Keep in mind that stress is just as damaging to blood pressure, health, etc., as excess weight is. The fact that he's laughing and apparently comfortable with himself, means at that weight he may be just as healthy as his trim counterpart who busts his hump and stresses everyday about having a six pack instead of a keg.

That picture doesn't really tell the full story, despite what modern medicine has tried to beat into people's heads about weight.

The OP had it right with a lot of adjustments. Taking soda, including diet soda out of your diet can help a lot. Another adjustment is white bread and pasta. Changing up to wheat pasta and taking white bread out of your diet goes a long way.

Adding protein is not a bad thing providing the protein isn't all red meat. Fish and chicken and portion adjustment works out well. One of the posters here discussed the Atkins Diet and although it works in the short term...somehow "all the bacon you can eat" doesn't seem right.

Read labels because you will see that where they cut "fat" they add salt for flavour.
They also use water. Salad dressing for instance. They add 20% water and say it's 20% less calories. Same goes for other products. There is a lot to learn before taking the leap into excercise and reduced caloric intake.

Well I hope that red face is from a day in the sun and not from that vodka special in his hand and you're right if you aren't happy then you aren't healthy.

I seem to have missed a lot of posts.

Well now that you got rid of your treadmill you can get an eliptical with arm bars!Treadmills are great but the elipticals add the extra resistance and additional range of motion that does more than a treadmill can do!

hard to argue experts who say that obesity is dangerous.

Ah, but if you pay attention, they say obesity is a risk factor. It increases risks of a variety of things... it doesn't guarantee them. So to look at someone who's obese and make assumptions, is flawed. It's also not the ONLY thing that can increase your risk for the issues it's linked with. Health needs to be taken as a holistic approach, it can't be looked at from merely one facet of a person.

Years ago I read that people sometimes get salads because they feel they are eating right...then add a ladel full of ranch dressing (for example). That makes it just as bad as a Quarter Pounder meal.

Balsamic dressing seems to be the main dressing in healthy eating.

My fave for salad when out in a restaurant is just a squirt of lemon with some salt and pepper. BUT... if you're not eating anything but a salad, you need to add some fat (olive oil, avocadoes, nuts, etc), to be able to properly absorb the vitamins in the veggies.

No question. You have to eat. Starving yourself is not an option.

I mix a little balsamic vinegar into grape-seed oil, makes a very tasty dressing for salad.

I do make sure I have a little essential fats each day, it is necessary.

When I buy yogurt I buy whole yogurt, not fat free like I used to, it tastes better, and gives
some essential fats the body needs.

But I use only skim milk, except for my 'one' cup of coffee each day, (cream). I love to drink
milk, skim milk tastes just as good as whole milk, one just had to get use to the lack of thickness
when tasting, but that doesn't take long, and now I don't like whole milk, too thick, skim milk gives
a better thirst quenching feel in the mouth.

It is more important to reduce 'portions', when serving, than spend time worrying about everything
being fat free, but also cancel out very 'bad' foods, high on salt, and snacky stuff.
We love sweets, but have goodies like we take a vitamin, one a day, small portion.

I love chocolate, and keep dark chocolate in the house all the time, 'two small squares' a day, no more.

That's an excellent point. Some minerals and vitamins can't pass through the system without a carrier. Calcium is a good example of that.

Gluten makes sense if you have Celiac disease, but why would a healtyh person need to avoid it?
That is a good description of the type of diet I'm on and it works and is very easy to stick to, although I don't understand the gluten part, but I don't eat a lot of bread unless it's the good stuff. I don't eat meat that often either, but I never really have anyway.

Stress is actually a life saving mechanism and apparently is not as harmful as a lot of people think. Back in my early days, many were the times when "my bacon was saved" from sabre tooth tigers and man eating cannibals thanks to a little stress.:lol::lol:

uh-huh... I think everyone is aware of that, and equally aware that I was talking chronic stress.

I forgot! Had one of those for a little while. My son bought it for his ex. (before she was X). He thought it would be good for both of them but she was all pouty. It wound up at my house but aside from not having much room for it there, grandkids were playing on it and fighting over who was next so I put it out in the garage. X came along and took it one day and gave it to a friend. I only got to try it a couple of times. I'll have to look on some of the sales sites and see what's out there.

I could handle some nuts but the rest! Uh uh. I gag at the mere thought of oil on salad. I don't like avocado either. That's why my lunch everyday is salad with cottage cheese. Had a very bad day today though. We were out near lunch time so hubby wanted to go to Pizza Hut. "Slaps hand but it finds it's way to the pizza plate anyway". Son promised the kids we would have taco's for dinner so - we did. I'll count today as a write off and climb back on tomorrow! My youngest son reports today that he has now lost 45 pounds over the past 11 weeks. He looks great.
