Why seniors shouldn’t get discounts

Seniors today are among the richest, most comfortable people in the country. (That’s why.)

By Peter Shawn | Maclean's – Sun, 24 Nov, 2013

While Travelling in Hungary this past summer with his wife, Ernst Friedel had a revelation. “Anyone 65 and over is allowed to use the Budapest transit system for free,” he reports. “And everyone seemed very happy about that.”

Well, that'll be sure to piss some people off.

Actually there is a lot of validity to that. The seniors today (mostly born after 1930) are in a far different situation than our fathers' generation who contended with two wars and a major depression while the seniors today have come through 6 decades of relative prosperity.

Now mind you there are discounts I really like like the fishing licence thing good deal.
As a senior as long as they don't mess with pensions or government benefits I won't
go protest if they do that is another matter

Now that senors are no longer poverty stricken, and we have solved that problem nation wide. Who needs the most help next?

As opposed to now?;):p

In all seriousness, it doesn't bother me that senior citizens get discounts. In the grand scheme of things, it's not like it's really hurting anyone.

Well, actually it just might be. I think many seniors with adequate means donate at least some of their savings to charity, but I would imagine there are some that don't. Just think what a difference it would make if say it was donated to the local hospital or to the homeless. So I say it is quite possibly hurting someone.

Have you noticed that Shoppers drug Mart puts on a senior day every Thursday (some places the first Thursday of the month)
With a qualifier...only things that are not already on sale.
That's the day that almost everything in the store has a 5% sales tag, so it leaves not too many things for the 20% discount...

To paraphrase Dingwall........

I mostly avoid Shoppers Drug Mart. My doctor informed me that S.D.M. is the most expensive of all the drugstores in town here. I know a few years ago the one here nicked me $7 for a pair of nail clippers.

Northern Ontario,
Seniors do get discounts, but most of the saving we get are because we are willing to wait for a sale......younger people want something like yesterday.....case in point....I'll bet there are a lot of people buying a Mac or an IPad this week. But if you're willing to wait till this Friday and even buy online from the apple store you'll get a big discount.

RIch old people are cheap. Last weekend on our annual food drive we asked that people with long driveways, locked gates etc leave a bag by the road to save us time. On a 3k stretch of oceanfront acreage's about 95% retired not a single bag was left out.

Now that response took your brilliance to new heights...... and that lol must be the grand finale.

Your so easy to screw with, you big $lut I'm just messing with you. Lol.

Don't take it so seriously.
The idiot comment was first coined by gerryh.
I'm just mocking his constant use of it.
By constantly using it also.

Lol

So your comment about the brilliance of it is extra funny today.
Thanks for the good laugh.

Think about this.

If your message was well-advertised, there were probably "unauthorized" people cruising this kind of neighbourhood looking for freebies. Seniors are smart enough to know that might happen. Why should they leave stuff at the curbside for just anybody to pick up?

For those that did leave something out, maybe somebody else beat you to it.

The problem may be with your expectations, and not with the seniors.

---

As far as the topic in general, seniors' discounts offered by businesses are simply good business (i.e. attracting more customers, increasing sales, increasing profits). They wouldn't be offered if a business actually lost money on them.

Discounts offered on public (taxpayer-funded) services are a little trickier to evaluate. A lot of seniors Do need the breaks. Not everybody retires rich. But yes, there are some who don't need the discounts.

You got no Idea about where we are. This is RURAL. Not one of them dropped anything off at the firehall either even though the event is well advertised.

Everybody knows there are no dishonest RURAL people.

I still think you are making a lot of assumptions, including the assumption that because your particular drive fell flat it shows that the people in question don't give to any charity.

I choose the charities to which I donate. I can't honour them all. Sally Ann gets the lion's share of my charitable donations. I know they use the money well. And there are a select few others where I will happily donate.
