Of course. As one of my side duties as a Cpl. was to pick up and drop off prisoners from my unit from the brig. Some got out early for keeping their mouths shut.

He's going to jail because he couldnt keep his mouth shut.

The only way it will be in vogue is if he walks out of court tomorrow as a free man.

One need only look to Cindy Sheehan as an example. As soon as the GOP was swept from Congress in GW's second midterms she was quickly tossed aside... and the war slugged on. She had served her purpose to the Libs.
You have a good point. But of course, Sheehan was never "made a martyr" (i.e., punished).

I calculate Manning's future rests on whether war or secrecy is a big issue about the time he gets out. If so, he's a hero and martyr. If not, just another ex-con.

Sheehan was not made a martyr because she continued to press the newly elected Democrats to end the war in Iraq as they promised they would. She served her purpose to them and then became a simple nuisance to the Libs. Once she started in on the Democrat controlled Congress the cameras stopped rolling.

I am withholding some opinions until Manning is sentenced. I want to see what he gets hit with.

Sic transit gloria mundi.

Heck, I'll start then. I think the judge was dead on. Manning did not intend to aid the enemy, so the "not guilty" part was correct. So was the the "guilty" on the violations of the Espionage Act and the illegal disclosure of classified information. He's a knothead and a punk. He should get whatever it takes to make sure he actually does at least 10 years inside.

Similar to what was said to victorious Roman Generals during their Triumph... Momento Mori

I agree with the judge on that. He'll be lucky if he only gets 10.

Which circles? Does he get issued a detailed statement of the reasons, for him to photocopy and pass around?

Any of the anti war groups. Probably lots of other leftys as well. Other than military people I doubt many people even care. He is yesterday's news. We talked about it on the ride home tonight and of the 17 people on the crew bus about half didn't even know who he is.

Hmm... not to be cynical, but let me guess. The founder of the "wiki" concept, wikipedia, is taking a silent neutral stand.

What I don't get is, most of the stuff revealed showd American diplomats and agents to be, in fact, consistently striving to find the most amenicable solution to each situation, in spite of their personal opinions, like the situations faced by MBAs working for shareholders.

If I were a foriegn nation with a paranoid leader, I'd suspect him of being a double agent. He might be another Popov being allowed to disapear into the hands of his controllers.

If guilty, I'd give him hard community service, like... let's see you handle Afghanistan's intelligence problems.

He will come north to Canada of course and become a business person.
there are plenty of companies that will hire him. Yes he will leave with a
dishonorable discharge he will also have a high profile and will be welcomed
by pressure groups to them he is a hero. I am pleased he didn't get a guilty
verdict on the serious charges they were nonsense in the first place.
Besides in America if Zimmerman can get away with murder why can't this
man get away with a few things.
