Naslund key to Rangers' scoring
Sunday, 10.05.2008 / 9:00 AM / Season Preview
By John McGourty - NHL.com Staff Writer

Five years ago, Markus Naslund was the NHL’s best player according to his peers. Naslund was awarded the Lester B. Pearson Award, the NHL Players' Association tribute to the best player in the League during the regular season.
Naslund finished second in NHL scoring that season with 104 points, two points behind Peter Forsberg. He finished second the season before, putting up 90 points behind Jarome Iginla's 96 points. Naslund was the NHL's fourth-leading scorer in 2003-04 with 84 points.
His team, the Vancouver Canucks, were perennial Stanley Cup contenders, but they
trended downward the past three seasons, and Naslund's point totals also declined. During the past three seasons, he has averaged 27 goals and 64 points a season and is minus-23.
Naslund signed with the Raners this summer and faces a tall task in New York, trying to replace the scoring of departed veterans Jaromir Jagr, Martin Straka and Sean Avery. Second-year center Scott Gomez has been skating with Naslund in recent weeks and can't wait to see Naslund start producing in the regular season.
"He feels like he has a lot to prove. He had 90-100 points just a couple of years ago and it's still there," Gomez said. "He had a lot of pressure in Vancouver where they had a team with high expectations and they didn't get it done for whatever reasons."

Two games into the season, and Tampa Bay has only scored 2 goals and had less than 25 shots on net both games while giving up almost 40 each game. So much for their "vaunted offence". They got all this offence in the off-season, but they forgot that they still needed chemistry! Defense and goaltending would be required as well.

That being said, I still want Martin St. Louis to get tons of points.;-) He didn't get any today, dang it.:-(

They have been a team over the years, which has depended on strong offence, and not
much in the way of defence to win their games, when it works it looks great, but most
teams are responsible at both ends of the ice, and will defend against that style with
success more than failure, we'll see, maybe their defence will improve throughout the
year, depends how the coach 'coaches'.

Ducks name Scott Niedermayer captain
Tuesday, 10.07.2008 / 8:19 PM / News
"It’s an honor to be named team captain, but it was not something I was necessarily expecting. We have several great leaders in this locker room and I’m just happy to be part of that.”" -- Scott Niedermayer

Scott Niedermayer got his "C" back on Tuesday when the Anaheim Ducks announced that the four-time Stanley Cup champion will serve as captain for the 2008-09 season. Niedermayer, 35, was captain of the Ducks in 2005-06 and 2006-07, and received the Stanley Cup from NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman when the Ducks captured their first championship in June 2007.
The 6-1, 195-pound defenseman re-joined the Ducks on Dec. 16, 2007, after sitting out the first 34 games of the 2007-08 season while contemplating retirement. Niedermayer also served as team captain for the New Jersey Devils during the final half of the 2003-04 NHL season.

Bowman to be 'Hawk eyes, Chicago all ears
Wednesday, 10.08.2008 / 11:00 AM / NHL Insider
By John McGourty - NHL.com Staff Writer

William Scott "Scotty" Bowman has done everything in hockey, from playing professionally to scouting to coaching to being a general manager. In the process, he's won 11 Stanley Cups, nine as a coach, including five with the Montreal Canadiens, one with the Pittsburgh Penguins and three with the Detroit Red Wings. He also won the Stanley Cup in 1991 as the Penguins' director of player development and again in 2008 as special consultant to the general manager (Ken Holland) of the Detroit Red Wings.

A little more than a month after the Red Wings won their fourth Stanley Cup in Bowman's 13-year tenure, he accepted an offer to become the senior advisor of hockey operations for the Chicago Blackhawks.

Roster decisions that could affect your team's roster
Wednesday, 10.08.2008 / 12:15 PM / Fantasy Games
By Rocky Bonanno - NHL.com Staff Writer

NHL teams have until Wednesday at 3 pm ET to get their active roster down to the maximum 23 players. Check NHL.com throughout the day for the latest roster moves.

Ovechkin is OK -- Alexander Ovechkin owners, take a deep breath and relax. It's going to be OK.

Ovechkin, who either went first or second in your fantasy draft (if he went lower than second, I want to hear from you!), left practice early Tuesday with a mysterious "nagging injury" less than 15 minutes after he took the ice. He is expected, however, to play in the season-opener at Atlanta on Friday.

They beat Detroit last time they played them as well.....this means nothing.

The Habs will show them real hockey on sat.;-)

Besides the last thing the Leafs want to do is have a so-so season, you don't get Tvaros that way.

Dopey Leaf fans will be dreaming of the cup now.

I just liked the fact that they played a lot faster than they did last season, and did not have the third period meltdown that they seemed to enjoy doing so much last season. It may only be one game, but it WAS against the defending Stanley Cup champions. I will enjoy whatever victories they can get and not get ahead of myself.

Toronto loses in the shootout...again. I really don't like the shootout(and it's not because of the Leafs sucking so bad in them either).

Yeah, they're looking pretty bad allready, and in toronto they had the nerve
to say that the canucks would be bottom feeders this year, and on the flip side
of that the habs look very strong.
