I dont care about my future. My time is almost up. But I do fear for the future generations who have to deal with our stupidity. Business as usual is a death knell for the planet. It is attitudes like yours and others here that cause that fear. At the rate we are consuming this planet, there is not going to be a future for those born of our children. Unbridled capitalism is a cancer.

I don't feel that way at all.
Too funny Cliffy... That sentiment has been expressed in one form or another for as long as human's have existed on this planet. Let's face facts, just about every form of life on this planet is 'parasitic' in one form or another on ole mother Gaia, everything (almost) needs to consume something in order to survive and it all begins with consumption of an inanimate resource.
I especially love the comment regarding "attitudes like yours and others here" as it bends over backwards to absolve people like yourself that believe that you have little impact or are helping the planet by pointing the finger at others. As it stands, you consume electricity to operate your computer (packed-full of heavy metals and other components that were unceremoniously ripped from Gaia by the way), drive your car to the store on which you rely to feed/clothe yourself.
It's simple hypocrisy Cliffy.. You really need to get over yourself and if for some reason you can't, start in your own backyard and lead by example.

We're not talking about consumption for survival. The needless, endless and meaningless consumption of minerals solely so we can continue to feed our desire of abhorrent material wealth.
The needless killing or torturing of animals into extinction for profit, again to feed our material wealth.
Our desire to extract oil any means necessary, even if it means poisoning the water supplies or cause earthquakes.
This is all entirely unsustainable of course, and will lead to our inevitable demise.

I would worry more about Nuclear Terrorism than climate change. It alone is more likely within the next 5 years than anything else, and with it comes global food shortages, contamination of water, faster destabilization of the economic systems of the world, not to mention what would happen to energy production.

The real question is the degree of damage, and the amount of effort we need to put in to counter that affect.
One easy solution is axing the XL pipeline. That would be a move thats good for both the environment and the economy in the long term.

Well, there does seem to be a glimmer of hope on the horizon with the world economy on the virge of hitting the wall, people will not be affording to buy all the fancy sh*t they manufacture these days that ultimately adds to pollution.
It's a catch-22 JLM... Fewer gvt and investment dollars also equates to a lot less of the miracle technology that is being advertised as planet-savers. Also factor-in that people generally adopt the cheapest solutions to their problems when times are tight which doesn't necessarily translate into the 'cleanest' solution.
Maybe we have to begin by determining the validity of this "miracle technology".
