? I don't think any of us can really know that until we have the advantage of hindsight. All I know is that this where we're at now, and this grace period can still be used well and wisely, if anyone that can have any effect on the outcome chooses to take action with the sincere intention of improving the situation.
One thing I don't agree with in your comment though is that the GG's decision today sets a precedent for future situations. The situation we find ourselves in right now creates a specific set of criteria upon which she has based her decision.
If and when a future Governor General is called upon to fulfill their official role with such a serious decision, I'm sure the contributing factors will be completely different, and will therefore weigh the decision differently. There will likely be little relevance or value in using this situation as a precedent for future problems requiring GG intervention.
Or one would hope so anyway. If we deteriorate to the point where calling in the GG on even a semi-regular basis to resolve the same types of problems we've already encountered would mean that when it's all said and done, we've learned nothing from this, nor managed to find anywhere in this great, huge land better nor wiser candidates to represent us than the ones who've currently brought us to this unsavory juncture in our history.
What a colossally dismal prospect. 8O...:-(
