Richard Falk lambasted by Canada for comments on Boston bombings | Canada | News | National Post

OTTAWA — Canada slammed a top United Nations official Wednesday for suggesting the Boston Marathon attacks were the result of the United States “global domination project” and Washington’s policy on Israel.

Richard Falk, the UN special rapporteur on human rights in the Palestinian territories, made the controversial remarks in an April 21 commentary published in Foreign Policy Journal.

“The American global domination project is bound to generate all kinds of resistance in the post-colonial world,” wrote Falk.

“As long as Tel Aviv has the compliant ear of the American political establishment, those who wish for peace and justice in the world should not rest easy.”

Falk also wrote that U.S. President Barack Obama hasn’t adopted a “more balanced approach to the Palestine/Israel impasse.” Instead, Falk accused Obama of “succumbing to the Beltway ethos of Israel first.”

Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird condemned Falk’s comments and called on the United Nations Human Rights Council to “immediately” remove Falk from his position.

“Once again, United Nations official Richard Falk has spewed more mean-spirited, anti-Semitic rhetoric, this time blaming the attacks in Boston on President Obama and the State of Israel,” Baird said in a statement.

“The United Nations should be ashamed to even be associated with such an individual.

The UN can be a great org but it is filled with corruption. the UN HRC is filled with countries that murder and are gross violators of basic Human Rights. Look at the list- see how it is divided by region - Should a Human Rights record be at least passable before sitting on such an Org?

I'm of two minds.

Any one of us, in our lifetimes, has given people excuses (yes, excuses, not reasons) to attack us, hurt us, victimize us.

That does not make it our 'fault', any moreso than a terrorist attack on the US by citizens is their 'fault'.

But.

When talking about strife in the Middle East, I don't see this same level of 'watch what the hell you say and how you say it', when discussing terrorism, civil war, death, and chaos. Part of me really can't help but think there's a certain amount of double standard at play, demanding that people *****foot around any form of discussion pertaining to terrorism in the US.

gawd damn censor bot. pu ssy.

Of course there's a double standard. To put it very simply, it's just Home Team vs Visitors. Even the most rational, objective individual can't help but root for the home team. The ones that don't are anarchists, not 'one of us'.

It's especially difficult to maintain any semblance of objectivity when things are still so fresh and raw.

It also doesn't help that the statements that get made aren't "Let's look at both sides of the issue", they are more along the lines of categorical assertions that "this is how they're wrong". It's not surprising that it doesn't get a very favourable reaction.
