The WSJ's Bill McGurn has written a fascinating column that exposes the weird dichotomy of the Left's views towards despotism.
During the election, Donald Trump was routinely likened to Hitler. The headlines suggest not much has changed. From the New Republic: "Donald Trump Is Already Acting Like an Authoritarian." National Public Radio: "Donald Trump: Strong Leader or Dangerous Authoritarian?" The New York Times: "Beyond Lying: Donald Trump's Authoritarian Reality." The New Yorker: "Trump's Challenge to American Democracy."

What's striking here is that the same folks who see in Mr. Trump a Mussolini in waiting are blind to the soft despotism that has already taken root in our government. This is the unelected and increasingly assertive class that populates our federal bureaucracies and substitutes rule by regulation for the rule of law. The result? Over the Obama years, the Competitive Enterprise Institute reckons, Washington has averaged 35 regulations for every law.
Besides mental illness, can anyone proffer a reasonable theory as to how they can be so blind to what has occurred over the past 8 years?

The narrative is supreme. An election defeat is so overwhelming it causes hysteria because they had no idea that half the country is comprised of the "other".

The left does not believe in democracy. At best they believe in groupthink. WHich is why regulations appeal to them. Rules are authoritarian and might trigger someone but regulations are made by the collective so they are good.

Because it's justified by there own self righteousness

Everyone must obey social justice or suffer and be shamed publicly.

Authoritarian leanings are neither right nor left. There clear evidence that Trump favours an authoritarian government.

Therein lies the answer. They are just too weak kneed to admit that they are all one in the same. If Trump were to propose to outlaw the parodies of him om SNL or outlaw speech that would insult, demean, or otherwise offend, I would probably agree, but so far he has not, he just doesn't find the humour in it. He speaks his mind and so far doesn't object to others doing likewise. In this country our government seeks to make offensive speech illegal, and in some cases has already done so, unless it conforms with the orthodoxy. If no one sees where we are headed, woe be to you. We'll see how Trump handles all this, but the alternative is not very pretty either, that we are seeing already.

Funny how the right wingers on this forum forgot how Wally and the Tea Baggers referred to Obama as a Nazi even before he got into the White House with them applauding all the while. Why is the delusional right wing blind to its own despotism??

speaking of despotism:

Sorry T. The fact that you are allowed to make that comment defeats your argument. Freedom of speech is a left wing concept as are most of the basic freedoms in Canada's Charter and the US Constitution.

The fight against free speech is right in line with the attitude that permeates society today - that what you say makes it so. People are so out of touch with reality, it's pathetic.
The modern day solution to problems is to deny that there is a problem and attack anyone who says that there is a problem. That's why nothing constructive ever gets done.
Governments do it, corporations do it, they have meetings and talk about what's bothering people then they think that because they had the meeting and talked about it, the people shouldn't be bothered any more. It's been fixed.
Or they pass some silly unenforceable law/rule that never gets enforced so changes nothing.
People can't accept any more that life isn't always sunshine and roses. Bad times happen now and then. But just stick your head in a dark place and everything is fine.
My nephew went for a drivers test recently. They told the class that no cell phone use was allowed during the test. Three people used their cell phones during the test and nothing was done about it.
I visited a friend in the hospital the other day and when I went out there are 'no smoking on hospital property' signs all over the place but the parking lot had a dozen people smoking there. One was the security guard who's supposed to keep people from smoking and another was a nurse. Of course there are no ashtrays allowed so the ground is littered with cigarette butts.
Returning to the hospital again one of the patients was outside the front door in a wheel chair smoking.
So much for unenforceable laws!

It's why we have a democratic system. Because to far left or too far right both become authotorian against the opposition. This is why center is best. No one is oppressed.

No one really gets what they really want.

Oh, you're mad. How cute.
That's all you got? You side is really f*cked then isn't it? It only shows that desperate people do desperate things.

That the same group that is advocating that the net is the source of 'fake news' or that censorship is the solution??
Think of it this way, this period of time just makes the list longer of who can be arrested for support an attempted coup. Should make the rebuilding go a lot faster once they are out of the road. Trump might have to pardon all the pot smokers to make room for them though.

They never gave anything to Americans and the last 30 years shows they like to take things away rather than bestow them on the voters.

left wing / right wing
criminality rumps ideology every time
the cookoo will hide its eggs in any nest it can find

problems which need to be solved do not have ideologies

...and hillary should be prosecuted.
not because she is left wing:
but because she, and worse, her backers, are among the most heinous criminals out there

jeez, they still try to hang 90 year old concentration camp janitors, where the numbers on the sign always change lower, but LEFT WINGER SOROS, who turned jews into hitler, is still running around out there wrecking countries?
