Cut US military spend by 50%, then you would be talking turkey. That should cut the deficit right smartly. Give the rest of the world a break from all the killing and maiming. Haliburton won't be happy and Dr. Strangelove (Cheney) would probably have another stroke, but who cares?

In a sensible budget balancing package, nothing should be off the table. There must be spending cuts everywhere, including defense. There should be tax increases for everybody, each according to his ability.

But as I have said it many times before, the will to balance the budget does not exist in USA. Since people are not interested in it, neither of the two political parties are interested in it either.

I think USA has to hit bottom like Greece did, before it takes any austerity measures. Once the nation is facing bankruptcy, is about to default on its obligations, has bond rating downgraded by rating agencies, then politicians will make tough choices, regardless of the election consequences (like they did in Greece).

  1. often Fascism
  2. A system of government marked by centralization of authority under a dictator, stringent socioeconomic controls, suppression of the opposition through terror and censorship, and typically a policy of belligerent nationalism and racism.
  3. A political philosophy or movement based on or advocating such a system of government.
  4. Oppressive, dictatorial control.
Yup that is true also, Obama is trying for a number #4 now.

So are you saying that junior bush is a fascist?
Seems like most of the republican party is.

Nope, just what it says "Obama is trying for a number #4 now."
#4 Oppressive, dictatorial control.

Sort of the kind of guy you seem to gravitate to.

Actually Cheney more closely resembles Buck Turgidson than Strangelove; along with a good dose of Bella Lugosi.

Liberals wish that the dollar would weaken, but that looks like it will not happen in this century, with the dollar getting stronger everyday.
Euro heads for parity with dollar

Single currency set for long-term slide, sparking fears for Britain’s export-led economic recovery

THE euro is set to slide further and could be heading for parity with the dollar, analysts say. The single currency’s weakness and mounting fears over Europe’s recovery prospects could hit growth in Britain.
The euro fell to a 19-month low against the dollar of $1.23 on Friday night, amid fears that the austerity measures countries need to adopt to satisfy the EU authorities and the International Monetary Fund could tip them back into recession. Sterling ended the week up against the euro at €1.18, but down against the dollar at $1.45.
Olli Rehn, Europe’s economic and monetary affairs commissioner, stoked fears about the pain ahead for Europe when he said yesterday that the €750 billion (£638 billion) crisis mechanism agreed last week should be made so unattractive that countries will not want to use it.

Republicans calling Obama Fascist is hysterical. After 8 years of Bush, Dr Strangelove and the Patriot Act, Obama looks like Winnie the Poo.

Economists are changing their tune on the value of the dollar, used to be thought that a weak dollar was a good thing, now they are saying a strong dollar is no longer a bad thing. I guess to the average Joe Blow on the street it doesn't make much difference.

Do you see Obama dumping the Patriot Act, no, he likes it and the power it gives him. I have not seen the U.S. in such a vulnerable position in this world since Obama became President. The man is just incapable of doing anything without his teleprompter and his radical buddies. I know Bush had his wackos also, but we knew where we stood with him. Just do not trust Obama and what his plans for America are. The U.S. even with Obama is still the greatest country in the world. Liberals would like to break that thought, but they won't.

The rest of the world would like that. We don't need a sandbox bully. Americans have a Hollywood view of themselves but the rest of the world aren't wearing rose coloured glasses.

To us it makes no difference, atleast at this stage of (don't know what to call it, it is not inflation). With all the fluctuating prices (except for gas) cost of living pretty much stayed the same. Nope, as for average Joe Blow all this didn't make a difference as long as he had a job.

Don't have to go that far back, just look what the Liberals have spent since coming into power.

And what did Pelosi give us? Take a look! $300 million for contraceptives! $50 million for the National Endowment of the Arts! $400 million for global warming research! $2.4 billion for “carbon-capture demonstration products”! $81 billion for medicaid, $20 billion for food stamps, and $83 billion in tax-credits for people who didn’t pay taxes.
These are all worthwhile causes, BUT THEY WILL NOT CREATE JOBS! They do NOT belong in a stimulus bill.
Pelosi knows this– but this is her chance for payback. The Democrats were harassed and marginalized under Bush, and Pelosi wants them to pay. You can make the case that the GOP deserves it– but that’s not the point. The point is that our economy is at the brink of collapse and THIS IS NOT THE TIME FOR POLITICAL REVENGE! Grow up, Nancy Pelosi! Follow your President’s lead. Work with the Republicans and DO WHAT’S BEST FOR THE COUNTRY!

You know Obama just signed health care reform that is going to give insurance to 30 million uninsured people, I hope. That segment of the U.S. population is exceedingly less vulnerable.

The stimulus package, if not the best for the country, is pretty close to it. Independent economists agree that this particular act saved/created an impressive number of U.S. jobs so far. These economists arrive at this number by (1) looking at real employment data since the act was signed; (2) looking at an estimation of what that data would've been without the act; and (3) compare the two.

Some analysis of how many more jobs the U.S. has now that it wouldn't have if the stimulus was never enacted, up til the end of 2009:

Congressional Budget Office: Between 800,000 jobs and 2.4 million jobs.

IHS/Global Insight: 1.25 million jobs.

Macroeconomic Advisers: 1.06 million jobs.

Moody's Economy: 1.59 million jobs.

When you count the first quarter of 2010, these numbers go higher, and will go higher for the forseeable future. The spending in the stimulus was intended to last years after all.
