Explorer Paul Rose's journey along the Pennine Way takes him to the Yorkshire Dales. Fifty years ago, the Pennine Way was launched in the Dales village of Malham. Paul returns to hear from those who remember

Secrets of Great British Castles

Episode 3

Warwick Castle

Today Warwick Castle is a popular tourist attraction packed full of fun family activites for 364 days of the year, but for centuries its walls echoed with the sounds of betrayal, bloodshed, murder and financial ruin. Dan Jones reveals the turbulent history which took place within the well-preserved walls of this imposing castle and the tales of the earls of Warwick who lived there.

Walt Disney's ancestor, Edward Disney, fought for the Royalists during the English Civil War and was captured by the Parliamentarians after the Battle of Edgehill and imprisoned in Warwick Castle.
The distant relative of Walt made this graffiti whilst awaiting execution in the castle’s Guy Tower but because he was a wealthy noble he narrowly avoided being beheaded.

Watched Fox News Sunday. Have no idea why. You have the interviewer who doesn't interview anyone he interrogates them. Like a grand inquisitor. Then you have the interviewees. Always on the defensive trying as best they can to not say something that will incriminate them in any way. It's pretty annoying and don't ask me why I watch that now and then.

it's because it's interesting to watch people having meaningless dialogue which still others believe to be true and would defend with their life

many of them hang out here and as the years go by, make less and less sense

quite intriguing actually

earlier today I attended our neighborhood high school baseball game - they lost 30-0

game was called after three innings & was utterly pathetic - I don't think they gave up so much as one earned run since they made error after error

somehow, a couple of girls from the softball team stayed for the entire game and kept trying to encourage their mates but it was useless - I also stayed but that's cause I had nothing better to do

In the last episode of this series of Secret Britain, Adam and Ellie explore the highlands of Scotland.

A vast wilderness (the Highlands council area is the size of Belgium) which is home to some of Britain's biggest lakes and tallest mountains, the area is the most sparsely populated region in Europe.

In this episode, Adam climbs Britain's tallest mountain and Ellie goes visits a loch which supposedly houses a monster (no, it's NOT Loch Ness).

Secret Britain

Episode 3

Hidden Highlands of Scotland

The final episode of this series sees Ellie Harrison and Adam Henson explore the hidden highlands of Scotland. Inspired by suggestions from viewers of Countryfile, Adam and Ellie meet people living in Britain's countryside who have extraordinary stories and stunning sights to share. The pair also reveal some secrets of their own.

Adam climbs the fearsome, secret side of the UK's highest mountain, Ben Nevis (above), the north face, a spectacular rock ascent onto which few tourists venture. Adam joins a mountain guide to tackle this hidden route to the summit, but the route is far from the only secret they find along the way. Adam also discovers the ruins of a remarkable abandoned weather station.

Is Morag the monster lurking in the depths of Britain's deepest lake, Loch Morar?

Ellie probes a monster mystery at the heart of Britain's deepest water, Loch Morar, the secret sister of the world-famous Loch Ness. The stunningly beautiful Loch Morar is so deep that it could even hide the Eiffel Tower, but Ellie meets locals who believe the water actually conceals a monster, known as Morag.

The most extraordinary map of Scotland is also revealed, overgrown and hidden in the landscape. It's the world's largest topographical map but how did it come into being and why was it lost for decades?

In the heart of the Highlands, Adam is delighted to discover a cattle ranch that allows him to live out a boyhood dream; while on the Black Isle Ellie visits the mysterious Clootie Well. It's been a shrine to healing since Celtic times, but why are its ancient rituals still popular today?

Together Ellie and Adam also go hunting for Bonnie Prince Charlie's secret hideaway, a tiny but timeless cave in the very same landscape where commando warfare was invented during the Second World War. And they conclude their journey of discovery with a magical ride on the real Hogwarts Express.

The Channel 5 series The Last Days Of...., depicting the last days of famous historical figures, continues with Charles I

The Last Days of Charles I

Parliament and the monarchy fought a bloody conflict between 1642 and 1651

This week's subject is Charles I.

On the 30th January 1649, during the English Civil War which had left 200,000 people dead, King Charles I, a devout adherent to the divine right of kings, lost his head after his Royalists were defeated by Oliver Cromwell's Parliamentary forces. For the following 11 years, England, Scotland and Ireland were republics.

Writer Mark Gatiss, academic Hannah Dawson and human rights barrister Geoffrey Robertson are among the experts who give their views on this most controversial of battles between the monarchy and parliament.

In one of the most momentous and shocking acts in British history, King Charles I was beheaded outside Whitehall Palace's Banqueting House on 30th January 1649 in front of a shocked crowd

Secrets of Great British Castles

Episode 4: Caernarfon Castle

The mighty and impenetrable Caernarfon Castle in North Wales was built by England's King Edward I to show the locals who's boss, a symbol of English rule

Historian Dan Jones explores the turbulent history of one of Britain's most famous castles, Caernarfon. Dan is in the heart of Snowdonia exploring a stronghold built not only as an impenetrable fortress - just 28 English soldiers in the castle managed to defeat a large Franco-Welsh army laying siege to it in 1403 - but also as a lavish royal palace fit for a fairytale - Caernarfon Castle
.
