Toronto Police are asking for help identifying a woman who threw a chair off a condominium balcony towards a busy downtown Toronto highway in a viral video.
In the video, which police say was taken on Saturday around 10 a.m. in the Harbour and York Sts. area, a young blond woman can be seen picking up what appears to be a folding chair and throwing it over a balcony railing. The chair plummets dozens of storeys towards the Gardiner Expressway and Lakeshore Blvd. The video ends before the chair hits the ground.
Police say other items were tossed as well and landed in front of the entrance to the condo building.
The video was posted with the caption “good morning.”
The woman is wanted for mischief endanger life.

Toronto Police have identified the woman responsible for tossing a chair off a condo balcony towards the Gardiner Expressway over the weekend.
A video posted on social media shows a blond woman throwing the chair over the balcony dozens of floors above Harbour and York Sts. on Saturday around 10 a.m.
The posted video had the caption “good morning.”
The video ends before the chair hits the ground, and police say it landed at the entrance of the condo building.
There were no injuries.
The woman who threw the chair – along with other items – is wanted for mischief endanger life.
Police aren’t revealing how they identified the woman.
“Investigators have identified her and are giving her time to get a lawyer and turn herself in,” Const. David Hopskinson said early Tuesday afternoon.
At this point there is no time frame for the woman to get representation and present herself to police.
Mayor John Tory said this “idiotic behaviour” won’t be tolerated and the woman will be brought to justice
“This could have caused death or injury and is not acceptable,” he said, adding she will stand in a court for her actions.

The 19-year-old woman wanted for throwing a chair off a downtown Toronto condo balcony has surrendered to Toronto Police.
Marcella Zoia, of Toronto, faces three charges in the disturbing incident that was captured on video and posted to social media, drawing outrage from across the city.
She had made arrangements to turn herself in after 6:30 a.m. Wednesday and surrendered to police at 52 Division at 7 a.m. She will appear in
Police on Tuesday had said they knew her identity and were urging her to contact a lawyer and police.
The video – which police said was taken Saturday at 10 a.m. in the York and Harbour Sts. area – shows a woman tossing a patio chair off the balcony of a condo and towards the Gardiner Expressway. The chair plummets dozens of floors and the person filming the video cuts away before the chair makes contact with the ground.
The video was captioned with “Good Morning.” Police said other items were tossed off the balcony as well.
Zoia is charged with mischief endangering life, mischief damage property under $5,000, and common nuisance.

WARMINGTON: Cops now 'walk the beat' on social media

A beer can hurled at a baseball player, a bucket of water tossed at a subway passenger, food projectiles targeted at politicians and now a chair thrown from a 20th-floor balcony of a downtown condo.
You can throw it, but you can’t hide from today’s social media sleuths.
“This chair throwing is the highest reported case that I have ever seen,” said Const. Scott Mills, Toronto Police’s social media officer. “It started on Saturday on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and other platforms and didn’t stop.”
Online media policing has come of age.
“We now walk the beat on social media,” said Mills. “We work in partnership with the public.”

Hundreds contacted police about the viral video of a woman — allegedly Marcella Zoia, 19 — chucking the chair toward the Gardiner Expressway 20 floors below.
Within minutes, people not only figured out who she was but found her online profile, too.

Police ended up asking Zoia to turn herself in to be charged with public mischief endangering life.
“I want to thank everybody who reported this and let them know we appreciate it,” said Mills.
It wasn’t always this way.
Remember when Luka Magnotta was identified in 2012 posting a murder on a gore site? A U.S. man noticed it but couldn’t get Canadian police to take him seriously.
With the reponse to the latest video, you can see how things have changed.
Today, officers, including Mills, Const. David Hopkinson, Const. Allyson Douglas-Cook, York Regional Police Const. Andy Pattenden and OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt, not only monitor what’s happening online, but participate.
They develop contacts and offer the public a point person to contact.
“We receive many direct messages on Twitter,” said Mills. “We respond to it but it is still unofficial so it is important for people to contact police by phone or in person, as well.”
That said, in 2019, if it comes in on social media, police are on it.

“The public are the best detectives a police service has,“ said former Toronto police chief David Boothby at a CrimeStoppers event last year.
He’s right.
And with social media, the public can very quickly provide a pool of detectives numbering in the hundreds of thousands.

Chair tosser influenced by peer pressure: Lawyer

Strong peer pressure compelled a 19-year-old woman to hurl a chair over a highrise balcony down to Maple Leaf Square where it shattered, her lawyer said on Wednesday.
Marcella Christianna Zoia, 19, a dental hygenist student, was released on bail Wednesday after Toronto Police charged her with mischief endangering life, mischief damage to property valued under $5,000, and being a common nuisance.
Speaking after his client’s bail hearing, lawyer Greg Leslie said the woman had a “momentary lapse in judgment” when she pitched a chair over the 55 Bremner Blvd. balcony. He added Zoia, who works as a bottle server at high-end bars, was under strong pressure from others to launch the chair.
“It’s clear Ms. Zoia is the one who threw the chair,” said Leslie. “This is not a case whereby we don’t know who did it. It was absolutely peer pressure and a momentary lapse in judgment.”
He added the media put her under a microscope for three days, saying she’s embarrassed and has endured a “traumatic experience.”
Video of the notorious chair toss went viral. Police issued a call for the public to help identify Zoia who is shown throwing a chair — which misses the Gardiner Expressway and hits the street below — over a balcony.
After her bail hearing, Zoia applied lipstick and straightened her hair on the elevator ride before staring silently at the cameras outside the College Park courthouse.

“She wished it never happened. She never wished anyone would be hurt,” said Leslie. “She understands the public outrage. You all heard what’s going on in the video. Those people were putting peer pressure on her.”
Leslie said the police are continuing their investigation into the incident.
Zoia was released on a consent bail of $2,000 and was ordered to live with her mother Maria, a cleaner, at her Harding Ave. home.

Justice Rebecca Rutherford also ordered Zoia to obey her mom’s rules and routine. Leslie said the judge refused to impose conditions banning her from balconies and highrise apartments because it’s unreasonable.
Zoia was also prohibited from contacting the other four people on the balcony or from possessing any weapons, ammunition, explosives or intimidating device.
She returns to court March 22.

Chair thrower tossed out of dental hygienist school: Lawyer

A 19-year-old woman who allegedly hurled a chair over a highrise balcony down to Maple Leaf Square has been expelled from her dental hygienist course.
Marcella Christianna Zoia, 19, never appeared for her case at Old City Hall but her lawyer Gregory Leslie said his client has suffered consequences since last month when Toronto Police charged her with mischief endangering life, mischief damage to property valued under $5,000 and being a common nuisance.
“She was expelled from her course and that’s very unfair,” Leslie told reporters Friday.

“Where’s the presumption of innocence for a young lady who made a mistake” when she pitched a chair over the 55 Bremner Blvd. balcony, said Leslie.
“She’s upset and very remorseful. She wants this matter to be over with. It will be resolved in a way that benefits her and society,” said Leslie. “It has been extremely embarrassing for her and she has lost a lot of friends.”
“If the Crown is expecting my client to go to jail, then we will absolutely go to trial. We don’t want to go to trial,” said Leslie.

He added that Zoia, who works as a bottle server at high-end bars, was under strong pressure from others to launch the chair.
A person of interest is being pursued by the police in the ongoing investigation, but that man is not forthcoming at this stage, said Leslie.
Video of the notorious chair toss went viral.
Police issued a call for public help identifying the woman shown throwing the chair, which missed the Gardiner Expressway and crashed to the street below.
Leslie said his client just turned 19 in November and her outwardly-happy exterior after the bail hearing doesn’t show the emotional turmoil and distress she has experienced since last month.
Zoia was released on a consent bail of $2,000 and was ordered to live with her mother.
Her case returns to court April 26.

The woman charged with hurling a chair off a high-rise downtown balcony is expecting all charges against her to be dropped, her lawyer said on Friday.
A video of Marcella Zoia, 19, went viral earlier this year when the bottle server at high-end bars launched the chair into the public domain below.
Zoia, who wasn’t in court on Friday, is charged with mischief endangering life, mischief damaging property valued under $5,000 and being a common nuisance.
Lawyer Gregory Leslie told the Old City Hall court he has had the first pretrial meeting with the Crown.
“We are hoping for a discharge,” Leslie said outside court.

Leslie has said that Zoia only tossed the chair because of peer pressure, and has since paid the price because her act got her kicked out of a dental hygienist course.
Zoia is out on $2,000 bail and is forced to live with her mother.
“She is living at home and doing fine … and trying to get into another school,” Leslie said.
Zoia and her act, plus an array of sexy postings of herself on social media attracted international media attention.
Her next court date is June 14.

WATCH THIS! Chair Girl stars in new shock video

Notorious social media-loving Marcella Zoia, aka Chair Girl, apparently couldn’t help herself.
CFRB 1010 obtained Instagram video of the high-flying party girl in action allegedly over the weekend.
The 19-year-old hellraiser made headlines in February when she was accused of hurling a chair off a highrise balcony down to Maple Leaf Square, narrowly missing pedestrians and cars.
But according to CFRB, she’s back at her hard-partying best as revealed in a new Instagram video.
She’s front and centre for the late night livestream.
Story continues below
In the footage, a male voice can be heard saying: “Over here’s the coke. The coke. The cocaine.”
Zoia replies: “It’s Coca-Cola, Coca-Cola. Oh, f**k.”
The video then segues into the blond Brazilian telling viewers: “Do not throw chairs off balconies.”

The video, which has since been deleted from her Instagram, comes hot on the heels of last week’s news stories about the party girl’s hopes to have the charges laid against her on Feb. 13 dropped.
She faces mischief endangering life, mischief damage to property under $5,000, and common nuisance.
Her lawyer told a tale of woe about his client in court last month, explaining she’d been booted from her dental hygiene program and has lost friends over the chair episode.
Her case is slated to return to court June 14. But Zoia remains weirdly unrepentant.
In another recent social media post, she puts up a poster with the word “apology” at the top that states no one was harmed, she was drunk, Canadians aren’t nice and she wants to go home to Brazil.
Her lawyer, Greg Leslie, was not commenting Monday but last month said his client wants to put the whole sordid affair behind her.
“She’s upset and very remorseful. She wants this matter to be over with,” Leslie said. “It will be resolved in a way that benefits her and society.”
“It has been extremely embarrassing for her and she has lost a lot of friends,” he added at the time.
The lawyer blamed the potentially dangerous stunt on peer pressure.

Chair Girl wants to kill cocaine use rumours: Lawyer

High-flying Chair Girl wants to prove she’s not a cocaine user and party animal — despite a live-stream video last week in which a partygoer says: “Over here’s the coke. The coke. The cocaine.”
Marcella Zoia corrected him in the video — featured on her Instagram account — saying it was “Coca-Cola, Coca-Cola.”
Zoia’s lawyer Greg Leslie said his client underwent drug testing last week to dispel the rumours circulating in social media that she snorts cocaine. Drug test results should be out Wednesday.
Zoia, 19, hasn’t exactly kept a low-profile since being accused of throwing a chair off of a downtown highrise balcony earlier this year. Last week’s video was widely shared and she has resumed posting provocative pictures of herself to Instagram.

After turning herself in to Toronto Police in February, officers charged her with mischief endangering life and other offences in connection with the chair that was tossed from the condo balcony, landing next to the Gardiner Expressway.
“We’re concerned that with the reports (of alleged cocaine use) last week people will come to unfounded conclusions,” said Leslie. “She wasn’t doing cocaine that night and she paid for a private lab to do a test the next day after the story came out.
“She doesn’t do cocaine, but because of this social media clutter and Twitter rumours, people are speculating that she does,” added Leslie.
Zoia, meanwhile, has returned to Instagram with posts which include images of her lapping up the sun in a bikini on a yacht and flipping her hair while partying at a nightclub. She’s been sharing her Kardashian-like lifestyle with 21,000 followers.
Released on $2,000 bail in February, Leslie said Zoia is trying resume her studies. She was expelled from a dental hygienist program after being charged by police.
Leslie has insisted his client is remorseful and only committed the reckless act because of peer pressure. He wants Zoia to get a second chance and all charges against her to be dropped.
Zoia returns to court June 14.

Looking at her I can tell you 100% that she is a coke head. She may be right that she doesn't do it but she never said she doesn't like smelling it. Anyways coke is out of your system in less than a week.
