The U.S. plan for unilateral world dominance is totally contrary to Canadian multilateralism and we should not be part of it, and to suggest that a ‘seat at the table’ would give us some influence is total nonsense. Canada should build up its own armed forces to be used for constructive purposes, rather than acting as a stamp of approval for unilateral U.S. militarism.

Yes, you should indeed. Anytime soon?

Well that's the plan...

Problem is the upgrade is a paint job on a house that is falling down. Put aside that the whole plan is not going to get the big ticket spending until year four and five and minority governments haven't lasted more than 3. We may not even see the upgrade. I would like to see Canada spend more than twice what it currently spends on defense from 1.1% of GDP to somewhere around 2.5%.

Oh, it's not just that which will rise to the surface like a bloated corpse, Cathou.

Harper was trying to back away from previous Reform/Alliance/Conservative immigration policies a little earlier today because it made them look like a bunch of xenophobic nutbags. he's not talking about changing the policy mind you, just prettying up the language.

Their policy towards natives is still pretty much to cut off the funding and arrest anybody who argues.

Oh...and arresting people? The Reform/Alliance/Conservatives have supported and even promoted racial profiling not just for national security, which is despicable enough, but for regular policing.

Lets see sombody try to support that. Yes, I will call you a racist redneck bigot if you do.

Back to the original purpose of this thread. I do believe Stephen Harper will be the next Prime Minister of Canada. He most likely will win a minority government. The official opposition could be the Bloc should the left wing vote be split between the Liberals and NDP.

If the Bloc is the opposition, the government will be brought down again, perhaps quicker than this current government. If the Liberals are opposition, this could work for a while.

There are a few Conservative things I'd like to see brought about. A majority Conservative government would be a nightmare. However with them on a leash with the Liberals on the other end, it could be benificial. Plus, I don't think the west could take it if Ontario decided the election not in their favour once again. I won't be voting for them, but I don't think their minor victory would be the end of the world.

For my own political allignement and aspirations, I think a conservative minority is the best solution. Don't get we wrong, I'm as socialist as one can be without turning communist. But we are talking about the feds, their impact on me is minimal.

With a conservative minority, I'm hoping the Canadian goverments impact on my life to be reduced to nothing.

...and by that do you mean that you're hoping a Conservative government will spur the separtists on to victory?

I honestly doubt a Harper goverment will be able to fight a referendum. And who will do it for him? Jean Charest?

Martin? No one likes him here. Dion? Even worse. Lapierre? He is viewed as an idiot. Even the TV show he had before comming back to politics was relegated to the night shift. TQS has higher ratings now that he is gone. He is an idiot.

dont be so sure, electoral campain is expensive, and the bloc couldnt afford two campain within a few month. And calling an election especially after we just have two in two years would cost vote to Duceppe if he dont have a good reason. if Harper take the governement, and dont try to pass law that touch same-sex marriage, abortion, death penalty, province competances, he might keep his governement longuer than Martin...

but a conservative governement in the actual situation would be terrible for quebec since no minister would come from here

I seriously doubt Harper will be in power come 2009 when the next possible referendum can take place. Besides, who says a referendum is on its way? Quebec doesn't want another referendum.

The separatist forces have picked up a lot of steam on the Sponsorship scandal, Das. 2009 is a long way away though, especially in politics. Trying to predict results for then given today's situation is like counting chickens before you've bought the hens that will lay the eggs.

Thank you Liberal Party! And these are the guys who still won't hesitate to wrap themselves in the Canadian flag and proclaim themselves the only party to defend federalism. Shame!

I think the Bloc has picked up steam, but I don't think the idea of independence has. The Bloc represents a safe form of protest for Quebecers. I mean, they send these guys to Ottawa to spook the Liberals and Conservatives, knowing that they have no real power to further their true agenda, which is Quebec independence.

The occurrence of this scandal has nothing to do with whether independence is a wise choice. Being independent would not preclude having a similar scandal in Quebec City.
