Besides, the Marines are reputedly a good force, but there are others better.

The British Royal Marines.

And even General Douglas MacArthur was disgusted at the fact that ANZACs out-performed his Marines in the Pacific. (according to William Manchester.......in Douglas MacArthur, An American Caesar.....Manchester was a Marine at Guadalcanal too)

BTW, my late great-uncle Al joined the Marines in 1937, which he called "the epitome of bad timing"....he was with the First Marine Division at Guadalcanal.......as in the current HBO series The Pacific....

Now I'm in for it!!! :)

You watching the the Pacific?

Great stuff eh?

So far I am enjoying it as much as Band of Brothers.

Not from me Colpy. I personally have nothing but the utmost respect for the British Royal Marines, they are good. Did they highlight your great uncle in Pacific?

What I especially like is the detail to what weapons were used on Guadalcanal as to what they are leaving Australia with. Pacific is Great stuff.

Uncle Al was a cook........he only told two stories about Guadalcanal....once they were over run and he had to grab his Thompson and shoot his way out.......and once they threw them into the line against last ditch attacks by the Japanese......and there he stayed until the Army took over.

they mentioned both things in the HBO series......but not Al personally... :)

Correct me if I'm wrong....did The Pacific show the Marines with Garands in Part one????? (that would be incorrect) I thought they did, and then in Part Two they suddenly all had '06 Springfields and were lusting over the Garands of the Army (which would be accurate!)

That actually makes it inefficient.

You're going to have to explain that comment to me. Ask the Iraqis and Taliban about how they feel about having to fight against GPS guided bombs, Predator drones, and soldiers armed with the latest in hi tech gear.

Then ask the guy (guy being a generic term) who had his leg mangled by one coffee can, one grenade and a handful of stones.

I put my vote in for Canada since it took a Canadian to Command a USN ship's company which I was awarded the Highest Order of the United States Legion of Merit award. :)

The Legion of Merit is a military decoration of the United States armed forces that is awarded for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services and achievements. The decoration is issued both to United States military personnel and to military and political figures of foreign governments. The Legion of Merit is one of only two United States military decorations to be issued as a neck order (the other being the Medal of Honor). courtesy: Wikipedia

They were using the old pineapple grenades in the Guadalcanal episode as well as the Springfield's. The grenades were in service from 1918-1960's from WW-I as were the rifles. They were fighting with their grandfathers weapons. When I first went in (1957) we were issued M-1 Garands. We also trained with the Mk 2 pineapple grenade.

Now one thing that has been mentioned only lightly is the close air support given by Marine pilots to their ground personnel. No other country has that capability or expertise to get down that low giving close air support. The U.S. Marine Corps uses planes just as anyone else uses their rifle.

Yes. Those extremely noisey Marine Harriers are quite deadly.

One missing factor in the original query was the two descriptives of military......there are two or even three if you include research and product development - but the primary acts of a military force are two....some of the nations discussed have excellent home military for protection of the nation but
have never participated in international need of war - only peacekeeping.

Protection and National Defense
OR
International Assistance.

I agree, it's one of those things that you are supposed to know but are never told.

Too bad most soldiers don't know that... They think it's a free will license to kill. Too bad most forget what their main job is most the time because they are so caught up in glory for their country.

Auctually, I don't think they are even told what their job discription is except for kill and defend. Shame.

But I am refering to the grunts, higher command knows better.

Hmmm, I can still see the look on that Aussie NCO's face as he regaled us with the story of an Aussie Squad, removing a Platoon of Marines from their own mess hall, in Nam.

I am, well done so far.

And lets not forget the creeping barrage, and who perfected it...;-)

Don't laugh, it's an important strategic vessel with a crutial role in U.S. National Defense.

Ok. I give up... It's just a Destroyer tender supply ship called the Cape Cod. Don't mind us...
