The wide-eyed pups had their chance to shine, now it's time for the big dogs to strut their stuff.

Hockey season is indeed upon us as the Vancouver Canucks veterans reported to GM Place on Friday for pre-training camp medicals and testing, it was the first mandatory day of work for the veterans and most of them are glad it's behind them.

"It was good, it's another year down and I'm glad to have it over with," said defenceman Kevin Bieksa. "It was as tough as ever."

Bieksa and company were put through the yearly motions, they lifted, they cycled, they jumped and they flexed. Impressive results were the ultimate goal, but Bieksa, who appeared in only 34 games with the Canucks last season because of injury, said everyone generally tests well, so it becomes a matter of up showing each other.

Canucks captaincy wide open

Canucks captaincy wide open

The next Canucks captain will likely be named within 10-14 days, head coach Alain Vigneault said at the start of training camp Friday.
The team has decided to take a wait-and-see approach to naming Markus Naslund's replacement and claims it hasn't made a choice.
Vigneault said the Canucks will take time during the preseason to see who emerges from a short list of candidates.
I do think we have quite a few guys who can impact the culture, and can have a really positive impact on our group," Vigneault said.
"We're going to look for probably the next 10 days to two weeks to see who wants to show the example and influence to lead their teammates in the proper way.
"We have a lot of good leaders. Players by the way they conduct themselves are going to take the room."
Vigneault and GM Mike Gillis have four undisclosed criteria they are using to find the next captain. Vigneault implied the team will not rotate captains.
"I think we'll have one captain but we'll see how things unfold," he said.
The leading candidates appear to be Mattias Ohlund and Willie Mitchell but Vigneault said the Canucks are also giving some younger players serious consideration which immediately puts Kevin Bieksa and Ryan Kesler near the top of the list.
"You guys know them as well as I do, there's quite a few guys," Vigneault said. "I don't want to get into naming names.
"Obviously, for any team to function properly you need strong leadership."

I have wondered who I would pick for captain too. It seems that Vigneault is trying to
think of someone younger than Mitchell/Ohlund. Maybe a captain for many years, so in
that case, yes, it could be Bieksa, (very mature, tough, passionate, dedicated, fearless).
I thought at first it would automatically be Sundin, but now, even if he does come to
our team, I think he has abused any idea of being captain), there are other young guys
who could rise to the occasion, even Mason Raymond, Alex Burrows, but not right now.
I love the passion of Alex Burrows, and his eagerness, and he is also fearless, I'm curious
to see how he rises to the role of a leader now on this team.

Don't know if Morrison will be playing till end of October, unless his injury is totally
ready earlier than expected. Morrison would be a good captain, but also an older
player, but good captain material, I agree.

I don't know the status of his knee...ACL..but I did run into him a couple times at the New West sports medicine clinic this summer. A hell of a nice guy...

Yeah, he's a real down to earth nice guy, and loves fishing, he has a house near Tofino, and he fishes a lot, sometimes with a fellow my daughter knows, and he really enjoys
his fishing time with Morrison, just a regular guy, no expectations at all, because of who
he is.

On Morrison’s rehab from a knee injury

We’ve looked at some medical reports. We believe he’ll be ready for training camp, but if he’s not, he’ll be ready for the season. He has to pass a physical like every free agent player, so we’re not worried about this. He’s been a very durable player through his career until the last 12 months.

He sure has, was the iron man for a long time, but I do think he played with injuries in that time period, that perhaps he should'nt have. As much as I have always like him, I don't mind that he is gone, as I would like to see the young guys we have now, take this team and make it theirs. I'm not sure exactly what happened with canuck negotiations,
perhaps he could have played here, and jumped at the offer made by Burke, he took
the offer quickly, so I think he was just making sure he had a place to play with a decent
contract, but not sure he might have got the same thing here, it just didn't happen right
away. He was injured, and had a bad couple of years, with injuries, so I'm not going to blame Gillis for not 'jumping' at the chance to sign him right away, there's a bit of a
question mark there for me.

Are we talking about the same guy?

Going into the 2007-08 season, Morrison had played five consecutive seasons without missing a game. After Colorado defenceman Karlis Skrastins was forced to miss a game with a knee injury on February 25, 2007, Morrison became the NHL's reigning ironman. Skrastins streak ended at 495 games, while Morrison, at the time, had played in his 492nd. On December 12, 2007, the ironman streak was snapped at 542 games when he decided not to play a game due to wrist complications. The streak, which had begun on February 27, 2000, with the Devils, was the eleventh longest in NHL history.[

well, don't have stats in front of me, so guess I'm forgetting, but thought he had injuries
last two seasons, and I do know he did play injured, as they mentioned it from time to
time. He definitely struggled last season, he's a bit small, and he seemed to get knocked of the puck quite a bit, had trouble on the boards with bigger players, great skater, but in the last few seasons, the league has become so fast, so many great skaters, I think
we will see that on our team this year, at least I hope so.
I see canuck games are televised monday and tuesday, sportsnet

It'll be interesting to see 'who' fits with 'who', as it is kind of confusing right now.
I wonder if Bernier will fit with the twins, and I also wonder who will fit well
with Dimitra, he is a very talented player, but needs the right linemates, and
there seems to lots of choices right now. I can see Raymond with him, but who
knows. And I wonder if Hodgson will make the team, they said he was the best
player on the ice in edmonton at the prospects game, so it will be interesting to see
him with the main team. I'm much more interested in this team, than I have been
for the last few years, I was so tired of watching Naslund look so 'sad' and 'negative',
it will be nice to have a new captain, and a new start, I don't even care if it takes two
years to put it together. Gillis has 10 million to work with, he can wheel and deal as
he needs to over this season and the next.

You probably already have this site....but if not....

http://canucks.nhl.com/

I'm on that site constantly, spend some time chatting with the air headed kids on
chat board, definitely some wierdos there, and just a few with common sense
approach to our team.

I post many of my news and other information from the canuck site, and I float around
the NHL, to other teams web sites as well.

Canadiens excited for trip to Hockeyville

Brian Compton | NHL.com Staff Writer
Sep 20, 2008, 10:00 AM EDT

Guy Carbonneau realizes that for many in attendance, this could be their one chance to see his Canadiens in person.
Roberval gets 'Hockeyville 2008' titleSome may see Tuesday's contest between the Montreal Canadiens and Buffalo Sabres as nothing more than an average preseason game, but Canadiens coach Guy Carbonneau knows it is much more than that.

An entire village soon will come together and turn Roberval, Quebec, into Hockeyville -- the annual competition sponsored by Kraft that the city on Lac Saint-Jean won earlier this year. Carbonneau, who is from Sept-Iles, Quebec, is familiar with the area and knows just how much this event will mean to a city with a population of roughly 10,000 people.

"I had the chance to play four years in Chicoutimi, which is about an hour away," Carbonneau told NHL.com. "I've never had the chance to go there too often, but I know the people there are excited. It's always been a corner of the province that really supported the Canadiens. I'm sure I'm going to have a few fans in the stands."

Roberval goes Cup crazy as former stars visit
ROBERVAL, Quebec – With each step he took closer to the table where he’d be signing autographs, the chant grew louder.“GUY! GUY! GUY!”
Yes indeed, Hockey Hall-of-Famer Guy Lafleur was in Roberval – a small town that’s roughly six hours north of Montreal, where Lafleur shined from 1971-85. To this day, the 57-year-old remains the Canadiens’ all-time leading scorer.
Lafleur arrived in Hockeyville on Sunday afternoon, alongside former teammate Rejean Houle, just in time to participate at the Stanley Cup Jamboree, where hockey’s Holy Grail was on display for thousands of people who thought they’d never see it in front of their own eyes.
“Some of them are living in the past,” Lafleur joked when asked about the cheers he drew from the phenomenal crowd. “It’s always nice and it keeps you alive. For us to be able to do that and have the opportunity of doing that, I think it’s very special. People are remembering the years that you played, and they’re happy that you came and spent time with them, signing autographs and taking pictures. It’s fantastic.”

Vancouver vs. Edmonton - 09/23/2008
Cory Schneider made 33 saves in four periods of play and two more in the shootout to start the Canucks preseason with a win and earn his first of the year Monday night.

Jason Krog, a Canucks newcomer, steps up and scores the shootout winner against Oilers keeper Mathieu Garon in Edmonton.

In a rematch against Edmonton Tuesday night, the Canucks will dress a completely different lineup that doesn't include either Schneider or Krog.

The Canucks preseason home opener will feature a lineup with Canuck veterans, Roberto Luongo, Henrik Sedin, Sami Salo, and Kevin Bieksa.

Also on this squad are newcomers, Pavol Demitra, Darcy Hordichuk, Steve Bernier, and Ryan Johnson.

But the most anticipated debut for the Canucks is undoubtably 2008 first round draft pick, Cody Hodgson, who has been turning heads since entering camp September 12. Canuck fans have been waiting all summer for Hodgson to put on the Canucks sweater and step onto the ice at GM Place, hoping to make a mark on the team that will stick all year.

After a successful first year at the pro ranks, Michael Grabner (22-22-44 in 07-08 with the Moose) has taken strides to improve his game and rumblings about him making the roster isn't entirely out of reach. He shined in a rookie tournament in Camrose, Alberta last week and is hoping he can repeat his two-goal performance against a more veteran Oiler squad than he saw in Camrose.

Blues' Johnson out with torn knee ligaments
Associated Press
Sep 23, 2008, 9:50 PM EDT

JohnsonST. LOUIS (AP) -Blues defenseman Erik Johnson, the No. 1 pick in the 2006 draft, tore two ligaments in his right knee during a recent golf outing and is expected to miss the entire season but recover fully.
"In our business you get a few curveballs," team president John Davidson said Tuesday night before St. Louis played Dallas in a preseason game. "This is a pretty good curveball."
Johnson, 20, was injured during a team golf outing on Sept. 16' when his right foot got caught between the brake and gas pedal of his golf cart'. The Blues had to wait for swelling in the knee to go down before a diagnosis could be made.
Two surgeons determined that Johnson tore the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in the knee that will require an operation to fix.
Davidson said the swelling in Johnson's knee must subside before surgery will take place. Davidson said Johnson isn't expected to play this season, but would have a "100 percent" recovery.
