Flames 5, Predators 3
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -It wasn't how the Calgary Flames wanted to win, but they'll take a big third-period comeback anytime they can get one.
Down by two goals after two periods Thursday night against the Nashville Predators, the Flames stormed back with four third-period goals to earn a 5-3 victory. As is usually the case, captain Jarome Iginla led the way and he did it with a hat trick.
"It's a good sign for us," said Miikka Kiprusoff, who made 35 saves. "You just have to keep believing there is still time. It was an unbelievable comeback and huge points for us."
The Predators struck twice against Kiprusoff in a span of 19 seconds in the second.
Greg Zanon gave Nashville a 1-0 lead when he fired a one-timed shot from high above the right circle that went into the top right corner of the net at 5:42.
At 6:01, Jordin Tootoo skated into the left circle and beat Kiprusoff to a similar spot to make it a two-goal edge for the Predators. Jason Arnott made it 3-0 at 8:10 when he scored from the slot on the power play.
Nashville's three goals

Strange game last night, looked like Calgary was 'toast', and all of a sudden they
came alive and nashville went to sleep, I think it was 5 straight goals in the second
and third periods, to give Calgary the win, and Iginla a hat trick.

By Adam Schwartz - NHL.com Staff Writer

New York Rangers center Nikolai Zherdev, who played 4 seasons with the Columbus Blue Jackets before being traded to the Rangers this summer, returns to Columbus on Friday, which highlights a 6-game schedule.

In addition to Zherdev's return, the Anaheim Ducks square off against the Ottawa Senators (7 p.m. ET, RIS) in a rematch of the 2007 Stanley Cup Final, the Philadelphia Flyers take a short trip up the New Jersey Turnpike to face the New Jersey Devils, the San Jose Sharks visit the Florida Panthers and the Detroit Red Wings host the Atlanta Thrashers. Also, the St. Louis Blues look to rebound after losing just their second game of the season when they take on the Los Angeles Kings, who will play just their second road game of the season.

Briere to miss 3-4 weeks with injury
Friday, 10.24.2008 / 7:25 PM / News

Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren gave the following update on Flyers center Danny Briere prior to tonight's Flyers-Devils game at the Prudential Center:

"Danny has a slight tear in his reptus abdominis, which is a stomach muscle," said Holmgren. "He will have surgery at Hahnemann Hospital tomorrow at 7:30 a.m. He will be out of the lineup approximately 3-4 weeks."

"I am surprised by the turn of events that happened today," said Briere. "I hate missing time, but by being aggressive, I will be back soon."
Briere currently leads the Flyers in scoring with three goals and four assists in six games.

Ottawa lost again. No goaltending and pourous defense will do that for you. Good. That means the Leafs won't be alone in the basement.;-)

Vancouver Canucks - Preview: Edmonton @ Vancouver - 10/25/2008

Oilers-Canucks Preview

Oct 25, 2008, 7:00 PM PT
TV Information National TV:
CBC (HD),NHLN-USThough they're only seven games into the season, the Vancouver Canucks are already facing some difficult challenges on the injury front.
The Canucks return home for the first time in over two weeks on Saturday, but won't have offseason acquisition Pavol Demitra in the lineup for their matchup against the Northwest Division rival Edmonton Oilers.
Vancouver (3-4-0) kicked off 2008-09 with a 6-0 home win over Calgary on Oct. 9 before embarking on a six-game road trip in which it went 2-4-0. The Canucks lost the final three contests of the trip, falling 4-2 to Columbus on Tuesday.
But they were hampered by a variety of ailments to several players during that swing with Demitra's injury being the most devastating.
The 33-year-old center underwent an MRI on Wednesday that revealed fractured rib cartilage, an injury he suffered in Sunday's 4-2 loss at Chicago and one that is expected to sideline him for three to four weeks.
The Canucks' highest-paid forward after signing a two-year, $8 million contract this summer, Demitra has two goals and an assist in six games.
Vancouver was also without forwards Darcy Hordichuk (knee) and Rick Rypien (viral illness) and defenseman Sami Salo (groin) on Tuesday.
Hordichuk practiced Thursday and could be in the lineup Saturday, while Rypien and Salo are day-to-day, according to the Canucks' official Web site.
"We're still in the process of evaluating our team," Canucks coach Alain Vigneault said. "With that being said, there are some areas that we are going to work on here in the next couple of days."
One aspect Vigneault's club will try to correct is its special teams play. The Canucks converted two of 24 power-play chances and allowed opponents to score nine times in 30 opportunities with the man advantage during the trip.
"We're really close in my mind to being again, one of the top penalty killing teams in the league," Vigneault told the Canucks' site. "That being said about the penalty killing I feel we've got the elements to have a good power play and for whatever reasons we got away from what we were doing at the beginning."
Vancouver seeks improvement versus an Edmonton team that is 1-for-13 on power-play opportunities over its last three games. The lone goal in that stretch came from Shawn Horcoff in the second period of a 4-1 loss at Colorado on Thursday night.
Horcoff's goal is all the offense the Oilers (4-2-0)

Sweet! The Leafs beat the Sens! They totally outplayed them last night, and it showed up on the score sheet. Ottawa is honestly in trouble right now, and I am not only saying this as a Leaf fan. They just do not seem to have the drive and/or heart right now.

Washington won again last night. I was worried when they coughed up the lead at the end of the third period, but Semin won it for me.

I am so glad I dumped Selanne and picked up Semin in my pool. He got me a goal and 2 assists last night!

Iginla is on fire!! He had 1 goal and 2 assists as well last night. Considering how he was invisible for the first few games of the season, this is a nice sight to see.

I see pretty good energy on the leafs team this year, younger, and more determined. I
certainly am not a leafs fan, but I like to see teams with good energy, putting out, and
trying hard, canucks are doing that too now, and I love it, win or lose.
There is such a big transition right now all through the NHL, and movement away from the
usual super stars, we are used to, and new ones on the horizon, that's good for the league, and good for the game.
The hockey is faster, with better skating than ever, and more talented players, no more goons, as all the energy players who do 'fight', still have to be 'players', who can contribute, and goalies are better too, lots of good goalies all over the league, hard to pick out
one or two who are the best now.

Haha, no, they hate us. We just laugh at them and shake our heads in wonderment at them. :p

Spoken like a true Leaf fan.

Perhaps Ottawa will get the high draft pick now and you'll get nothing and add it to the nothing you've already got.

Leaf fans....dumber than a bag of pucks.

While it sucks that Brodeur could not give me a point tonight by winning, I am glad that the Leafs were able to pull out the victory tonight(in the Shootout no less!) with a 48 shot attack. Two points from Kaberle(about time you got some more points!) was icing on the cake.

Lidstrom has an assist so far tonight, so that will be another point for me.

Senators lock up Alfredsson
CBC Sports

The Ottawa Senators have called a news conference for Thursday afternoon, when they will likely announce that captain Daniel Alfredsson has signed a contract extension.

According to an Ottawa Sun report, it's a four-year deal worth $22 million US.
Alfredsson's current deal is structured so that it would have expired at the end of the current NHL season if he played in 70 games or tallied 70 points.
Alfredsson, 35, has spent his entire career with the Senators, tallying 334 goals and 856 points in 861 regular-season games with Ottawa.
The Senators are in Florida to play the Panthers on Thursday evening.

Good for Ottawa, Alfredsson is one of the best all around players in the league and he will now finish his great career where it started.

Senators re-sign Alfredsson to four-year contract
Thursday, 10.30.2008 / 1:02 PM / News

Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk and general manager Bryan Murray announced today the club has re-signed team captain Daniel Alfredsson to a four-year agreement.

"Our ability to reach a new contract so early in the season speaks to the high level of commitment and respect that exists between Daniel and our hockey club. With today’s signing, I deliver on a promise to our fans and to Daniel that I would make him a Senator for life," said Melnyk. "Daniel’s leadership and on-ice skills make him one of the best all round players in the National Hockey League and I’m delighted that he will remain an integral part of the Senators organization."

"Daniel is the type of person and player that we want to continue building this franchise around," said Murray. "We are happy to have him here to lead our team towards the goal of bringing a Stanley Cup to Ottawa."

Koivu line going Wild
Thursday, 10.30.2008 / 9:00 AM / NHL Insider
By John McGourty - NHL.com Staff Writer

"Better living through chemistry."

Early in the 2008-09 season, the Minnesota Wild are benefiting from that phrase, once again leading the Northwest Division.

Developing team chemistry always has been a priority for Wild General Manager Doug Risebrough, and his summer additions have fit in perfectly.

Minnesota's two most important signings were left wing Andrew Brunette and right wing Antti Miettinen. They've been placed on a line with center Mikko Koivu, and voila! Instant chemistry.

Lots of games tonight, if you have nhl center ice, as I do, it's fun, as I jump from one game to
another, depends on how good games are, and intermissions etc.
Minnesota still doesn't have gaborik back, (not sure about tonight), but they have played well
without him, and his stock is going down, as teams will be hesitant to pick him up, and give a
big contract, as he hasn't played a complete season yet. But, he is a great player.

They are playing Montreal tonight.

Enjoy the games everyone.

LOS ANGELES (AP) -After a stumbling start, the Calgary Flames have figured things out and are now one of the NHL's hottest teams.
Daymond Langkow scored the go-ahead goal with 3:37 remaining, Miikka Kiprusoff made 34 saves, and the Flames beat the Los Angeles Kings 3-2 Saturday night for their sixth straight victory.
"We were definitely disappointed in how the season started," center Wayne Primeau said of the Flames, who opened 1-3-1. "We had a great preseason, and then we didn't get off on the right foot. But we've really paid attention to the details in practice with our forechecking and down-low coverage. I think the guys are starting to buy into it. And when you've get everybody on the same page, it's a lot easier out there."
Adrian Aucoin and Eric Nystrom also had goals, and Todd Bertuzzi earned two assists in the Flames' seventh victory in eight meetings with the Kings.
Los Angeles rookie Oscar Moller scored on a power play in the second period and tied it 2-2 with 5:55 left. Alexander Frolov and Kyle Quincey each had two assists.
Moller, a second-round pick in the 2007 draft, has four goals in 10 games. The Kings had nine games to decide whether to keep the 19-year-old center on their roster or send him back to his junior club.
"It's a little bit of relief, but I can't get too confident or too comfortable," Moller said. "I can't slack off or anything. I've got to make sure that I stick around here all year."
Moller beat Kiprusoff to the glove side from the low slot after Langkow blocked Quincey's slap shot from the left point with his skates. Langkow converted Bertuzzi's backhanded feed from behind the net less than 2 1/2 minutes later for his 19th goal in 40 games against the Kings.

Semin leads NHL 'Three Stars' of the month
Monday, 11.03.2008 / 2:35 PM / News
NHL.com
NEW YORK -- Washington Capitals left wing Alexander Semin, New York Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist and Nashville Predators defenseman Shea Weber have been named the NHL's 'Three Stars' for October.

SeminFIRST STAR -- ALEXANDER SEMIN, LW, WASHINGTON CAPITALS
Semin video

Semin led all NHL scorers with 16 points (eight goals, eight assists) and posted a +7 rating in nine games as the Capitals went 5-3-1 in October. He recorded points in eight of nine games and goals in six contests. Semin recorded six multiple-point games -- one shy of his total for all of 2007-08 -- and matched the most points by a Capitals player through nine games (Dale Hunter had 1-15--16 in 1991-92).

Semin began the season with multiple points in four of his first five games, including three points (one goal, two assists) on opening night in a 7-4 loss at Atlanta Oct. 10. He tallied a pair of goals in a 5-1 victory over Vancouver Oct. 13, notched 1-1--2 in a 4-3 win at Pittsburgh Oct. 16 and had two goals in a 4-3 shootout loss to New Jersey Oct. 18.
LundqvistSECOND STAR -- HENRIK LUNDQVIST, G, NEW YORK RANGERS
Lundqvist video

Lundqvist led all NHL goaltenders in victories and backstopped the Rangers to the top of the Eastern Conference by posting an 8-2-1 record with a 1.99 goals-against average and .928 save percentage. Lundqvist started 11 of the Rangers' 13 games in October and allowed two goals or fewer nine times, including a pair of 2-1 victories over the Tampa Bay Lightning at the NHL Premiere series in Prague, Czech Republic Oct. 4-5. He made 30 saves in a 4-2 victory over Chicago in the Rangers' North American opener Oct. 10, posted a season-high 40 saves in a 5-4 loss at Detroit Oct. 18 and stopped 27 shots and all three shootout attempts in a 3-2 victory over Pittsburgh Oct. 25.

WeberTHIRD STAR -- SHEA WEBER, D, NASHVILLE PREDATORS
Weber video

Weber led all NHL defensemen in scoring with 11 points (four goals, seven assists) and posted a +5 rating in 10 games, helping the Predators to a 5-4-1 record. He set career individual game highs with three assists, four points and a +5 rating in a 6-3 victory over Columbus Oct. 18 and tallied the game-winning goal, an assist and a +2 rating in a 3-1 victory over Edmonton Oct. 30. Weber also has earned a dramatic increase in ice time, going from a career-high 19:30 per-game average last season to 24:24 in 2008-09, including a season-high 28:46 in a 3-1 victory over Dallas Oct. 11.
