Why UK should abolish its 'failed' monarchy

Contrary to what anti-monarchists would like, the large majority of Brits are still firm monarchists. And the monarchy, as a tradition, still gets broad support in places like Canada.

As much as I would like to see her lose that power I don't think it would be that easy. It would mean opening the constitution and I don't believe any govt has the balls to do that.

Not instantly. It would require a change in the constitution and that always gets messy. It would take years to do it if past attempts to change the constitution are any indicator.

As much as I would like to see her lose that power I don't think it would be that easy. It would mean opening the constitution and I don't believe any govt has the balls to do that.

Which is unfortunate. There are a number of things that should be fixed in it.

Yes, I overstated that. Not instantly as far as losing the power is concerned. But the process to void that power would begin instantly.

It's a moot point though. The Queen will never use that power; it will remain simply symbolism.

Well the Queen used to be a great rider, and for most of her life I think her favourite horses have been Canadian ones, gifted to her from the RCMP stables.

The cost of switching over is enough of a deterrent. I have an issue with it because of the tradition weaved within our Nation and service under both the Queen and Old King George is something my family has done with honour and dedication for five generations.

The fact is the Brits got rid of the monarchy and instead the ended up with
Oliver Cromwell and things were worse. We all know what happened to

I have noticed over time on here that many Canadians think that their country is some sort of special case. That the rest of the world thinks that Canada is important in world affairs and that it's taken notice of. In fact, the reality is different. Most of the world outside Canada rarely thinks about Canada.

The same is true of the monarchy. Many Canadians are of the impression that the Queen somehow treats Canada more favourably than she does the other Realms, that she somehow gets to wield less power in Canada than elsewhere.

It's a load of rubbish, of course. If the Queen wants to get rid of the Canadian Government or make Canada declare war on another country she can do that as much as she can in her other 15 Realms. The Queen could take Canada to war against the USA, Botswana or Chile and there's nothing you can do about it.
