"I think he did well. If it was the other two Gop fatheads there would be three more wars to contend with. Probably two of them would be in the US."

Hypotheses will earn you no points, Unforgiven.

Facts do! Obama, at least in the short term wasted all his time. He can't even get all the Democrats on his side.

Yeah but he has to please more than just the Democrats. I suppose he could get the CIA to make up some stuff to scare the House into agreeing with him for a little while. There is precedent in America for that sort of thing now.

Taxpayers (me) now own large corporations (ex. auto).
Taxpayers (me) now own banks.
Taxpayers (me) bailing out home owners.
Taxpayers (me) paying off loans for people who over extended themselves.
Taxpayers (me) paying health insurance for people who chose for what ever reason not to have it.

No great political philosophy on my part, I am a capitalist. You want something earn it.

"Democratic socialists believe that both the economy and society should be run democratically-to meet public needs, not to make profits for a few. To achieve a more just society, many structures of our government and economy must be radically transformed through greater economic and social democracy so that ordinary Americans can participate in the many decisions that affect our lives."
Sounds a lot like Obama.

Those gears were already in motion under your previous president, Obama has merely continued them.

What do you call bailing out all the banks under George W? Compassionate-corporate socialism?

So giving handouts to corporations is alright with you but providing "people" with affordable medical care and mortgage relief is somehow inherently evil?

Yes. Now repeat this ten times and call him in the morning. If you're still not convinced I hear they have drugs that can help convince you, prescribed by 9 out of 10 HMO's. It'll only cost you your soul.

What I meant to say in my original posting was that Obama had enough power, popularity and influence by last September, to convince anyone except his most ardent opponents to do as he would.

In that he is, obviously a failure.

Even last night's rousing speech will not get him the votes he needs.

As long as the trial lawyers are running the show with mindless lawsuits, (and become multi-millionaires in the process, like the dirtbag John Edwards) nothing will change.

Again you continue with the same nonsense, Yukon Jack. Last September Obama was trailing McCain in the polls (in the aftermath of the selection of Joan of Arc); his popularity was around 45%.

If you claim he was hugely popular last September (what are you claiming anyway, was Obama’s popularity around 60%, last September, 70%, what?), please put up some links to support your claim. Put up some opinion polls from that time.

Maybe you are having a ‘senior moment’, but last September Obama was less popular that he is today.

Yukon Jack, I am assuming that Democrats will pass some kind of reform, with or without Republican support. I am assuming that Democrats aren’t that stupid, not passing anything is the surest way to lose control of Senate and House next year.

Obama can survive not passing health care reform (Clinton did), if economy is doing great in 2012 Obama will be OK, but many Democratic politicians stand to lose their seats if they don’t pass anything. Congressional Democrats need the reform more than Obama does. So I ma assuming something will be passed.

The lawyers will never concede power. Those mindless lawsuits are their bread and butter.

There is the problem, the economy is not doing great. Yes, the stock markets seem to be coming back, but the unemployment situation is getting way out of hand. None of the stimulus money dedicated to creating jobs, never mind new jobs (with the exception of goverment jobs) has appeared yet. Someone is getting rich with it. Why are companies that supposedly received these monies still planning massive layoffs. The amount of jobs saved is pitiful compared to those lost.

Ironsides, unemployment takes time to recover; it is usually the last indicator to recover. Assuming the recovery continues, the unemployment would be expected to start dropping 6 or 9 months from now. Already, the rate of job losses has slowed down dramatically.

These things take time. The unfortunate part for the Republicans may be that the employment situation may start improving just in time for the next election.

This 14.9 million who are unemployed do not take into account those who have used up their unemployment insurance and are still unemployed. That is the fault with U.S. unemployment figures. If you are going to spend millions/trillions of dollars to create new job, there should be an almost instant increase in jobs. Another question: Where are these jobs going to be. We do not even see a improvement in highway repairs yet.

"In August, the number of unemployed persons increased by 466,000 to 14.9
million, and the unemployment rate rose by 0.3 percentage point to 9.7
percent. The rate had been little changed in June and July, after in-
creasing 0.4 or 0.5 percentage point in each month from December 2008
through May. Since the recession began in December 2007, the number of
unemployed persons has risen by 7.4 million, and the unemployment rate
has grown by 4.8 percentage points. (See table A-1.)
