We have a big Garlic Festival in New Denver. Used to be in Hills but it got too big so they moved to New Denver. This year we had over 5000 people and over 100 booths. It was a little overwhelming for this old fart.

Cliff, that one is really well known in "garlic circles" in both BC and Alberta...purported to be one of the very best "pure" garlic festivals around. The lady Mowich and I were talking about has been attending that one - as a garlic vendor - for years.

Sheperd's Pie is my all-time favorite dish followed by my dad's homemade burgers. Lots of good memories during those meals, but just a few years ago I developed an allergy to ground beef and now I can't eat anything with that in it.

I don't know if this would make any difference but my daughter hasn't been able to eat 'commercial' ground beef for years...makes her sicker than a dog. But, she can eat grass-fed beef (ground or otherwise). I don't know if she's officially allergic to it or just can't stand it, but I'm pretty much the same - can't eat a burger from a restaurant and keep it down!

I buy grass-fed, no additive beef from a local farmer but I have to buy it a side at a time. However, it's worth it! No antibiotics (not necessary if the cow is fed grass), no growth hormones, no commercial feeds (with strange things in it), no ugly fats...just real, good, natural beef. I never get sick or nauseated from it and it smells just great when it's cooking, unlike that supermarket/commercial stuff, which to me smells downright sickening.

Again, don't know if that would make any difference in your case, but it might be worth looking into if you really miss those treats your Dad used to make. There's a lot more info. on beef at www.eatwild.com

What did you have for dinner tonight? I had homemade cabbage rolls, roasted root veggies (beets, carrots, parsnips) and some steamed cauliflower...with homemade sourdough breadsticks made with pumpkin and flax seeds. Not bad...

Has anyone suggested you might try Bison, Starscream? I stopped eating beef and pork years ago when my doctor told me that my arthritis would improve. He was right.

Which spices did you use?

I just ground up some yellow-corn taco chips and added tumeric, garam masala, cinnamon, nutmeg, cumin, chili, coriander, ginger, ground hot peppers, sage, and Gail's garlic herb mix, oh and a couple of sprigs of my rosemary and parsley - finely chopped.

I am having yogurt and some of my blueberries with hemp granola for desert.

We had a small bowl of spaghetti and a green herb salad,
with grape seed/balsamic vinegar dressing.
glass of milk

my daughter served us a mexican rice mix for lunch, along
with squash soup, and sliced ham on with brown bread, just
a very light lunch.

We are older now, and have learned that we cannot eat
the quantities we did in the past, it is just reality,
as if one wants to retain a nice body, the food intake
is crucial, and the nutrition intake is crucial.
When I think back to many of the big 'spreads' we used
to turn out, and ate like horses, and still looked good,
I'm amazed, sure can't do that any more.

Tonight I had... (and I'm writing this 'recipe' roughly from memory.. tweak according to what you've got).

a medium onion, chopped into chunks
3 cloves fresh garlic minced
coarse ground pepper
3Tbsp basil
2tsp oregano

(sautée the above to caramelize while prepping and adding the following)
2 cups fresh mushrooms
(once mushrooms are caramelizing add...)
5 chicken breasts cubed
1/2 - 1 cup dried cranberries

(once chicken is browned, add)
1/2 to 1 cup red wine
1/4 cup chicken stock
1-2 tsp salt

(as it comes to a boil...)

2 stalks celery chopped
1 medium zucchini cubed

let simmer until chicken is cooked and liquid begins to reduce.

This is a 'by the feel' recipe... throw stuff in a skillet until it looks right. Tweak with it as fits you. In the end we got a super flavourful, sweet, red wine sauce with chicken and veggies that, served over rice, an 8 and 9 year old devoured like you'd never see them devour take out. All in all, a victory in my books.

And you would not believe how good my house smells tonight. lol.

I love "one dish" meals and that one sounds great...and smells great too!

How do you do your venison? I have a couple of steaks in the freezer.

Risus - I think a reply will be forthcoming from Mowich on this one...I asked her about it today and she promised to post her cooking method right here! I was curious too.
