I don't know if I could pinpoint Canada's biggest problem, but for me it is the need to manipulate perception. Our politicians have handlers to guide them in how to speak. We suppress free speech and punish honesty rather than state the obvious.

You don't have to explain it to me. You have to convince people that they are better off paying more for food and to forget the lessons learned in WWII
Compared to the late 1950's food has droppped from 60% of income to 10-15% of income.

Socialized farming is wonderful.

Who want's to stop farm tax credits? Can it continue?

Canada's problems in order of importance:

1. Immigration - too many and poor quality, i.e., uneducated and from stoneage cultures who don't obey laws and could care less about how to live as a good Canadian citizen. Send them back from whence they came and in future, keep these useless people out of Canada. We need 'Makers', not 'Takers'! Those who cannot pass an 8th grade equivalency test in English or French should never be granted Canadaian Citizenship.

2. Crime - serious crime like assaults and murder are way out of control. Much of it perpetrated by those described in #1 above.

3. Illegal Drugs - Way out of control. Hand-slap penalties handed down by our WIMPY, Revolving Door Justice System does nothing to deter the proliferation of illegal drugs.

4. Environment - Stop the importation and sale of all the cheap plastic crap from China et al. The Federal Government should pass and enforce rigid quality standards for all products manufactured or imported into Canada. This will keep our landfills and urban streets from being filled up with the crap that is used once or twice and then discarded and would also create more jobs in Canada & USA where we know how to produce quality items.

5. Healthcare - Way too much abuse of the Health Care System. Hospital Emergency Rooms are filled with drunks, drug abusers and immigrants, who for whatever reason seem to need four or more family members to accompany them to the ER and many times they are there with problems that could easily wait a day or two until they could get into see their Family Doctor. Another reason I hear about is that if you go to the Hospital Emergency and the attending Physician gives you a prescription, the Hospital Dispensary fills it at no charge to you. We need 'Makers' not 'Takers'. Government paid medical services should only be provided to patients who can function in English or French.

6. Unemployment - there are jobs going unfilled by Canadian residents because they won't do the work called for. I recall a few years back an Okanagan orchard owner who couldn't get help to pick his crops who went into downtown Kelowna with a sign saying he had jobs available picking fruit. The many young people standing around on the sidewalks and in the park just laughed and ridiculed the man. People receiving government paid unemployment benefits should be made to take available work of lose their benefits.

7. Homeless - Most of this is the result of some of the above. Illiteracy, consumption of illegal drugs, stupidity and the attitude that the Canadian Taxpayers owe you a living regardless of how much of a screwup you are.

That's all for today! Hope I haven't upset too many of the 'entitled' members of our society.

And while you're at it, Canadians who cannot pass these tets should be shot.
2. Crime - serious crime like assaults and murder are way out of control. Much of it perpetrated by those described in #1 above.
What you say may be true in some cities, but most assaults and murders are 'home grown'
3. Illegal Drugs
Not much of a problem in reality, but we like to blow it out of proportion.
4. Environment
It's not as much of an issue as some try to make it out to be.
5. Healthcare
We all look upon healthcare as 'free', and therefore don't value it.
6. Unemployment - there are jobs going unfilled by Canadian residents because they won't do the work called for.
Absolutely correct. In my office, it's next to impossible to find anyone interested or capable of doing anything.
7. Homeless
Most of the homeless are people with mental illnesses, who would have been taken care of years ago.

Unless of course it's a problem that's directly affected you.

Like what, being scared by an immigrant who looks different, sounds different, and smells different?

Shades of the 1870s and the Irish, don't you think?

More like the ones (the minority) that pack knives and guns, sell dope and do drive bys and fence stolen merchandise and rape and kill your daughters.....................never realized the Irish did that in the 1870s.

I'm not sure about the dope and drive bys, but the rest, well, I'd suggest you do some research.

1. No prayer in schools
2. No elected Senate
3. No elected Supreme Court

I'd say 2 out of 3 of those is a great thing. Prayer in school is a waste of time that could be spent learning, and politicizing the Supreme Court is just dangerous.

Our biggest problem is debt and the deficits followed by health care, unemployment and the environment.

You are certainly wrong about this one. Crime by immigrants generally ranks lower than that of the non-immigrant population. In fact your entire anti-immigrant tone borders on the usual racist hysteria generated by other generations of xenophobes. I won't disagree that your other points are problems although they might not be on my top five list of the most serious problems.

Arrival of the Fittest: Canada

After several months of posting in this thread I note that no one has included what I consider two serious problems. One is the inordinate amount of foreign ownership in Canada. Few people seem to realize that about 25% of Canadian businesses are foreign owned. This has the effect of draining huge amount of cash from the country each year to foreign shareholders as well as crippling the efforts of smaller Canadian companies to complete. It also means that Canada lags in R&D as most of that is carried out in the host nation of the foreign companies.

Another problem is the tremendous amount of inequity in income distribution in Canada, which results in a very small minority receiving huge salaries while most Canadians struggle to get by. It has not quite yet reached the level of inequality that exists in the US thanks to Canada's stronger labour laws, but it is quickly catching up. This results in a middle class and lower middle class that is forced deeply into debt in order to maintain a half decent standard of living. It is also the probable explanation for the large number of young people who have decided to continue living with their parents rather than getting out on their own as was the pattern with previous generations.

The poblem that bothers me most is the situation of our Native peoples...most lack potable drinking water, live in mould-infested,inadequate housing, receive a sub par education in substandard school buildings...and yet,our federal government spends many, many millions on foreign aid, overseen by questionable regimes.
The social problems of our Native peoples are not being addressed and the very high number of child and teenage suicides should be a national embarassment.
