There is vast differences between the two countries, cultures, people, speech, and beliefs.

Vast!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Subtle is more the word I would pick, I don't know much about cultures (not being cultured myself), but the people are almost identical, the speech is very similar and virtually the same as ours in the northern states and their beliefs are almost identical- Christianity is the religion of the majority and we all believe in the basic beliefs- speech, worship, assembly, movement etc.

Canadians define themselves in terms of not being American. They are forever looking for elements that separate themselves from their southern neighbours. In someways that makes us a country searching for an identity. I don't think it's true that we are 'nicer' or 'less assertive'.. but there are distinctive characteristics that are associated with cold weather climates. So you see more correspondence to the Northern U.S. than southern.

Americans as a group, consider themselves to have a divine and global mandate to evangelize the world to their concept of liberty, which they define as much by libertarian capitalism as by the declaration of rights. Property is as important as life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness to them. I don't know how many American movies i've seen where the climaxe is the hero standing victorious in the midst of a cheering crowd; That's the way Americans view their mission in the world, as a conquering hero, its engrained on their society.

That gives a ruthless character to their society, and an arrogance as well. They tend to amazingly ignorant of things beyond there borders, have little appreciation of foreign cultures. Most of them would be unable to find Afghanistan on a map, even though they have an army fighting there. But they do tend to see fights through to the finish, and have managed, better than other Western countries to not submerge itself in the post structural ethos that is burying the rest of the West.

To put the difference into terms everyone should be able to understand just think Cougar vs. Mountain Lion.

Yankees are warmongers, Canadians peace loving. Yanks are like lemmings following their leader into the sea, Canadians can think on their own. Yanks don't have a brain, while Canadians knows what is going around around them.

Comparing the USA and Canada isn't too different from comparing Australia and New Zealand. In both cases there are two neighbouring countries which are quite similar but still hold some key fundamental differences.

For example, the US and Australia are more "outgoing" nations whereas Canada and NZ tend to be more reserved, and sadly, often self defeating.

Mostly, Canada is differentiated from the US in terms of government and politics. We're generally more left than not only the US but other major English speaking nations as well (though we're closely in line with NZ in this respect). It's often said that Canada's Conservatives lie to the left of the US' Democrats.

Generally I can think of a considerable number of differences between us and the US. They're mostly and largely minor, but they all add up. I can think again of a considerable number of differences between Canada and the entire world. Where else does one order a "medium double double"?

You make as much sense as anyone Polygong. The most important similarity of Canada and the U.S. is that they are both made up of mainly nice people.

"Apparently you haven't waited outside an arena at five in the morning to get your team some ice time. NHL? That's not hockey.... That's business. Hockey is chasing a puck."

If Canadians REALLY loved hockey, we would build enough arenas so that no one would have to wait at five AM for ice time.

I ignore your first sentence since personal insults don't bother me.

TRUE love of hockey would manage to come up with MONEY to build enough arenas, if cheapness wasn't in your blood.

"Who is being insulting?"

Since I have no idea what "Partzheimers" is, and you are opposing my views, I must assume that that you are implying that I suffer from something similar to Alzheimers.

Wouldn't you take that as insulting?

What's your skin made out of? Onion skin paper? Even I get "Partzheimers" at times, it's the tamer brother of Alzheimers- also known as C.R.S.

JLM, I get attacked by so many, so often that, excuse me, I developed a thin skin.

Luckily, I have a broad and understanding mind, so I rarely allow myself to be insulted.

I still don't know what Partzheimer is and you you go and add another mystery:

What is C.R.S.????

Yukon Jack- I don't mean to insult anyone unless they start it. As you are probably aware some of us do a lot of joking on here mainly harmless. "Partzheimers" is a term I borrrowed from Cliff, probably his interpretation of Alzheimers but a milder form (just in fun of course). C.R.S. is the same sort of thing - it stands for CAN'T REMEMBER SH*T. You have to roll with the punches there Yukon Jack. You also have to remember there is an exception to every rule.

You think Faux is great because it is more popular than CNN. How come you don't subscribe to the same thinking when it comes to your opinions?

Hey Cannuck - Who cares what channel a guy watches? If he watched Donald Duck hour it wouldn't bother me any, why you?

Beautifully said, thank you and I agree that OZ and NZ are similar in many ways and vastly different in others. Kiwis' are no where near as laid back and it's easier for a Kiwi to get a job in OZ because we're known to be hard workers and not lazy buggas'.

Kiwi men treat their women better too where as the Aussie blokes are a little "have the wee woman under the thumb" mentality. This I have noticed in Melbourne, Brisbane and Queensland in general. Woman also rate second when job hunting. NZ really pushes equality and it's a stance I admire about our country and NZ women are fiercely independent. Yeah those are a vast differences (lol) but I get your drift...
