New faces abound in Vancouver

Sep 13, 2008, 11:13 PM EDT
After a disappointing 2007-08 campaign, the Vancouver Canucks focused their attention toward providing goalie Roberto Luongo with more offensive weapons for the 2008-09 season.

The Vancouver Canucks finished just 10 points behind the first-place Minnesota Wild in the Northwest Division.

Unfortunately for the Canucks, that was the size of the gap in the standings.

Despite having world-class netminder Roberto Luongo, the Canucks struggled to keep pace in their extremely tight division in 2007-08 and failed to reach the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the third time in four years.

Time to put game face on

The battlecry emanating from the Vancouver Canuck prospects camp Sunday sounded almost Olympian in nature: let the games begin.
After just two days of practice, the Canuck kids will be put to a test of a different sort tonight when they face their counterparts from the Calgary Flames in Camrose, Alta.
Coaches, management and players alike want to see how they measure up. Doing drills is one thing, doing it in a real game against a real opponent is another. The Canuck prospects will also face the Edmonton Oiler freshmen on Tuesday.

I'm very excited to see the start of this hockey season, hope our prospects do well
at camp.
Good luck to them.

The third day of Canucks prospects camp was an eventful one at UBC as all 23 players once again took part in on-ice and dry-land activities.

Sunday's hour and a half skate was more offensive minded than Saturday's practice with coaches Scott Arniel, Ryan Walter, Rick Bowness, Jay Wells and Ian Clark focusing on everything from even and odd man rushes, to shot accuracy and face-offs.

Vancouver head coach Alain Vigneault was once again in attendance and although this was his second opportunity to see the players on the ice, he still needs more time to get a close look at the group.

Following a brief skate Monday morning the Canucks prospects head to Camrose, Alberta for a pair of games against Edmonton's and Calgary's prospects; Vigneault is confident that much more will be learned during these games.

Gretzky won't manage 2010 Olympic team, but wants to be involved
Canadian Press
Sep 15, 2008, 6:07 PM EDT

CALGARY - Wayne Gretzky will not manage the Canadian men's hockey team again at the 2010 Olympics, but is expected to be involved with the team in some capacity.
Hockey Canada president Bob Nicholson confirmed Monday that Gretzky will not reprise the role of executive director he had with the gold-medal winning team of 2002 in Salt Lake City, or the 2006 team that finished out of the medals in Turin, Italy.
"We've chatted for a number of months on this and also in the last couple weeks," Nicholson said. "It's best for Wayne Gretzky not to be GM given his focus on his job as head coach of the Phoenix Coyotes."

RahimiAfter a night’s rest, the Canucks file to the rink for the morning skate in preparation for the Edmonton Oilers tonight at 6:00.

A 6-3 loss to start off the tournament is something the Canucks will hope to rebound from tonight when they take the ice and end on a positive note before flying home to Vancouver and get ready for main camp Saturday.

They won't be sorry with Robert Lang, he is a good player, maybe getting a little old for
hockey, but the same as Sundin.
I'm very tired of thinking about Sundin at all, if he can't make up his mind by now, he
should just quit, he is being ridiculous, and making lots of teams 'just' wait and wait,
very inconsiderate and unsportsmanlike.
If he does come to Vancouver, as far as I'm concerned, the excitement about him has gone. And, if he does come, he better play at the top of his game all year, or he will
be criticized heavily.

Canadian Press

Stajan SundinTORONTO - Almost nobody is giving the Toronto Maple Leafs a chance this season and that's just fine with the guys who play for the team.
They don't mind that interim GM Cliff Fletcher thinks rocky days lie ahead. They have no problem with being labelled a bunch of castaways and unproven talents. There's no issue with pundits predicting a last-place finish.
Yes, you can officially start calling this year's version of the Maple Leafs a willing underdog, but know that it comes with an important caveat - they'll only play the part to a point.
"Our whole dressing room believes we can do a lot better than people are giving us credit for," said forward Matt Stajan. "That's fine. We'll play that role.
"It's a little different than people having high expectations. We have nothing to lose, we're going to go out there and play as hard as we can and hopefully prove everybody wrong."
The Maple Leafs reported to training camp Friday morning and were put through a series of medical exams and fitness tests.

He can wear the C if he smiles!

Do you wonder where he is going to go, or do you think he will 'just' retire, maybe he
should draw straws, cause he's obviously losing his ability to make a decision, so maybe
he has other problems, more serious than deciding to play hockey or not.;-)

Bittp://canucks.nhl.com/team/app/?service=page&page=NHLPage&id=1819eksa The Vancouver Canucks kicked off the first day of Training Camp with the veteran players participating in a demanding circuit of fitness and medical tests.

This weekend 45 players will take to the ice at Meadow Park Sports Centre in Whistler, for official Training Camp before jumping into pre-season games starting on September 22nd in Edmonton. The players are looking forward to the new season and a fresh start.

“There are a lot new faces on the team, so the next 48 hours will be entirely dedicated to getting a good feel for my new teammates and making sure we develop a good chemistry,” said Roberto Luongo.

Head coach Alain Vigneault and the coaching staff will use the camp to give players an opportunity to assume new roles on the team and get them ready to play.

“Obviously there have been some changes to our group and we lost three key components to our dressing room, three guys that have had a definite influence; Trevor, Markus and Brendan,” Vigneault said. “But, I think that the fact that those three guys are gone is going to give an opportunity to some of our other players to impact the culture of our dressing room. Those guys were very good leaders, but I do think that we still have quite a few guys that can impact the culture, and can have a really positive effect on our group
