Why are many Christians so intolerant of other religions and spiritual paths?

Ah, the Bible. Words of other humans claiming to be channeling a god. lol
One of the main tennets of agnosticism is that the natures of gods are quite far beyond the comprehensive abilities of us mere humans. And as I mentioned in another post somewhere, I'd have thought that an omnipotent god surely would have the ability to make its intentions crystal clear to each of us mere humans yet there are mere humans arguing about what this, that, and the other passages in "god's word" actually mean. :)
What if this God were as snarky as some who post here? What if he said to himself. I am going to give these people a book. Everything they need to know will be written in it and there are things they don't need to know and those things will not be written in it. They are going to have to trust me. Then let's say we die and arrive before God. He's says: What happened? We say: Un, well, I couldn't figure you out while on earth, I didn't really know you. He says: What do you think that book was for? We say: Uh well I didn't so much as understand it. He says: Did you read it? All of it? Did you ask for help?
Well, you get the picture. Maybe God knows he is beyond our comprehensive abilities and that is why he gave us the book.

Gerry, I am hard pressed to comment on your comment. Jesus - yes he is the new covenant. We no longer have to practice levitical law - no sacrificing of bulls etc. What I do not understand is how you conclude that Paul is promoting levitical law. I read all of the new testament often. In no way does Paul advocate following the law of which you speak. As for the ten commandments, we are all guilty. I hope you are not relying on the keeping of the 10 commandments to be saved. Before other's comment, I am not suggesting we all can go wild and break the 10 commandments as we please. Rather, we are unable to keep them perfectly. If we keep the first - thou shalt have no other gods before me - then we wouldn't have to worry about the other 9. But, as it is, we still struggle with the first.

Do you deny that Paul calls homosexuality a sin? Show me where in the 10 commandments it says such a thing. The only real place it states it is in Levitican law, where it also states you can sell your daughter into slavery. If Paul had stuck to what Christ taught, I'd be fine with him. Instead, he brings forward Jewish laws and condemns a whole group of people for who they love.

Les have you considered that God in his omnipitance may not want you to know too much about what's going on? I mean have you thought he may have simply left you out of the loop? Possibly some transgression early in life. Why dosn't he like you?

I had bad feelings about Paul at one time but lately I'm inclined to read more from him cuz I haven't really found anything wrong with his philosophy, granted I have a thousand pages or so to go and I might change my mind again. Give me one fer instance about Paul that would steer me in your direction I want to see it from your perspective please.

God uses people, of course he does, what the hell else do you think he created you for, just to look at.
beaver, you asking me for a fer instance on Paul or are you asking Cliffy?

and what if the book is bogus. What God gave us is Christ. We had "the book" before Jesus was sent to us. Obviously "the book" didn't cut it. Yet, even though he sent his only Son to save us and redeem us, we continue to look at "the book" that didn't do such a great job the first time around. Stop relying on "the book" and rely on Christ.

Nope. I decided that the likelihood of there being gods and gremlins so small as to be negligible so such things as you mentioned are immaterial. :)

There's an awful lot of information carried in light, an MRI of the brain looks like deep field space photos, as above so below. So why do you feel that the super conscious cannot exist? The information to assemble trees bugs and monkeys arrives in light. So God should be light. Something makes us happen, you might have randomly happened but I had some assembly, and the batteries were added.

Gerry, Do you keep the 10 commandments? All of them, all the time? Allow me to answer, No. No you do not, nor do I. No one does. Are you thinking if you keep the 10 commandments or try to keep the 10 commandments then you are "saved"? That is not how it works. The Law (10 commandments) were given to show us our sinfulness. They show us our weakness, our nature. Once this Law weighs upon our conscience we are then overjoyed when we hear the good news of Christ. This is the grace and mercy of God - he is welcoming and loves us.

To answer your question - yes, I believe Paul calls homosexuality a sin - I have to reference it to include verses. Also, there are other Old Testament & New that state homosexuality is a sin. What is your point here? Do we have to stop sinning in order to be saved? Here is where we will find many throwing stones while living in a glass house.

Superconscious mind? I'm guessing you mean minds stronger than human minds. I can accept that possibility. I haven't seen any evidence pointing to one, though.
Personally, I came from two cells, one from my dad and one from my mum and after that I assembled myself.

This is what a friend had to say about Paul a few days ago:
Yup Paul was a schmuck. Had great guilt for being a murderer and had a psychotic episode of sorts. Got his butt kicked good and became a fanatic to pay for all those murders.https://www.facebook.com/cliff.woff...omment_id=33349163&offset=0&total_comments=13

Jesus came to bring a new understanding of god to the Jews as they were straying too far from their own religion. I believe, from what I have read, that he was against religion, that he did not come here to start one, but Paul turned his psychotic episode, on the road to Damascus, into a religion about Jesus. I believe he completely screwed up the whole point of JC's message.

Of course I don't keep all 10 commandments all the time, and anyone that says they have and do, I would call a liar.

The fact is, Paul twisted things. He made statements as if fact when they were and are not. It is just one more example of the bible writers using it to further their own agenda.

BTW, show me which one of the 10 commandments condemns homosexuality as a sin?

Beaver, Here is a fer instance for you regarding Paul, (romans 12)
Love in Action

9 Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. 11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. 12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. 13 Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.

14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. 16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position.[c] Do not be conceited.

17 Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. 18 If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. 19 Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,”[d] says the Lord. 20 On the contrary:

“If your enemy is hungry, feed him;
if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.
In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.”[e]
21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Of course I don't keep all 10 commandments all the time, and anyone that says they have and do, I would call a liar.

The fact is, Paul twisted things. He made statements as if fact when they were and are not. It is just one more example of the bible writers using it to further their own agenda.

I first need to know why you are judging things by what the 10 commandments say.

Well the old guys I read say that the binding matter organizing force of the universe is light. Self made man eh, you created yourself from two cells with no external information at all. Very good then, nice job. I must have had help cuz I'm to lazy to have assembled myself. I was breast fed into my teens.

because THEY are God's laws. Given to Moses to be given to his children. Everything else are man's laws.

Gerry, the 10 commandments are not the only law God gave in the Old Testament. Ceremonial and Levitical Law were also given by God. I think you need to hear gospel more than law. The law is not going to save you. The law cannot save. It will only keep you in bondage. Back to my tortured analogy of a fish. Fish swim. they cannot alter their nature and one day decide to walk on land. Humans sin. We cannot alter our nature. Put down the burden and surrender. Jesus promised the Comforter - The Holy Spirit- Let him do the work. Be at peace in the salvatiion of Jesus.

The genius of analogical sense made each of the four elements in the outer world the counterpart of a corresponding psychic mode of consciousness. Earth represented sensation; water matched emotion; air symbolized thought; and fire was the universal ancient emblem of the spirit-soul. At the mere listing of the chart the mind senses a fitness, if not some phases of actual suggestions of identity, of these correspondences. Earth is appropriate to the fact of sensation, because this psychic state is generated in a body composed of earthly elements, the physical. Paul reminds us that the natural man is of the earth, earthy. And how kindred seem emotion and water! Both are lightly mobile, fluid, unstable and readily changeable, shimmering at every turn of sun or wind. Likewise how close in affinity are air and thought! Both are invisible, yet alike they reveal their character by what they affect outwardly. It is a testimony to the reality of this correspondence between air and mind that virtually every people in the world, in casting about for words suitable to convey the idea of mind-soul-spirit, has simply appropriated for this concept the words for air, wind or breath. Mind and air are definite poetical counterparts of each other. Then fire; universally this chemical phenomenon, subsisting on air and some more subtly potent elements above it, gave man his most realistic conception of the fiery nature of the creative energy. "Spirit" is itself from the Latin spiro, I breathe. The breath keeps the fires of life burning. The Greek has it as pneuma, which again means "breath." To deeper reflection, the energy of life creative assumes the concept of a fiery potency, both able to build up and to dissolve. The light of the sun, naturally conceived to be the fiery energy of the creative power, was antiquity’s universal symbol for the life-giving power of the Logos. It was the great god Re in Egypt, whose hieroglyph is the sun. Expressing a recondite item of ancient esoteric knowledge, and one which modern science seems to be on the point of confirming, stands the statement of the Greek Neoplatonist Proclus: The light of the sun is the pure energy of intellect. Not man’s intellect, to be sure, but God’s, of which man’s is a miniature and potential copy.
This is verily a concept to stop one’s breath with its astounding significance: the suns in infinite space would then be the glowing fiery brain cells of God’s mind. When God said "Let there be light!," he carried out the command by the exertion of his mind. The light of the universe has been generated by the thinking process of the cosmic mind! Even at the human level, it is a fact that the act of steady thinking generates in the brain a quantum of heat and light, measurable by delicate electrical apparatus. Thought is known to be a product of the flash of electricity from one brain cell to another oppositely charged quite analogous to the lightning in a thunder-storm.
It is not surprising, then, that we find the so-called "Fire Philosophers" of the Medieval period expounding the theory that "every man has a little sun
