Hossa to make Red Wings debut tonight

Champs on ice -- For the first time since lifting the Stanley Cup, the Detroit Red Wings will play a game tonight. Montreal, fresh off a memorable exhibition game in Roberval, Quebec, makes its way to Motown for tonight's preseason matchup.

Most importantly, though, tonight marks the first time prized free-agent acquisition Marian Hossa will wear the famous winged wheel on his chest. Hossa, as any hockey fan who hasn't been living in a cave already knows, signed a one-year contract this summer to play for the Stanley Cup champs.

According to the Detroit Free Press, the Red Wings have broken up into two teams, Team Howe and Team Lindsay, to split their nine preseason games.

Tonight, Team Howe gets a turn, and the Press reports its breakdown looks like this:

Forwards: Hossa, Pavel Datsyuk, Tomas Holmstrom, Kirk Maltby, Ville Leino, Ryan Oulahen, Kris Draper, Aaron Downey, Evan McGrath, Francis Pare, Jan Mursak, Jamie Tardif, Tom Galvin and Tomas Kopecky.

MONTREAL - A special stamp and a loonie will be part of celebrations for the Montreal Canadiens 100th anniversary season.
The NHL club unveiled a long list of events to be held over the next two NHL seasons leading up to the 100th anniversary of the team's founding on Dec. 4, 2009.
They include 10 million loonies to be released by the Royal Canadian Mint and an anniversary stamp by Canada Post.
It begins with the team's home opener on Oct. 15, when a Ring of Honour will be inaugerated at the Bell Centre paying tribute to the 44 players and 10 builders the team has sent to the Hockey Hall of Fame. The team's new giant scoreboard - it's five times bigger than its predecessor - is already in place.

Thrashers nab Schneider in 3-for-1 trade
1 trade
Mike G. Morreale | NHL.com Staff Writer
Sep 26, 2008, 5:00 PM EDT

Mathieu Schneider was shipped to the Atlanta Thrashers for forwards Brad Larsen and Chad Painchaud and defenseman Ken Klee.
WATCH Schneider highlightsTwo days after signing prized second-year defenseman Tobias Enstrom to a four-year contract, Atlanta Thrashers General Manager Don Waddell reeled in two-time NHL All-Star defenseman Mathieu Schneider Friday afternoon in a trade with the Anaheim Ducks.

In exchange for the 19-season veteran, Waddell dealt forwards Brad Larsen and Chad Painchaud and defenseman Ken Klee.

Schneider, who won a Stanley Cup with the Montreal Canadiens in 1993, passed through waivers without being claimed last week. Since the Ducks are over the $56.7 million salary cap, trading the 39-year-old defenseman was the team’s most sensible resolution.

According to the L.A. Daily News, Schneider and Anaheim GM Brian Burke spoke on the phone hours before the Ducks’ preseason opener Wednesday, agreeing to extend the four-day window set last Friday to trade the veteran defenseman.

Hockey mourns Paul Newman

Hockey mourns Paul Newman
John McGourty | NHL.com Staff Writer
Sep 27, 2008, 5:27 PM EDT

The death of actor Paul Newman on Friday at age 83 is being mourned worldwide, but it hits hockey particularly hard because Newman was the star of the best hockey movie ever made, “Slap Shot,” released in 1977.
Newman gained stardom in the 1950s and never lost the movie-star aura, appearing in such classic films as "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof," "Exodus," "The Hustler," "Cool Hand Luke," "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," "The Sting" and "The Verdict."
He finally won an Oscar in 1986 -- on his eighth try -- for "The Color of Money," a sequel to "The Hustler." He later received two more Oscar nominations. Among his other awards was the Motion Picture Academy's Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. But Newman was renowned in hockey circles for his portrayal of Reg Dunlop.
Steve Carlson, who played Steve Hanson in the film, knew for a long time that Newman was ill.
"We had a tribute to Slap Shot in Boston last year with the Bruins Alumni," Carlson said. "We had 'Dr. Hook,' Paul D'Amato; 'Hanrahan,' Christopher Murney; goalie Denis Lemieux,' Yvon Barrette; and 'Johnny Upton,' Allan F. Nichols. We tried to get Paul Newman to come up, but he wasn't feeling well even then and had to decline. It was great to see the boys again. What a cast that movie had

Montreal hosts 2009 NHL All-Star Game

The second NHL All-Star Game was held in Montreal on Nov. 3, 1937. It was a benefit for the family of Habs legend Howie Morenz, who died of a game-related injury. The National Hockey League will take a five-day break, Jan. 21-27, 2009 for a very good reason – to help the Montreal Canadiens celebrate their 100th anniversary by hosting the Jan. 25 NHL All-Star Game.

The game will commemorate both the 100th anniversary of the Montreal franchise and the 100th anniversary of the first North American hockey all-star game, a charity benefit for the family of drowning victim Hod Stuart, who was honored in 1945 as one of the first members of the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Montreal has been the most frequent site for the NHL All-Star Game, hosting the event 13 times, but not since 1993. This could be a good omen for the reigning Eastern Conference champions. The Canadiens went on to win the 1993 Stanley Cup.

This will be the first NHL All-Star Game played in Canada since the Toronto Maple Leafs hosted in 2000. It will also be the first NHL All-Star Game held at the Bell Centre, the home of the Canadiens since March 16, 1996.

Penguins are in demand for special events
Shawn P. Roarke | NHL.com Managing Editor
Sep 29, 2008, 1:52 PM EDT

Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins are a marquee team that will put its skills on display during the NHL Premiere in Stockholm.
STOCKHOLM -- There's no question the Pittsburgh Penguins are one of the NHL's flagship franchises. Teams that sport top-end talent like the Penguins are marquee attraction in any sport.

"You just need to look at the core of this team -- six All-Star players," said Pascal Dupuis, a forward who joined the Penguins last season. "You play with these guys and all they want is winning. They work hard, they practice hard. These guys, eat, sleep and breathe hockey."

And, as a result, the Penguins are in great demand when the League wants to showcase its exciting product. That's to be expected when Sidney Crosby, the face of the Penguins, is the most-exciting and most in-demand player in the game today.

Last winter, the Penguins were chosen to play Buffalo in the Winter Classic on New Year's Day, a game that was filled with the type of pageantry and hoopla usually reserved for the postseason. Later, that season the Penguins fought their way to the Stanley Cup Final -- the game's biggest stage -- before falling to Detroit in six games.

Now, the Penguins are in Sweden as ambassadors of the game.

They are spending 10 days here as part of Bridgestone NHL Premiere 2008,

CrosbyThe dilemma is reminiscent of the good old days when you had to choose between Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux, knowing you can't really go wrong with either one but wanting to get the best possible bang for your buck.
That's the type of decision poolies lucky enough to be drafting first overall are facing this season with Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin. Both are generational talents coming into their own and are clear candidates for the No. 1 pick.
So what should you do?
Good question, making it one of the burning draft-day issues that we debate below.
Crosby or Ovechkin?

If it is a goals pool Ovechkin is the clear choice but on mere ponits it's a difficult choice. I still think I would go with Ovechkin, I'm not convinced Crosby isn't going to be injury prone while Ovechkin is a machine.

Avery had quite a long comment today concerning Don Cherry. Said he grew up with
coaches corner, always stood up for Cherry, but now he thinks that Cherry doesn't know
sh*t, and says a lot of stupid things, and doesn't have enough respect for european players, as they bring lots of skill to the NHL.
I'm not a huge Avery fan, but in this case I totally agree with him.
Heard the interview on team 1040.
Can't find anything about it on Nhl.com they probably don't want to give Avery
the time of day, and won't print it.

Iginla? Thornton? Kovalchuk? Who's the best?
Friday, 10.03.2008 / 9:00 AM / Columns
By John Kreiser - NHL.com Columnist

Who's the best offensive player of the 21st century? It depends on how you're answering the question.

When it comes to goals, Calgary's Jarome Iginla is the runaway winner. The Flames' captain enters the 2008-09 season with 283 goals since 2000-01, 24 more than Jaromir Jagr and 28 more than Marian Hossa. But Iginla's average of 40.4 goals in seven full seasons takes a back seat to Atlanta's Ilya Kovalchuk, who's fourth overall with 254 goals, but has averaged 42.3 in his six NHL seasons. And they're both well behind Alex Ovechkin's average of 54.3 in his three seasons since joining the Washington Capitals in 2005.

If points are the criterion, Joe Thornton of the San Jose Sharks is the leader with 648 (92.6 per season), seven more than Jagr. Ottawa's Daniel Alfredsson is a distant third at 578, followed by Colorado's Joe Sakic (569) and Iginla (566). Thornton has done the majority of his work as a setup man -- his total of 450 assists in the past seven seasons is 68 more than Jagr and 101 ahead of Sakic in the top three.

Stamkos was nearly the hero in his NHL debut
Saturday, 10.04.2008 / 5:37 PM / NHL Premiere

PRAGUE, Czech Republic — Steven Stamkos' initial NHL shot on goal came 4:56 into his first NHL game. Tampa Bay's prized rookie had his first NHL breakaway attempt 50 minutes into his first NHL game.

He's still waiting for his first NHL point, but the hockey world no longer has to wait for its latest sensation.

Stamkos made his highly anticipated debut Saturday in the Lightning's 2-1 loss to the New York Rangers at O2 Arena. He finished a minus-1 with two shots on goal and a 3-3 record on faceoffs in just 8:25 of ice time, but those stats hardly tell the story of how successful the No. 1 draft pick's debut was.

"Stamkos really showed some flashes of what he can do," Tampa Bay coach Barry Melrose said.
Stamkos' ice time was limited due to the seven penalties the Lightning took, giving the Rangers 13:27 in power-play time. Since he hasn't earned power-play time yet, he lost another 7:48 of ice time.

We've got a nice little pool going on with a lot of the Security Guards involved. It isn't a true Fantasy Draft Pool, rather there are groups of 29 Centres, 29 Right Wingers, 29 Left Wingers, 29 Defensemen, and 16 Goalies. You are also allowed one "mystery pick" which can be any player not on the list. You are allowed to pick 2 Centres, 2 Left Wingers, 2 Right Wingers, 4 Defensemen, and 2 Goalies.

These are the players I chose:

Centre: Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby
Left Wing: Alexander Ovechkin and Ilya Kovalchuk(I would have chosen Henrik Zetterberg, but he went to Centre when the Wings got Hossa)
Right Wing: Jarome Iginla and Martin St. Louis
Defense: Nicklas Lidstrom, Brian Campbell, Tomas Kaberle, and Dion Phaneuf
Goalie: Martin Brodeur and Roberto Luongo
Mystery Pick: Teemu Selanne

If you were in a similar draft, who would you have chosen instead of the players I chose? I was really torn about whether to pick Steve Stamkos for my Mystery Pick or not, but Selanne was on fire during the preseason!

I have joined the CBS, hockey night in canada fantasy pool, lots to pick from, thousands
and thousands of members, I usually end up around 15000th or so, sometimes better during the season. It's very hard to know who is going to rise to the top.
I would hesitate
to pick too much from Tampa Bay, as their defense is weak, as noted in todays game with
rangers, rangers had almost 40 shots on them, got in on their goalie way too much, poor defense.
We also have a cap limit, so have to watch how many 'so called' super stars, as they are worth more points, so have to balance it out.
It's just personal preference, I would not pick a toronto defenseman, or a calgary defenseman, both teams have 'not so good' overall defense, but that is my opinion, maybe
not yours.
Kovalchuk will do fine, even on a poor team, he has done so before, so I wouldn't worry
about him.
Andy McDonald (St. Louis), was the best pre season player, the one Burke traded away last year so he
could sign Neidermeyer again. A real bone headed trade in my opinion.
I like the Luongo pick, as Canucks are so strong defensively and have him as their goalie,
which should allow them to pull off some wins in close games.
Tampa Bay will win 'big' against poor defense, (like they have), as they are so strong on offense.

Good luck in your pool.

Some top picks in for trying first season
Tuesday, 08.12.2008 / 9:50 AM

It's the difference between playing against boys in junior hockey or in college and playing against men in the National Hockey League. It's a daunting task. It's a physical drain of growing into your body more quickly than ever before. It's wanting it more than anything else you've ever done.

And with the most recent draft being considered in quality and depth right up there with the 1979 and 2003 drafts, it shouldn't be surprising to hear Tampa Bay talking about where Steven Stamkos will fit in the Lightning lineup.
