Grain sowing campaign launched in Ukraine

Ukraine's Ministry for Development of Economy, Trade and Agriculture says as of April 1, Ukrainian agrarians launched a campaign to sow spring crops in 16 regions, except for Dnipropetrovsk, Zhytomyr, Lviv, Sumy, Ternopil, Kharkiv, Cherkasy, and Chernihiv regions.

In particular, wheat was sown on 13,580 ha (8% of the target), barley on 226,110 ha (16% of the target), oats on 5,710 ha (3% of the target), and peas on 65,160 ha (28% of the target).
Zaporizhia, Odesa, and Mykolaiv regions were in the lead during the sowing campaign, having planted spring grain and leguminous crops on 59,400 ha, 50,300 ha, and 34,240 ha, respectively.

Background​

Ukraine's Ministry for Development of Economy, Trade and Agriculture says the harvest of grain crops in Ukraine in 2021 may reach a record high figure posted in 2019, that is 75 million tonnes.

Death pits with thousands of NKVD victims found in Odessa

One of the largest mass burials in Ukraine was found in Odessa in the south of the country, the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance (UINM) reported. The victims were shot by the NKVD.

After work was carried out in only one of the former NKVD special facility “Tatarka” sectors, at least 29 graves were found (as of August 23). According to the UINM press release, these are the pits where the executed inhabitants of Odessa, victims of communist terror, were buried.

The Ukrainian editorial office of Radio Swoboda emphasised that most likely up to 8,000 Poles, Ukrainians, Russians, Germans, Moldovans, and representatives of other nations were shot there.

The graves are currently being located with the number of victims of repression not listed. However, it can already be said that this facility is one of the largest in Ukraine.

According to the Ukrinform agency, a group of volunteers found the first six graves on the premises of this facility at the beginning of August. A further 23 graves were discovered later.

The NKVD was originally Established in 1917 tasked with regular police work and overseeing the prisons and labour camps later on it was transformed into a kind of secret police also conducting ordinary public order activities. It is mostly known for carrying out mass executions on political prisoners.

Hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians were imprisoned or executed in Gulag camps during Joseph Stalin’s era in the 1930s.


New Delhi: Senior Congress MLA VD Satheesan has said that CPI(M) leaders in Kerala should remove the portraits of Joseph Stalin from their party offices and other places. His statement came after the remains of thousands of people believed to be victims of the Soviet dictator’s Terror were unearthed in Ukraine’s southern city of Odessa.

The bones of 5000-8000 people were found in over two dozen graves, making it one of the largest mass graves unearthed in Ukraine so far.
