Weird Gabriola Island rock formations

It is limestone. Before there was the back island arc of van island it was warm shallow sea just before the Jurassic Sevier Orogenesis 140Ma - 50Ma of western rockies and such westward to the cascades during the Laramide orogeny period 40Ma - 70Ma.

Great Photo! The piece of crust that included Vancouver Island is known as Wrangellia. Through plate tectonics , Volcanism, glaciation it is one old Rock Vancouver Island. Chris Yorath's Geology of Southern Vancouver Island is a good little field guide a lot of photos . There are also Volcanoes that can be identified on the island trek as well. Local towns people that are in the smaller community's are the best coffee shop talk I have found for information gathering on trails

Dunno. I can tell you that eventually Cali will be right beside Alaska and VanIsle might be over beside China in a few million years.
