Series 24

Episode 1

Matt LeBlanc, Chris Harris and Rory Reid return for the 24th series of Top Gear. This week features the astonishing, ultra-exclusive Ferrari FXXK, tested to the max by Chris Harris at the Daytona circuit in Florida. Matt, Chris and Rory then race across the vast wilderness of Kazakhstan in three high-mileage cars: a Mercedes saloon, a Volvo estate and a London taxi, all of which have done at least 480,000 miles, the equivalent distance of going to the moon and back. Their task is to get to the Baikonur Cosmodrome, from where the Soviets launched the first satellie, Sputnik 1. Actor James McAvoy guest stars in the studio and on the famous Top Gear test track.

1066: A Year to Conquer England

Episode 1

In this three-part drama documentary series, historian Dan Snow explores the political intrigues and family betrayals between Vikings, Anglo-Saxons and Normans that led to war and the Battle of Hastings.

When King Edward the Confessor dies without an heir, it triggers a bitter race to succeed him as King of England. Earl Harold is on the spot and takes the crown. But in Normandy, Duke William believes the throne has been promised to him and decides to invade. Meanwhile, in Norway, the Viking king Harald Hardrada also fancies himself as King of England, and he too puts together an invasion force. Very soon, England will be under attack.

He's on vacation so his usual pro Israel, anti Palestinian bias isn't a factor in this week's programming. Just straight forward discussion with both sides of the issue well presented.

This Country

New six-part BBC comedy mockumentary exploring the lives of young people in modern rural Britain, focusing on cousins Kerry and Kurtan and their lives in the Cotswolds and written by and starring brother and sister Daisy May Cooper and Charlie Cooper.

Daisy May and Charlie play Kerry and Lee "Kurtan" Mucklowe, a pair of track-suited cousins washing about, bored to tears, in a fictional, dead-end Cotswolds village.

Based on Cirencester in Gloucestershire where Daisy May and Charlie grew up, it is the sort of place where so little happens that a scarecrow-making competition becomes one of the highlights of the year.

The tedium and the stifling lack of opportunity forces the characters, who are supposedly being filmed for a documentary exploring why young people in rural Britain "feel more marginalised than ever", to create their own daily dramas and myths. It is, by some distance, the funniest thing on television at the moment.

Here are some clips:

Turkey with Simon Reeve

Episode 1: Gallipoli to the Syrian Border

Simon Reeve sets off on the first leg of his two-part journey around Turkey, a dramatic and beautiful country that now finds itself at the centre of world events.

In this programme, he visits Istanbul and the beaches and crystal clear waters of the Aegean Sea, before ending up at the war-torn border with Syria.

In the region thought to have been the origin of the first vineyards, Simon meets a producer now trying to sell wine in a Muslim country with an increasingly conservative government.

In Istanbul, he meets some of the people shaping modern Turkey, from loyal supporters of the nation's controversial and authoritarian president to the master builder constructing one of the world's largest mosques and the notorious billionaire cashing in on a Turkish property boom.

Along Turkey's famous Turquoise Coast, Simon has a taste of luxury at the country's most expensive hotel, but discovers an industry on its knees as war in Syria and deadly terror attacks keep millions of holidaymakers away. Only one sector is bucking the trend - halal-friendly tourism.

Finally, Simon reaches Turkey's southern border where state-of-the-art camps have been built for hundreds of thousands of refugees fleeing the conflict in Syria. Many are trying to carve out a new life in Turkey, and some are even learning Turkish, but the nearby thud of artillery and rockets is a constant reminder of the war just a few miles away.
