I'm not quite sure what your point is.

My point is you are a LIAR!

I do not know anybody who asked for this dept. It seems to me that it was hoisted on us by politicians thinking they could buy votes. Sure Tommy Douglas sold us a utopian image of share and share alike, kinda like they teach in kindergarten. But blaming a generation or even two on this mess is a little like the old trick of pointing a finger at someone else only to find three more pointing back at you.

He's too much of an idiot to understand you, Cliff!

I can understand the logic behind wanting to get away from non-democratic institutions like the Monarchy

Canada's monarchy would be undemocratic if it was an Absolute Monarchy. But it isn't. It's a democratic Constitutional Monarchy, a form of government in which a monarch acts as head of state within the parameters of a constitution, whether it be a written (like Canada's), uncodified (like the UK's) or blended constitution and in which the Head of State has little political power. On top of that Canadians elect their political leader - the Prime Minister - in democratic General Elections. There is nothing undemocratic about the Constitutional Monarchy. In fact, I believe it to be the best form of governance in today's world.

You know one thing I have always admired about Quebec, it is their refusal to surrender their culture to the rest of the Country. So often I hear complaint about our Country becoming Americanized, but yet many of those same people often call for the end to the Monarchy. Our connection to the Monarchy is really just symbolic now, the Queen really has no say in our destiny.

Why should we abandon a parliamentary system that serves us well, distinguishes us from our neighbors to the south, and is a huge part of where we come from? Is it to erase how Canada came into being?

The Liberal Party of Canada is adrift in a sea of stupidity and can't seem to find a star by which to chart a fresh course.

Supporting monarchy based on tradition only is silly. I do support monarchy in principle, but not at all owing to any traditional reason.

As for being different from the US, that's silly too. If our goal is to be different from the US, then may I recommend we switch sides when driving, dump the English language, dump NATO and NORAD, and do a host of other things just to be different.

Heck, there's red and white in the US flag, so let's get rid of that in our flag too.

What's wrong with traditions, cultural or otherwise?

I'm for culture, which I sidtinguish from blind tradition, as culture implies an understanding of why one does something as opposed to doing it just because daddy did it.

Now just for the record, while I prefer elective monarchy over republic, I would prefer republic over inherited monarchy.

From a July 2, 2011, CBC News report:
Quote:
"Another poll of 1,005 Canadians conducted online by Abacus Data on June 23 and 24 suggests 63 per cent of Quebecers are opposed to the monarchy while only 13 per cent in the province support the institution. In the rest of Canada, 41 per cent support the monarchy and 32 per cent oppose it. (The survey's margin of error was plus or minus 3.2 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.)"

Support is lukewarm across the country at best.

The burning question is............"Is she an asset or a liability"? I've generally given her credit for being an asset but have never seen any figures on it and I realize with the amount of the G.G.'s spending I could well be wrong. I wonder if the G.G. has to report his/her expenses back to Lizzy!
