24 Hours in the Past

Episode 1 (of 4)

Six celebs find out what it was like to live in 1840s Britain

Six celebrities travel back in time to the relentless graft of Victorian Britain, spending four days in four different 19th-century workplaces.

Their first 24 hours lands them in the filth and grime of the city dump - the dustyard. Victorian Britain may have been the richest country in the world, but poverty and filth are everywhere. In the dustyard they must sift through mountains of dirt, rotting vegetables and old bones. With thousands of people flooding into cities to find work in the new factories, there is a whole lot of horse manure and human effluent to clean up.

The new recruits are actress Zoe Lucker, former Shadow Home Secretary and Conservative MP Anne Widdecombe, impressionist Alistair McGowan, world champion hurdler Colin Jackson, Outnumbered's Tyger Drew-Honey and presenter Miquita Oliver.

Who will conquer the 19th century and discover their inner Victorian? Presenter Fi Glover and historian Ruth Goodman help drive them through the age that laid the foundation for modern Britain.

Driving Mrs. Daisy. The story of a friendship between an elderly chauffeur and the wealthy Lady he drives for. Morgan Freeman, Jessica Tandy and Dan Aykroid.

I also liked that movie because the characters seemed very real. So rare to find movies that portray genuine people that a viewer can readily relate to.

I may see if I can find the movie Stanley and Iris. I think I can watch it on youtube. It's the story about an illiterate man, Stanley, played by Robert Denero, and Iris the woman played by Jane Fonda who teaches him to read. A good human interest story .One of my favorites.

Stanley was a gifted machinist but could not accomplish a damn thing until Iris taught him to read. I guess the moral of this story could be applied to many things. I like Iris.

I think I watched that years ago, an excellent flick as I recall.

The Pennine Way

Episode 4

It may look vast, but just one small part of Vindolanda Roman fort has so far been excavated

The wilderness of rural Northumberland, England's most northerly and most sparsely populated county, and the English-Scottish border await explorer Paul Rose on the last stage of his Pennine Way journey.

As the route celebrates its 50th birthday, Paul makes a remarkable discovery at the Roman archaeological dig at Vindolanda Roman fort.

He also finds out what lies beyond the red flags while on exercise with the Grenadier Guards - and why Pennine Way walkers can have a magical experience in the dark skies capital of Europe.

A matter of taste I guess. If you've lived in the desert most of your life and Southern New Mexico is high desert you might appreciate something else. The pictures I've seen of Scotland shows one of the prettiest places I've ever seen. Now I will say one time I was driving through a rain storm on I 40 just west of Albuquerque and the sun peaked through and saw the most amazing multiple rainbows. I guess nice scenery is also in the eye of the beholder.
